My Tartar Sauce is So Good!
I used to just grab a jar of tartar sauce from the store until I actually made it myself. It takes five minutes, uses stuff I usually already have, and tastes way better. I go heavy on the pickles and dill because that’s what I like, but you can tweak it depending on what you’ve got. It’s great with fish, obviously, but also surprisingly good on sandwiches.
Tartar Sauce Ingredients
- Mayonnaise: If you want to go lighter, you can use Greek Yogurt, but it doesn’t have the same taste.
- Dijon mustard: If you’re out, you can use regular yellow mustard, but Dijon mustard is traditional.
- Dill pickles: Finely chop the pickles so you don’t get random large chunks.
- Fresh dill: You can use 1 teaspoon of dried dill if you don’t have fresh.
- Green onion: You can also use a shallot. I don’t recommend using a “regular” onion; the flavor will overpower.
- Lemon juice: Fresh lemon juice is best, but if all you have is bottled, it will work.

Recipe Tips
- Chill before serving. I suggest chilling the tartar sauce before serving so all the flavors get a chance to blend together.
- Use relish to save time. Although chopped dill pickles are used in a classic tartar sauce, consider swapping them for relish if you’re short on time. Just make sure it’s dill relish, not sweet.
