Put Avocado in Your Smoothie!

When I want to make a smoothie without bananas, I often make this avocado smoothie instead. That’s because avocados give smoothies that same rich and creamy texture that bananas give them, but without overpowering the flavor. In fact, you won’t even taste the avocados! I went with a tropical flavor for this avocado smoothie and added pineapple, kale, coconut water and lime juice with a touch of maple syrup. So you’ll get some healthy fats, good fiber and lost of energy!

Happy Cooking!

Avocado Smoothie Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe: honey, coconut water, kale, 2 avocados, lime, and pineapple chunks.
  • Coconut Water: My liquid of choice here for the tropical vibes but you can also use coconut milk.
  • Ripe Avocado: Here’s how to cut an avocado. If you cut your avocado and it’s not ripe, you can still use it for the smoothie.
  • Frozen Pineapple Chunks: Using frozen pineapple is convenient, and it also makes for a creamier smoothie. You can also use fresh pineapple, mango or even banana.
  • Kale: Curly kale or lacinato kale both work in this recipe. You can also substitute it for spinach.
  • Maple Syrup: Add this for a sweeter smoothie or leave out if you prefer. Honey also works.
  • Lime: Use fresh lime juice but you can also skip this.

Recipe Tips

  1. Add the liquid first. Pour in the coconut water and lime juice, then add everything else. Layering the liquid at the bottom of the blender creates a vortex that sucks the solid ingredients towards the blade, minimizing the need to stop the blender to shake or stir.
  2. Use more liquid If needed. Depending on the size of your avocado and your smoothie thickness preference, you may need to pour in some extra coconut water to create a sippable consistency.
  3. Bulk it up. Try a scoop of vanilla or unflavored protein powder or 2 tablespoons of chia seeds, flaxseeds, or hemp seeds for other sources of protein.
  4. Stir before you pour. It’s easy for unblended avocado chunks to hide in this smoothie! Stir the mixture in the blender to make sure there are no unblended pieces before pouring the smoothie into glasses.
  5. Clean Your Blender the Easy Way. Add water and a small squirt of dish soap to the blender jar, then blend on high to clean the inside of your blender.
