Lighter Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe!

Buffalo chicken dip is one of my go-to party snacks, but I wanted a version that felt a little lighter without losing the creamy, cheesy, spicy goodness. So I do a “healthy” buffalo chicken dip that uses Greek yogurt, but it still has plenty of cheese and just the right amount of heat from the hot sauce. I make it for game days, family get-togethers, or just for a lazy Friday night with some tortilla chips and celery on the side.

Happy Cooking!

Healthy Buffalo Chicken Dip Ingredients

Ingredients to make the recipe
  • Shredded chicken: Instant pot shredded chicken or boiled chicken that you shred up is great! You can even shred up a rotisserie chicken if you like.
  • Cream cheese: Room temperature, full-fat cream cheese is best!
  • Greek yogurt. Go for plain, full-fat Greek yogurt for the creamiest texture.
  • Hot sauce: I love using Frank’s hot sauce but any type will do.
  • Shredded cheese. I usually use shredded cheddar, but you can get creative with your shredded cheese. Any type will work!
  • Seasoning: Garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper are all you need to flavor this buffalo chicken dip. I like to add a little sliced green onion on top for garnish as well!

How to Make Healthy Buffalo Chicken Dip

Bowl with cream cheese, greek yogurt, buffalo sauce, garlic powder, onion powder and cheese before mixed.
Step 1: Add the cream cheese, yogurt, shredded cheese, seasoning and hot sauce to a large bowl.
Bowl of ingredients after mixed.
Step 2: Combine well until there are no more streaks of the cream cheese or yogurt.
Chicken added on top.
Step 3: Add the shredded chicken to the top of the mixture.
Chicken mixed in.
Step 4: Combine well again to ensure the shredded chicken is well coated in the buffalo sauce.
Mixture transferred to baking dish with remainder cheese added on top.
Step 1: Transfer the mixture to your prepared baking dish and add more shredded cheese on top.
After baking in the oven.
Step 2: You’ll know it’s done when the cheese on top starts to turn a golden-brown and is melted.

Recipe Tips

  1. Spray the pan with a non-stick spray. Even though it’s a dip, this mixture will still stick to the sides and the bottom of your pan. I like to use a non-stick spray for easier clean up.
  2. Shred your own cheese. Pre-shredded cheese usually contains anti-caking enzymes in it that can also prevent cheese from melting properly. For the ultimately cheesy bite, use a block of cheese.

Serving Ideas

  • Serve with chips. I love this dip with a bowl of tortilla chips, or even some homemade pita chips.
  • Add crudité. Classic buffalo chicken dip calls for carrot sticks and celery sticks!

Can we mix something else instead of the cream cheese?

    1. Yumna says:

The cream cheese is pretty essential to the flavor and texture, sorry!

I just love this recipe! I make it as described, but I add whole milk or cooking cream to desired texture and I use it as a pasta sauce. Mmmmmmm, so good!

This was so yummy but the 1/2 cup of hot sauce may be too much for us! Next time weโ€™d cut down to 1/4 cup.

Other than that, easy recipe and delicious!

Definitely adjust as needed! Glad you enjoyed!
