I shouldn’t be too surprised that an air fryer is great for cooking grilled cheese. Because it gets hot quickly and has a perforated basket, air is allowed to circulate all around the sandwich. That means the air fryer can cook a grilled cheese fast, and it gets browned all over, the cheese perfectly melty.

Cuisine Inspiration: American
Primary Cooking Method: Air fryer
Dietary Info: Vegetarian
Key Flavor: Cheese
Skill Level: Easy
Why This Is So Good
- Easy: By cooking the grilled cheese in the air fryer instead of on the stovetop, you don’t have to watch the sandwich as closely to prevent it from burning!
- Customizable: You can use pretty much any type of bread and cheese you like.
- Crowd-pleasing and kid-friendly: I really don’t know a single person who doesn’t love grilled cheese. Melted cheese? Crispy bread? What’s not to like?
Ingredients to Make Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
- Bread: Sourdough, whole-wheat, white, seeded: Any type of bread works!
- Cheese: You can use sliced cheddar, mozzarella, pepper jack, muenster, or Swiss cheese.
- Butter: This adds flavor and helps the bread brown!
Popular Substitutions & Additions
- Use mayonnaise instead of butter. You can spread a thin layer of mayo onto the outside of the bread instead of using butter. The oil in the mayo will help it brown!
- Add a spread. Try adding a thin layer of pesto or spicy mayo.
- Add veggies or fruit. Roasted red peppers, sliced avocado, apple slices, or a layer of strawberry chia jam would be delicious!
- Make it protein-packed. You could layer shredded chicken or leftover rotisserie chicken on top of the cheese.
How to Make Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
With the air fryer, you’re pretty much guaranteed a golden brown grilled cheese every time.
Tips for Making the Best Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
- Slice the bread evenly. If you’re not using a pre-sliced loaf and slicing the bread yourself, make sure to cut it evenly.
- Watch the cooking time. Every air fryer model is different (some run hotter and cook faster, and others cooler and slower), so you might need to adjust the cooking time. Use my recipe as a starting place!
- Flip with care. Use a spatula to flip the sandwiches gently, ensuring they stay intact! You may need to adjust the bread slightly if it shifts during flipping.
- Let the sandwiches rest. Give the sandwiches a minute to cool down before cutting them in half to let the cheese set a little.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you need to store the air fryer grilled cheese, keep it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge for 2 to 3 days. You can reheat it in an air fryer at 350°F for a few minutes until warmed through.
The best bread is whatever your favorite is. Each type of bread has its own unique taste and texture, and I recommend experimenting to see which one you love the most!
If the cheese isn’t melted, just pop it back in the air fryer for another minute or two.
This Air Fryer Grilled Cheese has given me another reason to love the appliance (not that I needed another one…). Cooking perfectly melty grilled cheese without standing over the stovetop is the best!

This recipe was so delicious and so easy!!! Thank you for sharing it Yumna! ❤️
Aww, you’re welcome!! So glad you liked it!
I made the grilled cheese sandwich this afternoon in my new air fryer. I only had shredded old cheddar cheese but I tried it anyway and added a piece of Canadian bacon with it. It was the best grilled sandwich I have ever had. I will be trying it again and experimenting with the cheeses I use. Thanks for the recipe idea.
Wow, thank you!! I’m so happy to hear you loved the recipe, Mary!
