47 Fourth of July Recipes That Cover More Than Just the Grill

47 Fourth of July recipes for a crowd, from appetizers and burgers to grilled mains, pasta salad, fruit desserts, and drinks for the cookout.

When I start planning our Fourth of July menu, the one thing I know for sure is that my husband and I will be grilling. That part is never up for debate. Everything else gets planned around the grill, with most of the sides, appetizers, and desserts made the day before, so neither of us is stuck inside once the cooking starts. Some years, it is just us on the patio with the kids. Other years, it turns into a full backyard cookout, which is exactly why I like having all my Fourth of July recipes ready to go.

When the guest list grows past just us, the grilling does not change, but everything else has to stretch. That part takes more planning. I keep a running list of Fourth of July recipes for a crowd for exactly that reason, with amounts that already work for a bigger group and timing that does not leave me scrambling, so I am not redoing the math every single summer.

How to Plan a Menu for the Fourth of July

  • Start with what is going on the grill. That decision is already made before anything else gets planned in our house. Everything else gets built around it. Once the protein is locked in, whether that is burgers, chicken, or both, the rest of the sides and apps come together a lot faster.
  • Figure out the headcount before anything else. Whether it is just us on the patio or a full backyard cookout, the number of people changes how much of everything gets made. That part comes before the grocery list. I would rather scale a recipe up once than run out of food halfway through the day.
  • Make whatever can be made the day before. Sides, salads, and desserts get made a day ahead in our house, so neither of us is stuck inside once the grill starts going. That timing makes the actual day a lot easier. The only thing happening on the 4th itself is whatever is coming off the grill.
  • Keep the rest of the table fresh and light. Since the grill already brings the heat, everything else stays simple and cool. Nothing needs the oven running on top of it. Fresh salads, fruit, and cold drinks round out the table without adding more cooking to an already hot day.

47 Fourth of July Recipes For a Big Cookout

This list pulls together 47 Fourth of July recipes, organized by what actually ends up on our table. There are appetizers and dips for the stretch before anyone is hungry enough for a full plate, burger recipes that cover both traditional patties and vegetarian versions, and grilled veggie sides next to the mains people build their plates around first. After that comes pasta salad and fresh salad, fruit desserts, and drinks made to cool everyone off.

Tips for Making Fourth of July Recipes

  1. Do not put everything on the grill at once. Burgers, chicken, and veggies all cook at different rates, and crowding the grill just slows everything down. I grill in batches and keep the finished food warm in a low oven or wrapped in foil. It takes a little longer, but nothing comes off dry or undercooked.
  2. Keep mayo-based salads on ice, not just in the shade. Potato salad and pasta salad with mayo do not hold up well in direct heat, even for an hour. I set the serving bowl inside a bigger bowl of ice and swap the ice out partway through the day. It sounds like overkill until the one time you skip it.
  3. Make the sides and desserts a day ahead. Anything that does not need to come straight off the grill should be done before the day even starts. Pasta salad, dips, and most desserts hold up fine in the fridge overnight. That is the only reason the actual day does not feel like nonstop cooking.
  4. Have a backup plan for ice. Coolers run out faster than anyone expects once the sun is actually out. I keep an extra bag in the freezer and refill drinks in batches instead of dumping everything in at once. Running out by 2 PM is its own kind of disaster.

How To Store Leftovers

  • Cool it down. Make sure to cool any hot recipes to room temperature before storing.
  • Label everything with the name and date. Keep track of all your leftovers so you know how long you have to enjoy them or toss them if needed.
  • Use plastic containers or freezer bags. Keep your food fresh by storing food in airtight containers.
  • Save or trash? If you have any perishable items (like meat or dairy), make sure to store them in the fridge. If they have sat out longer than 4 hours, it’s probably best to throw it out.
