Why You Should Make More Smoothies
- Increase Nutrients in Day – Smoothies are my secret to packing in a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants from fruits and veggies. Trust me, kids won’t notice the little amount of beets in your fruit smoothie recipes.
- Quick and Easy – Is there anything easier than throwing all the ingredients into a blender and whizzing it up? Just blend and go!
- Refreshing Hydration – Smoothies, especially those with high-water ingredients like watermelon and cucumber, can help keep you hydrated throughout the day. I love cooling down to one of my refreshing strawberry smoothie recipes, especially when I don’t really have much of an appetite in the hot summer months.
- Customizable for Any Time of Day – Looking for satisfying breakfast smoothie recipes? I got you. Or do you need something light for a refreshing treat by the pool? I have lots of those too. Smoothies are incredibly versatile and great for any time of day.
Tips for Making Smoothie Recipes
- Watch the order. To get a creamy smoothie add in liquids first, then soft fruits or vegetables, greens, and ice or frozen fruit on top. This helps the blender process everything smoothly.
- No high-speed blender? I love my Vitamix, but these smoothie recipes will work with a regular blender, too. I recommend blending in stages, though. Start on low speed to break down the ingredients, then add harder and denser ingredients like frozen fruit and increase to high speed for a smooth texture.
- Easily adjust consistency. To make your smoothie thinner, add small amounts of water, milk, or juice and blend. To make your smoothie thicker, use or add frozen fruit (especially bananas), add more ice, or add frozen yogurt.
- Sweeten naturally. I like to use natural sweeteners as much as I can (save the processed sugars for desserts). Honey, maple syrup, date syrup, or ripe bananas are incredibly sweet and do an excellent job in smoothies. You can also use cut watermelon instead of plain water.
- Smoothie too sweet? If your smoothie is too sweet for your liking, add a touch of lemon juice or a little bit of yogurt or milk to dilute the sweetness.
- Clean the blender immediately. There’s nothing worse than dried-up gunk on the sharp blades of a blender. Rinse the blender right after making your smoothie to prevent residue from sticking. At the very least, fill it with water immediately and let it soak until you can get to it.
Smoothie Basics
- Freezer Smoothie Packs – Set yourself up for success and make freezer-friendly smoothie packs to quickly blend on busy weekdays. Even kids can join in on the smoothie fun – they can throw the freezer smoothie packs into a blender and have an instant breakfast or snack ready to go.
- How to Pit Cherries – No cherry pitter needed to make easy smoothie recipes with those farmstand cherries. Use your basic home kitchen tools to quickly pit cherries for snacking or adding them to your favorite fruit smoothie recipes.
- How to Cut Fruit – Though it may seem obvious, cutting fruit the proper way can make a big difference in how much juice and nutrients you get from the fruit. Learn how to cut a pineapple, pomegranate, papaya, mango, or kiwi to get maximum benefit.
- How to Freeze Bananas – If you’re looking for a way to preserve a bunch of bananas, you will appreciate this simple guide. Banana smoothie recipes are the best because they are naturally sweet and lend to a very creamy, thick texture. Win-win!
- How to Freeze Blueberries – Freeze these berries at the peak of their season to enjoy all year long. If you love smoothie recipes with frozen fruit and berries, it’s a good idea to stock up when they are fresh and accessible.
- How to Freeze Strawberries – Preserve that lush, flavorful red beauty from farmstands to enjoy year round. You’ll save money in the process and always be ready for strawberry smoothie recipes.
- Protein Powder Guide – Confused about the different types of protein powders out there? If you love protein smoothie recipes, you’ll want to read up on this guide. I cover everything from animal-based protein like whey protein to vegan protein powders, including soy, hemp, and pea protein.
- How to Freeze Avocados – Like bananas, avocados add incredible richness and make any smoothie oh-so-creamy! I like adding frozen avocados to fruit smoothie recipes with tropical fruits that add lots of natural sweetness.
- How to Make Yogurt – If you love smoothie recipes with yogurt as much as I do, you have to give this homemade yogurt recipe a try. It will save you a bunch of money (who doesn’t appreciate money savings?) and you can control the tanginess. Plus, you can try my Instant Pot Yogurt if you prefer a more hands-off approach.
- How to Make Almond Butter – If you really want to take your healthy smoothie recipes to another level, whip up homemade almond butter. It’s an easy and very cost-effective way to enjoy this satisfying smoothie staple.

Frequently Asked Questions
The best liquid depends on your taste and nutritional needs. Water is always a good option while milk, dairy, coconut, or almond milk, adds creaminess and protein. Coconut water is hydrating with natural sweetness and juice adds flavor but can also increase sugar content. Lastly, I’ll sometimes add kefir or yogurt for extra moisture and added probiotics. As you can see, you have plenty of options to choose from and it really is a matter of preference, recipe, and nutritional goals.
The best way to thicken a smoothie without watering it down is to use frozen fruits like bananas, strawberries, and mangoes. Another way I like to thicken a smoothie is to add naturally rich and creamy ingredients like avocados or Greek yogurt. A little goes a long way so start low and add more as needed. You can also try adding nut butter, like peanut butter or almond butter, to add richness and satisfying flavor.
No, you don’t need ice. You can use frozen fruit instead of ice (or fruit ice cubes for a fun twist). Making smoothie recipes with frozen fruit chills and thickens the smoothie without diluting the flavor.
