Make the Viral “Onion Rings”

A fun new trend on TikTok is these crispy onion rings from Hungry Happens inspired by the viral Parmesan Potatoes. The idea is similar in adding a thin layer of shredded cheese to a baking sheet and laying a thin layer of any vegetable on top!
When you try the viral parmesan potatoes, the potatoes actually get very crisp in the oven. The onion version doesn’t get as crispy because onions just have so much more moisture and there’s no breading involved in the recipe. Still, all the shredded cheese around does get really crispy and the combination of the onions, crisp cheese and garlicky seasoning I use is so good!
Enjoy them on their own with a creamy dip like my ranch dip or try them as a burger topping with my air fryer hamburgers.
Happy Cooking!

Onion Ring Chips Ingredients

- Onions: Use 2 small or medium sized onions to fit a standard baking sheet. I used yellow onions for best flavor but white onion, red onions and even shallots work.
- Shredded cheese: The original viral recipe is made with shredded parmesan cheese and that’s the most popular choice, but I’ve also made it with shredded cheddar cheese and it works the same. You can shred your own or use pre-shredded.
- Seasoning mix: I use a mix of paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Use 1 ½ – 2 teaspoons of any seasoning you like and you can even just eyeball it.
- Oil: You can brush olive oil or avocado oil on the onion rings or use a cooking spray to make it easier.
How to Make Onion Ring Chips

Crispy Onion Rings
Ingredients
- 1 (8-ounce) block parmesan or cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 small white onions sliced ⅛-inch thick rounds
- Avocado oil cooking spray
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- Ranch dip for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400℉ and line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Spread the grated cheese on the bottom of the baking dish in a thin even layer.
- Add the onion slices on top of the cheese so they are touching but not overlapping.
- Spray the top of the onion rings with cooking oil spray. In a small bowl, combine the paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Sprinkle on top of the onions.
- Bake until crispy and golden brown, about 20 minutes. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes and then break apart to serve with ranch or your favorite dip.

Recipe Variations
- Pizza toppings: You can add beef pepperoni or olives and banana peppers with italian seasoning for a pizza twist like this video.
- Jalapenos and cream cheese: You can add 1-2 sliced jalapenos on top and a few dollops of cream cheese for a jalapeno popper version.
- Chili oil: Instead of spraying with oil and adding seasoning, brush on about 2 tablespoons of chili oil on top of the onion rings. They make the chips extra crispy and add a great flavor.
- Sliced pickles: Add about ¼ cup of sliced pickles in between the edges of the onion rings – because pickles are crispy cheese are so good together!
Recipe Tips
- Use a mandolin to slice the onion rings. To make chips from onions, you need to keep the onion slices about 1/8-inch in thickness and it’s hard to get that by hand, so use a mandolin to make the job easier and keep them consistent.
- Make sure to use parchment paper. Aluminum foil or wax paper will not work in this recipe. And if you don’t use parchment paper, there’s a risk the cheese will stick to the baking sheet.
- Flip it over for extra crispness. The onion ring chips only need 20 minutes in the oven but if you want to have more crispy edges all over, peel it off the parchment paper and flip the whole tray to the other side. Add an extra 5 minutes of baking time.
- Don’t forget to let them rest. The cheese will look melty out of the oven and not crisp. That’s ok as long as the onions and cheese are golden brown. The key to making the cheese crispy is letting it rest on the baking sheet without touching them.
- Use convection oven setting if you have it. The convection setting is ideal for this recipe because it creates more air circulating around the food which will help to dry out the moisture from the onions to help them crisp.
