My Air Fryer Bread is So Good!

Everyone is making sourdough bread and I’m over here making Air Fryer Bread—haha! Why? Because it’s a no-knead recipe made with 6 ingredients and only needs half an hour in the air fryer. It’s half the time that it would take to cook bread in the oven and it’s great for hot days, when you don’t want to heat up your kitchen.

My family was so impressed with this loaf of bread that I was excited to tell everyone I had made it in my air fryer!

Air Fryer Bread Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe: flour, instant yeast, salt, honey, oil, and water.
  • All-purpose flour: I decided to make my air fryer bread with all-purpose flour even though it’s more traditional to use bread flour. But I don’t always have bread flour on hand and I figured you may not either. If you do want to use bread flour though, just know that it requires more liquid so add ¼ cup more water.
  • Oil: I usually use olive oil.
  • Honey: Sugar will feed the yeast and help the bread rise! You could use maple syrup instead of honey.
  • Instant yeast: This type of yeast works quicker than other varieties.

How to Make Air Fryer Bread

Flour, yeast, salt, water, olive oil, and honey in a large bowl.
Step 1: In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, salt, warm water, olive oil, and honey.
After forming a shaggy dough.
Step 2: Use a rubber spatula or wooden spoon to combine until a slightly shaggy, sticky dough forms.
After kneading into a soft ball and placed in an oiled bowl.
Step 3: Use your hands to knead the dough until it forms a soft ball.
After doubling in size.
Step 4: Set the dough aside, wipe the bowl, and then lightly coat it with oil before returning the dough. Cover with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and allow it to rise in a warm area until doubled in size.
After forming the dough into a smooth dough ball placed in a large parchment lined bowl.
Step 5: Prepare a piece of parchment paper large enough to lift the bread in and out of the air fryer in a clean bowl. Lightly dust your hands with flour and shape the risen dough into a smooth ball by folding the dough under itself in the bowl. Transfer the shaped dough to the parchment paper. Cover and let it rise again.
Dough after its second rise with a ½ inch deep cut on top and placed in the air fryer basket with parchment paper.
Step 6: Carefully transfer the parchment paper and dough into the hot air fryer basket. Bake.
Bread after cooking for 15 minutes and flipped.
Step 7: Carefully lift the parchment paper and the bread out of the air fryer and use tongs to flip the loaf. Then, lift the parchment paper and bread back into the air fryer.
Bread after finished cooking, flipping top side to show well browned crust.
Step 8: Cook until the bread is baked through.

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, salt, warm water, olive oil, and honey. Use a rubber spatula or wooden spoon to combine until a slightly shaggy, sticky dough forms. Use your hands to knead the dough until it forms a soft ball.
  • Set the dough aside, wipe the bowl, and then lightly coat it with oil before returning the dough. Cover with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and allow it to rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 50-60 minutes.
  • Prepare a piece of parchment paper large enough to lift the bread in and out of the air fryer in a clean bowl. Lightly dust your hands with flour and shape the risen dough into a smooth ball by folding the dough under itself in the bowl. Transfer the shaped dough to the parchment paper. Cover and let it rise again for about 15 minutes.
  • During the second rise, preheat the air fryer to 400°F and remove the basket if possible. After rising, use a sharp knife to make a ½-inch deep cut on top of the dough. Carefully transfer the parchment paper and dough into the hot air fryer basket. Make sure you have at least 2 inches of space above the top of the bread to allow the dough to rise; lightly flatten with your hands if needed.
  • Cook for 5 minutes at 400°F, then reduce the temperature to 350°F and continue cooking for 15 minutes. Carefully lift the parchment paper and the bread out of the air fryer and use tongs to flip the loaf. Then, lift the parchment paper and bread back into the air fryer to continue cooking for 15 more minutes. This will ensure your bread is evenly cooked through.
  • Once done cooking, tap the bottom of the loaf to check for doneness. It should sound hollow. Carefully remove the parchment paper and loaf and allow to cool completely before slicing, about 45 minutes.

Notes

Storage: Kept in a zipper-lock bag or wrapped in plastic wrap, the bread will last 2-4 days when kept at room temperature.

  • Add fresh herbs. Add ¼ cup of chopped, fresh parsley, dill, or chives! I think this herby bread would go well with something savory like kale soup.
  • Grated cheese. I certainly won’t say no to cheese! Mix ½ cup of shredded cheddar, parmesan, or mozzarella into the bread dough.
  • Add whole grains. You could substitute a cup or a cup and a half of the all-purpose flour for whole-wheat flour.
  • Mix in seeds. Add ¼ cup of pumpkin or sunflower seeds to the bread dough! I love the texture this gives the loaf.

My Best Air Fryer Bread Tips

  1. Make sure the parchment paper doesn’t touch the top of the air fryer. Parchment paper is safe to use in the air fryer but it can brown really quickly and affect the taste of the bread.
  2. Don’t forget to flip the bread halfway through. The air fryer does a good job or circulating heat all around the loaf, but there is more heat at the top than the bottom. Flipping the bread in the air fryer halfway through will help it bake evenly.
  3. Use a meat thermometer to know when the bread’s done. When the thermometer reads 190°F, the bread is baked!
  4. Allow the dough to rise in a warm spot. I usually use my (off!) oven or toaster oven. Yeast likes warm temperatures, so this will help the bread rise!

Recipe Help & Common Questions

How do I store air fryer bread?

Kept in a zipper-lock bag or wrapped in plastic wrap, the bread will last 2-4 days when kept at room temperature.

My bread didn’t grow in size—what did I do wrong?

If you bread doesn’t rise, the yeast was probably dead! It could’ve been expired or you could’ve used too hot of water, which kills yeast.

Do I really have to wait to slice the bread?

Yes, you should! The texture of the bread will change as it cools. If you slice the bread hot, it may taste gummy.

Can you use all-purpose gluten-free flour?

    1. Yumna J. says:

Hi Carol! I haven’t tried making this recipe gluten free yet but a 1:1 substitution all-purpose gluten-free flour should work. Please let me know how it turns out for you if you end up trying it!

  3. Grace says:

I have an air fryer oven Instant Vortex. What if anything should I do different? Thank you

    1. Yumna J. says:

I don’t think you need to do anything differently. Just make sure there is plenty of room at the top of the oven so the bread doesn’t burn. And the timing may be off by 5 minutes so you can check on that too just to make sure!
