My Air Fryer Potatoes Are So Good!

I’ll happily eat a plate of baked or fried potatoes anytime, but I don’t always want to deal with the oil and mess of deep frying. I’m obsessed with these Air Fryer Potatoes because they’re a faster way to make baked potatoes, but with less oil and less time

This recipe is really as simple as tossing potatoes with seasoning, then placing the potatoes in an air fryer. I make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer and toss the potatoes halfway through cooking and they always come out with browned crisp edges. I love them as a side to burgers and sandwiches or with my Roasted Chicken with Garlic & Herbs or Garlic Cilantro Baked Salmon.

Air Fryer Potatoes Ingredients

  • Yukon gold potatoes: I like to use skin-on Yukon golds for air frying. Other potatoes like red potatoes, fingerlings, or even peeled russet potatoes also work. Just cut into 1 to 2- inch cubes or wedges.
  • Olive oil: You can substitute with avocado oil or another neutral oil.
  • Spices and seasonings: Along with salt and pepper, I use paprika and garlic powder to add flavor. Try them with onion powder, smoked paprika, Italian seasoning, or other dried herbs and spices.
  • Cooking spray: Cooking spray is optional. Depending on your air fryer, you may want to spray the air fryer basket before adding the potatoes.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer 380°F.
  • Place the potatoes in a bowl with the olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper, and toss to combine.
  • Transfer the potatoes to the air fryer and arrange in a single layer. You may need to cook in two batches. Cook until crispy with golden brown edges, shaking the basket halfway through, 20-25 minutes total.
  • Remove and add more salt to taste, if desired.

Notes

Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days. Make sure you let them cool completely to avoid moisture buildup in your container. To reheat, let it at room temp for 15 or so minutes to take the chill off and simply toss back into the air fryer at 380°F for 4-6 minutes until warmed and re-crisped.
Freezing Instructions: Cool the cooked potatoes and place in a freezer-safe container or bag. You can freeze for up to 3 months and follow the above reheating instructions.

My Best Crispy Air Fryer Potatoes Tips

  1. Cut the potatoes the same size. To make sure the potatoes cook evenly, cut them into similar-sized cubes.
  2. Preheat your air fryer. While it’s not usually necessary to preheat the air fryer, I think it makes a difference to start cooking at the exact temperature you select.
  3. Don’t overcrowd the basket. It’s tempting to throw all the potatoes in there at once. But if you have a smaller air fryer and you overcrowd the basket, you may end up steaming instead of crisping the potatoes.
  4. Turn the potatoes halfway through cooking. You can shake the basket or use tongs to turn the potatoes. The air circulates all around the potatoes, but I really see better all-around crispiness when I turn them at the halfway point.

  1. Stephen says:

    Thank you for this recipe.

The first time I made it, I followed your directions and tips, making sure the pieces were not crowded together. We enjoyed the taste very much, but found the potatoes were too soft around the edges.

But it seemed worth having another go, and this time, after quartering the potatoes, I soaked them in water for an hour and dried them before proceding to the next stages.

This time the potatoes were perfectly crisp all over, and with the added flavour of the spices and other ingredients were very tasty.

So this is how I will prepare this dish in the future, and suggest others give it a go, as well.

Love that! Sounds so good. I’m glad you found your perfect prep method, Stephen!

works. simple instructions, great result. leave skin on if using smaller potatoes for extra texutre.

    1. Yumna J. says:

Yay! I’m so glad it worked well for you, AJ!

  3. Magda says:

This recipe is so good. I’ll be making it many times for sure. Thank you.

    1. Yumna J. says:

I’m so happy to hear that, Magda!

  4. stella says:

i followed this recipe perfectly and the potatoes did not come out cooked at all. i even had them in there for an extra 5 minutes after preheating and they were not cooked, not crispy, and the flavor was awful. i truly don’t know what i did wrong seeing as other commenters say it was good but it was terrible

    1. Yumna J. says:

Bummer, I’m sorry to hear the potatoes didn’t turn out crispy. The crisp definitely comes from cooking them for at least 15 minutes. Did you make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket, and to turn the potatoes at the halfway point?

    2. Don says:

Same here. At ~27 minutes, they were edible, but dry on the surface. Since I did’t have all the ingredients, I tossed them in Italian salad dressing. Maybe the olive oil and fresh ingredients would stick better. Another factor may be the type of air fryer used. Mine is a Ninja Foodi and uses a wire basket and not a more solid-looking shelf like yours.

      1. Yumna J. says:

I’m sorry to hear they didn’t crisp up for you, either. The air fryer model could definitely be a factor. And so could using Italian dressing. Because Italian dressing contains vinegar and possibly a little sugar, the potatoes don’t get nice and crispy like they do with regular oil. Fresh is best for this one!

        1. Yumna J. says:

I just retested this today and the potatoes were fully cooked and crisp after 20 minutes. Is it possible that the potatoes were not cut to the right size? Or it’s possible the air fryer is not strong enough. I’m not sure what went wrong.

  5. Julie says:

Great recipe, potatoes were perfect 👌

    1. Yumna J. says:

Aww, so glad you liked it! Thanks!!

