Tips for Cooking with Strawberries
Choose red and firm strawberries for the best flavor. Strawberries with green parts are underripe and less sweet, and red strawberries that are soft are overripe and contain more water.
Ripen green strawberries quickly at home. Take them out of their original container and lay them on a baking sheet so that they are not touching. Keep them at room temperature and they will ripen in a day or two. Keep your eye on them as they can over ripen quickly too.
Eat your strawberries at room temperature. Store them in the fridge to keep them fresh, but take them out about an hour before you want to use them for the best flavor.
Reserve fresh strawberries for garnish. In recipes like salads, smoothies, and breakfasts, garnish your finished dish with fresh strawberries to highlight their sweet and fresh flavor.
Frequently Asked Questions
When are strawberries in season?
In the Northern Hemisphere, the peak season for strawberries is during June and July, though they are widely available from April through to October.
Can you use frozen instead of fresh?
When strawberries are out of season, frozen is often a great way to enjoy them as they are frozen at the peak of ripeness. Frozen strawberries are great in smoothies, purees, and jams as they have a strong and intense flavor.
How can I make my strawberries last longer?
To keep the strawberries fresh longer, soak them for a few minutes in a bowl with ½ cup white vinegar and 2 ½ cups of water. Pat them dry and then store in the fridge in a paper-towel lined ventilated container. Make sure you remove any spoiled berries to avoid contamination. This will help them last several days longer.
