Try my banana oatmeal pb smoothie!

I’m very much an oats-in-everything person, and making an oatmeal smoothie is one of my favorite ways to use them. I use rolled oats to bump up the fiber to about 7 grams per serving, and it also has 10 grams of protein, which makes it a really solid option if you’re trying to increase both without overthinking it. It’s creamy, naturally sweet from the banana and maple syrup, and actually keeps me full, which is kind of the whole point. This oatmeal smoothie is what I make when I want something quick and know it’s going to be a couple of hours before I can eat a full meal.

Happy Cooking!

Oatmeal Smoothie Ingredients

Ingredients for smoothie recipe: rolled oats, peanut butter, maple syrup, cinnamon, almond milk, and banana.
  • Old-fashioned oats: Rolled oats work best for this recipe. You can use quick oats if that’s what you have, but I don’t recommend steel-cut oats.
  • Banana: I recommend making smoothies with frozen bananas. The riper they are when you freeze them, the better! If you use a fresh banana, make sure it’s very ripe.
  • Peanut butter: I use peanut butter in this oatmeal smoothie, but any nut butter works, like cashew butter or almond butter.
  • Maple syrup: Honey or agave are good substitutes.
  • Almond milk: I use unsweetened almond milk, but any milk you have works great. Feel free to experiment with your favorite flavors.
  • Ground cinnamon: It’s optional, but I like adding a little cinnamon to the smoothie (it helps control blood sugar levels), and even sprinkling some on top when I drink it.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • ¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 large frozen banana
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Place all the ingredients in a high-speed blender, and blend for 60–120 seconds until you get a smooth and creamy texture.
  • Taste the smoothie, adding more milk if it's too thick or adding more sweetener if it's not sweet enough for you. Pour into a cup or mason jar. Enjoy immediately, or store in fridge for up to 24 hours.

Notes

  • My Top Tip: Don’t add ice. It just dilutes the smoothie. Your frozen banana takes the place of ice! I also like using chilled almond milk.
  • Storage: The oatmeal smoothie tastes best when it’s fresh. Store any leftovers in an airtight mason jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Recipe Variations

  • Boost the protein: Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder. If you have vanilla or peanut butter protein powder, those will taste great with the other flavors in this recipe.
  • Add Greek yogurt: For a thicker smoothie with even more nutrients, add a few spoonfuls of your favorite Greek yogurt.
  • Make smoothie pops: Pour the smoothie mixture into popsicle molds and freeze overnight. Kids love them! Follow the instructions in my yogurt popsicle recipe for help.

Recipe Tips

  1. Get in the habit of freezing bananas. Frozen fruit is the secret to a smooth, creamy smoothie. When your bananas get too ripe on the counter, store them in a freezer-safe bag in the freezer so they’re ready when you’re in the mood for a smoothie. Read more of my tips on how to freeze bananas.
  2. Use a high-speed blender. I make my smoothies in my Vitamix. It has a “smoothie” button that does all the work for me.
