Why you’ll love this grilled chicken burger recipe

  • Something different. If you’re tired of the same old beef burgers, this grilled chicken burger offers a change in pace and flavor. The inclusion of Greek yogurt, along with the variety of seasonings, gives this ground chicken patty a unique, irresistible flavor profile that’s unlike any you’ve had before.
  • Adaptable to many cooking methods. Whether you’ve got an outdoor barbecue or an indoor grill pan, this recipe is versatile enough to suit your needs. You can even make them in the oven if you’d like.
  • Healthy Alternative to ground beef. Opting for ground chicken instead of beef helps lower the saturated fat content, making this burger a leaner choice that doesn’t skimp on taste.
  • Sauce that steals the show. The accompanying sauce, made with yogurt, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, and mustard, is an explosion of tangy, sweet, and creamy flavors that perfectly complements the chicken burgers, making them even more delicious.

Ingredients You Need to Make Juicy Chicken Burger Patties

  • Chicken Breast: Choosing a lean protein like chicken breast keeps the burgers lighter while still providing a robust flavor. Cubing the chicken allows for easy blending with the other ingredients.
  • Italian Breadcrumbs: These help bind the chicken mixture together, while also adding a hint of classic Italian herbs that boosts the overall flavor of the burger.
  • Greek Yogurt: This unique addition provides moisture to the burger patties, ensuring they stay juicy and tender while grilling. It also introduces a tangy note that complements the flavors of the other ingredients. I use Stonyfield Whole Milk Organic Greek yogurt for this recipe.
  • Yellow Mustard: A traditional burger condiment, yellow mustard brings a tangy, slightly spicy kick that pairs perfectly with chicken.
  • Red Onion: Chopped red onion adds a bit of crunch and a touch of sweetness, bringing complexity to the burgers’ texture and flavor profile.
  • Seasonings (Paprika, Garlic Powder, Salt, Black Pepper): Each seasoning enhances the taste of the chicken – paprika adds a smoky hint, garlic powder brings in a savory note, salt enhances all the flavors, and black pepper gives a slightly spicy kick.
  • Avocado Oil: This oil has a high smoke point, making it ideal for grilling. It’s also neutral in flavor, so it won’t interfere with the delicious taste of your chicken burgers.

Greek Yogurt Burger Sauce

  • Yogurt: The base of the sauce, yogurt, lends a creamy texture and a tangy note that ties all the flavors together. The yogurt acts in place of a heavier mayo. I also recommend using full-fat Greek yogurt here.
  • Ketchup: Adds sweetness and a familiar tang that complements the other sauce ingredients.
  • Sweet Pickle Relish: This introduces a touch of sweetness and a slight crunch, adding complexity to the sauce’s texture and flavor.
  • Mustard: Its tangy, spicy flavor adds depth and heat to the sauce, balancing out the sweetness of the ketchup and relish.
  • Ground Black Pepper: A dash of this enhances the other flavors in the sauce and provides a subtle heat.

FOR SERVING:

  • Burger Buns: Choose your favorite type, whether that’s a classic sesame seed bun, whole grain, or even a lettuce wrap for a low-carb option.
  • Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onions: Fresh, crisp lettuce, juicy tomato slices, and sharp red onions add a crunch, freshness, and bite that contrasts nicely with the tender chicken burger.
Ingredients for recipe: Stonyfield Organic Greek Yogurt, spices, onion, mustard, breadcrumbs, oil, and for assembly, tomato, lettuce, and burger buns.

Tips for making the best Grilled Chicken Burgers

  1. Don’t overmix the patties. Overmixing your ground chicken mixture can lead to tough, chewy burgers. Mix just until the ingredients are combine and then form into patties for tender, juicy results.
  2. Mind the grill temperature. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Too hot, and the burgers might burn on the outside before they’re cooked on the inside; too cool, and they might dry out before developing a nice crust.
  3. Indent the patties. Before grilling, make a small indentation in the center of each chicne patty with your thumb. This helps the burgers cook evenly and prevents them from puffing up in the middle.
  4. Check for doneness. Use a meat thermometer to check your patties and make sure they are done. The internal temperature should reach 165˚F, indicating that the chicken is fully cooked and safe to eat.
  5. Rest your chicken burgers. After grilling, let the patties rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the patty, resulting in a juicier burger.

  • Switch out chicken for turkey: If you don’t have chicken on hand you can substitute it with an equal amount of turkey breast.
  • Switch out the breadcrumbs: If you need a gluten-free option, almond meal or gluten-free breadcrumbs can be used in place of the Italian breadcrumbs.
  • Go bunless: For a low-carb or gluten-free option, you can use lettuce wraps instead of traditional burger buns.
  • Make the seasoning your own: You can personalize your chicken burgers by adding other spices to the mix. Some cayenne pepper for heat, a sprinkle of cumin for earthiness, or a touch of dried herbs could make it your own.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make these burgers with ground chicken?

Yes, you can certainly substitute the chicken breast with ground chicken. The taste and texture will be slightly different, but the burgers will still be delicious. If you do go with ground chicken you’ll still use 1 pound for this recipe.

Can I cook these burgers on a stovetop or in an oven?

Yes, if you don’t have access to a grill, you can cook the burgers in a skillet on the stovetop over medium heat, or bake them in the oven at 375°F until the internal temperature reaches 165˚F, about 20-25 minutes.

Can I use regular yogurt insead of Greek yogurt?

Yes, you can use regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt. However, keep in mind that Greek yogurt is thicker and creamier than regular yogurt. Regular yogurt has a higher water content, so it might make your burger mixture a bit looser. If you decide to use regular yogurt, consider straining it first to remove some of the whey, or use a bit less than the recipe calls for to keep the right consistency.
