  • Fluffy, tender interior: The inside of the potatoes cooks up perfectly tender and fluffy without drying out.
  • Uses less oil than deep-frying: Cooking raw potatoes in an air fryer uses a fraction of the oil as deep frying, but they come out tasting amazing!

  • Yukon gold potatoes: Yukon Golds are the ideal potato for air-frying! With their tender and flavorful skin, there is no need to peel them (plus, the skin crisps up deliciously). Inside, Yukon Golds are buttery and creamy, the perfect counterpoint to that golden crispy outside.
  • Olive oil: Olive oil adds flavor, helps the spices adhere to the potatoes, and results in a crispy outer texture with a tender interior that’s not too dried out.
  • Paprika, garlic powder, salt, & pepper: Adds and enhances flavor for the most delicious golden crust on your potatoes.
  • Cooking spray: Cooking spray is optional. Depending on your air fryer, you may want to spray the air fryer basket before adding the potatoes.
  • Use different potatoes: Red potatoes, fingerlings, or peeled russet potatoes also work; cut into 1-2 inch cubes or wedges.
  • Switch out the spices: Try different spices and flavorings, such as onion powder, a little smoked paprika, Italian seasoning, or another favorite dried herb or spice.
  • Use another oil: Avocado oil is a great substitute or any other vegetable oil that you prefer.
  • Add Parmesan: Add up to ¼ cup grated Parmesan for a cheesy, umami twist.

  3. Spread in an even, single layer in the air fryer.
  4. Air fry, tossing about halfway through the cooking time, until golden and crispy outside and tender inside.

Tips for making the best crispy air fryer potatoes

  1. Cut the potatoes evenly. To ensure even cooking time for all the potatoes, try using potato cubes that are similar in size.
  2. Don’t forget to preheat. While it’s not usually necessary to preheat the air fryer, I think it’s a crucial step to ensure accurate cooking at the temperature you select.
  3. Don’t overcrowd the basket. It’s tempting to throw all the potatoes in there at once. But if you have a smaller air fryer and you overcrowd the basket, you may end up creating a steaming effect instead of crisping effect.
  4. Turn the potatoes half way through cooking. You can shake the basket or use tongs to turn the potatoes. While the air does circulate all around the potatoes, I see better all-around crispiness when I turn them at the halfway point.

How to Store & Reheat Air Fryer Potatoes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Make sure you let them cool completely to avoid moisture buildup in your container.

To reheat, let it at room temp for 15 or so minutes to take the chill off and simply toss back into the air fryer at 380 for 4-6 minutes until warmed and re-crisped.

How Long Will Air Fryer Potatoes Last in the Fridge? They will be good for about 3-4 days in the refrigerator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when my potatoes are done?

Your potatoes are done when the outside is golden and crispy, and the inside is tender and fluffy. Use a fork to check one of the potato cubes, and if the fork goes through the potato easily, it’s done!

How can I make sure my potatoes are crispy?

For crispy air fryer potatoes, spread them in a single layer in your air fryer basket, making sure to not overcrowd them. Depending on the size of your air fryer basket, you may need to cook your potatoes in batches so that they can crisp up. For the crispiest potatoes, you’ll also want to cook them for at least 15 minutes and be sure to turn the potatoes at around the halfway point.

How long should I preheat the air fryer for?

Five minutes is usually enough, but air fryers can vary, so you may want to check your air fryer manual to see if they have any specific recommendations.

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer 380°F.
  • Place the potatoes in a bowl with the olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper, and toss to combine.
  • Transfer the potatoes to the air fryer and arrange in a single layer. You may need to cook in two batches. Cook until crispy with golden brown edges, shaking the basket halfway through, 20-25 minutes total.
  • Remove and add more salt to taste, if desired.

Notes

Storage: Store any leftovers in an airtight container. They will last about 3-4 days in the fridge. To reheat, just place in the airfryer at 360°F for 1-2 minutes or in a toaster oven. You can also reheat in the microwave but the potatoes won’t retain their crispy texture that way.
Substitutes: For best results, follow the recipe as is. However you can switch out the spices if you’d like and use other types of potatoes.

Thanks for sharing your air fryer Crispy Potato recipe! To save total cooking time, I like to microwave my precut potato cubes in the microwave on high for about 2 to 2.5 minutes. I then put them in a mixing bowl
and toss them with either olive oil or avocado oil plus a little sea salt or kosher salt. I then cook them in the air fryer for about 12 minutes until golden brown.
After the air fryer, I return the potatoes to the bowl and toss them with herbs, spices, etc. of my choosing.
    Bon Appetit!

I HAVE THE EMERILL LAGASSE AIR FRYER 360. ARE THE TIMES AND INSTRUCTIONS THE SAME FOR IT AS FOR SMALLER AIR FRYERS?

    1. Yumna J. says:

Hi Phyllis, I have not used that air fryer, but the times should be pretty much the same. Hope you enjoy!

  4. Candi says:

Thank you thank you thank you 🙏🏼
I had been soaking my cut potatoes in water for 10-30mins to remove the starch before air frying (one of the first posts I read said it was a very important step)
It had made me less likely to make them in the air fryer as I like to get in & get the job done😆
So as I never did that with my oven roast/chips/wedge/baked potatoes I went back to the oven.
I just made these without the soaking process & WOW! I’m back in love with my air fryer. They are so delicious, crispy on the outside & SO soft & fluffy inside😋

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

You are so welcome! That is the most perfect way to describe potatoes. Thank you!

      1. Candi says:

Oh I thought I’d share 2 little secret that I’ve been using regarding herbs with potatoes in the air fryer (they probably aren’t secrets, I’m just not a good cook & was excited when I tried it & they worked) So…I was adding herbs at the beginning with everything like salt, pepper, thyme, parsley etc. But I’ve found that if you add them at the final stage after shaking or flipping then you don’t end up with burnt herbs & they are so much more flavorful!
Also if you want to kick it up a notch you can make your own herb infused oil. I’ve got one going at the moment with thyme & rosemary in it.
I’m not a cook at all, I’m just an air fryer addict 😆

        1. Yumna Jawad says:

That is so helpful and a great way to switch it up! A herb infused oil sounds amazing!!

          1. Candi says:

Thank you so much Yumna😊 I’m definitely not great in the kitchen but thought I’d share & maybe someone might find it helpful or inspiring. Have a wonderful 2023🎉