  6. Bret Ancowitz says:

In moving over completely to air frying from oil frying, I’ve been looking long and hard at many recipes to replace my beloved oil fired home fries, but had been mostly disappointed – until this recipe. This is it. Finally. Perfect texturing, with crunchy potatoes with creamy interiors. While it’s always a personal choice, I’d consider doubling the salt and garlic powder, but other family members thought the seasoning was just right. The size (1/2 inch), the time (25 minutes), the oil amount – all perfect. Thank you!

    1. Yumna J. says:

Aww, thank you so much! So happy you love it, Bret!!

  7. Nikki says:

These potatoes came out beautifully. Very tasty. I used russets as that’s what I had. Will definitely be making them again.

    1. Yumna J. says:

Yay, so glad you liked them!!

  8. JoAnn Newcomb says:

      You’re welcome, JoAnn!

  9. Munchie Mike says:

Thanks for sharing your air fryer Crispy Potato recipe! To save total cooking time, I like to microwave my precut potato cubes in the microwave on high for about 2 to 2.5 minutes. I then put them in a mixing bowl
and toss them with either olive oil or avocado oil plus a little sea salt or kosher salt. I then cook them in the air fryer for about 12 minutes until golden brown.
After the air fryer, I return the potatoes to the bowl and toss them with herbs, spices, etc. of my choosing.
    Bon Appetit!

    1. Yumna says:

      Thanks for the tips!

    2. Carol says:

Great idea! Why didn’t I think of that? I’ve been trying to reduce my air fryer cooking time and this will do just that. Sometimes the potatoes are the longest to cook and we are left waiting. Thank you for the tip.

    My family loves this!

Great! It’s such a nice and easy weeknight side dish!

  11. PHYLLIS says:

I HAVE THE EMERILL LAGASSE AIR FRYER 360. ARE THE TIMES AND INSTRUCTIONS THE SAME FOR IT AS FOR SMALLER AIR FRYERS?

    1. Yumna J. says:

Hi Phyllis, I have not used that air fryer, but the times should be pretty much the same. Hope you enjoy!

  12. Candi says:

Thank you thank you thank you 🙏🏼
I had been soaking my cut potatoes in water for 10-30mins to remove the starch before air frying (one of the first posts I read said it was a very important step)
It had made me less likely to make them in the air fryer as I like to get in & get the job done😆
So as I never did that with my oven roast/chips/wedge/baked potatoes I went back to the oven.
I just made these without the soaking process & WOW! I’m back in love with my air fryer. They are so delicious, crispy on the outside & SO soft & fluffy inside😋

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

You are so welcome! That is the most perfect way to describe potatoes. Thank you!

      1. Candi says:

Oh I thought I’d share 2 little secret that I’ve been using regarding herbs with potatoes in the air fryer (they probably aren’t secrets, I’m just not a good cook & was excited when I tried it & they worked) So…I was adding herbs at the beginning with everything like salt, pepper, thyme, parsley etc. But I’ve found that if you add them at the final stage after shaking or flipping then you don’t end up with burnt herbs & they are so much more flavorful!
Also if you want to kick it up a notch you can make your own herb infused oil. I’ve got one going at the moment with thyme & rosemary in it.
I’m not a cook at all, I’m just an air fryer lover 😆

        1. Yumna Jawad says:

That is so helpful and a great way to switch it up! A herb infused oil sounds amazing!!

          1. Candi says:

Thank you so much Yumna😊 I’m definitely not great in the kitchen but thought I’d share & maybe someone might find it helpful or inspiring. Have a wonderful 2023🎉

  13. Gary crossley says:

  14. Matt says:

Thanks for the recipe, how many servings is this and what is the serving size in ounces or grams? Thanks!

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

You’re so welcome! This recipe makes two servings. I don’t have the serving size in ounces or grams, but you can weigh out the full batch and divide that by two.

  15. Rosemarie Filomeno says:

I see the time of 15 min for air fried potatoes, but what temp should it be?

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Preheat the air fryer to 380°F!

  16. Linda says:

  18. Musashi says:

It was amazing the flavor was so outrageous and I loved it so greatly I would make this again.

    1. Yumna J. says:

I’m so happy to hear it!!

  19. Eric Morrow says:

    Not Impressed!!

Followed the recipe to the letter. Result was wedges of baked potato consistency. Not crisp, no crunch. Did not look a thing like the recipe pics

Will Not do this recipe again

    1. Yumna J. says:

I wonder if something could be done differently to change the outcome. The crisp definitely comes from cooking it at least 15 minutes, not overcrowding the basket, and turning the potatoes at the halfway point.

  20. Brittany says:

This was the first thing I made in my new air fryer and it was so good!!! Great recipe!!!

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Yes!! It was the first thing I made in mine too!!

I’ve been wanting an air fryer for a while but wasn’t completely sold on getting yet *another* appliance. You’ve convinced me! First recipe will be your amazing looking potatoes!

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Yes, it definitely is yet another appliance but if you fry a lot this is a great alternative to give you that same satisfaction!
