My Everything Bagel Seasoning is So Good!

I’ve got to say, everything bagel seasoning is one of those things I always have in my kitchen.

I use it on everything—avocado toast, air fryer veggies, scrambled eggs, you name it. It just makes food more exciting, and honestly, I can’t get enough of it.

Making it at home is a no-brainer. It’s super easy, fresher than anything you’ll buy at the store, and you can tweak it exactly how you like it (I always go a little heavier on the garlic). Once I made this homemade version, I started to wonder why I ever bought it pre-made in the first place!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients for recipe in individual bowls: white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, poppy seeds, and sea salt.
  • Sesame seeds: Everything bagel seasoning recipe has two types: white and black sesame seeds, so I suggest sticking to that if you’re going for the authentic look and flavor.
  • Dried minced garlic: Adds nice garlicky flavor to the blend.
  • Dried minced onion: This is dehydrated onion flakes that are sweet and savory and round out the seasoning.
  • Poppy seeds: These seeds are a classic in this seasoning blend. They are typically found in the spices and seasonings aisle of most grocery stores, but some stores keep them near baking supplies.
  • Flaky sea salt: Use regular salt if you don’t have flaky sea salt, but cut it back by at least half.
  • Make it spicy. Add some chili flakes for a little kick.
  • Add some herbs. Dried herbs like parsley, dill, and oregano gives a little oomph.
  • Give it umami flavor. Add a teaspoon or two of nutritional yeast to give it savory, cheesy flavor.

How to Make Everything Bagel Seasoning

This recipe is so simple – all you need is a small bowl, a spoon, and a jar for storage. My biggest recommendation would be to always start with fresh ingredients because one stale ingredient can ruin the whole batch.

Seasonings in a small bowl before mixing.
Step 1: Add all the ingredients into a small bowl.
After mixing seasoning blend together.
Step 2: Mix until thoroughly combined and transfer to a small jar.

My Best Everything Bagel Seasoning Tips

  1. Make a finer texture: Just pulse the mixture in a spice grinder or food processor, but it’s traditionally kept coarse.
  2. Swap one sesame seed for the other: If you don’t have both black and white sesame seeds, you can use just one type.
  3. Adjust the salt to your preference. If you’re using the seasoning on something already salty, you might want to use less salt in the mix.
  4. Perfect for gifting. Consider making this as a thoughtful gift packaged in a pretty spice jar. You can even personalize it by adding a small note with ideas and recipes to use it.

Recipe Help & Common Questions

How do I store everything bagel seasoning?

Transfer the seasoning blend to a small jar or an airtight container to prevent air and moisture and store in the kitchen cabinet, away from direct sunlight or heat. For best flavor, use it within 3 months. And make sure it’s tightly sealed after each use to prevent moisture, as that can cause the garlic and onion flakes to clump up.

Why is my seasoning clumped together?

Clumping can happen if the seasoning is exposed to moisture. Make sure your jar or container is completely dry before storing, and keep it in a cool, dry place. Adding a couple pieces of uncooked rice to the jar can help absorb any moisture.

I don’t have dried minced garlic and onion. Can I use ground instead?

Yes, you can use ground garlic and onion in a pinch. However, because the ground spices are more concentrated, use about half the amount so they are not overpowering. Keep in mind, the texture will be smoother and the seasoning may not have the same crunch. Shake it up before each use in case the ground ingredients settle to the bottom.
