One of the latest food trends on TikTok is yogurt toast, also commonly called custard toast! This is basically a combination of yogurt and egg whisked together (with sweeteners and flavor enhancers to create a custard), which is then spread over toast and topped with fruit.

Ingredients to make yogurt toast

  • Yogurt: Whole milk yogurt works well for this recipe. You can use low fat yogurt as well, Greek yogurt or even plant-based yogurt.
  • Egg: 1 egg works well for about 4 servings for this recipe.
  • Cinnamon: Used to flavor the yogurt toast, but can be omitted or swapped.
  • Honey: Used to sweetened the toast, but can be omitted or swapped with other sweeteners like granulated sugar, maple syrup or coconut sugar.
  • Bread: Use any bread you like. It helps if the bread is thick and sturdy and not too porous to be able to hold the custard when toasted.

Tips for making yogurt toast

  1. Use the back of a spoon to indent the bread. Depending on how thick the bread is and how runny the custard mixture is, this tip can help keep the custard in place, but it’s not necessary.
  2. Make sure to add in a sweetner or flavor enhancer. The egg and plain yogurt alone doesn’t have the best taste, so you’ll definitely need to add something to make sure it doesn’t taste egg. Great options include cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, lemon zest, orange zest, honey, maple syrup or coconut sugar.
  3. Keep an eye on the yogurt toast in the oven. It can take anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes and some breads oar more likely to burn before others. Just make sure that the custard is set and not jiggly and then you can toast the bread to your likeness and allow for some edges to get caramelized.
  4. Make it in the air fryer. While the oven or toaster oven work great, you can also make the custard toast in the air fryer. Aim for 350 for about 5 minutes.

custard toast substitutions & additions

  • Make it dairy-free. You an make this yogurt toast plant-based by using almond milk yogurt, coconut yogurt or cashew milk yogurt.
  • Add nut butter into the mixture. When you combine the yogurt and egg together, you can whisk in some peanut butter or almond butter to give it a nutty flavor and extra boost of protein.
  • Try different fruits. This works really well with raspberries, blueberries, peaches, nectarines, apples, pears, plums or persimmons.
  • Whisk in fruit for a different color. You can either use fruit puree or heat frozen fruit and strain out the liquid, which is what I did below. It gives the yogurt custard toast a beautiful color from the fruit mixed in.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use plant-based yogurt to make yogurt toast?

Yes, it will still work well with dairy-free yogurt. Just make sure to whisk it well with the egg so that it’s well combined.

Can you make yogurt toast vegan?

I haven’t tried it yet, but it should well well if you mix plant-based yogurt with a flax egg instead of the yogurt and egg combination.

Do we have to add fruit on top of yogurt toast?

No, it’s not necessary to add the fruit, but helps to sweeten the toast naturally and it makes for a better presentation. If you prefer not to use fruit, you can add chocolate, coconut flakes or any other toppings you like.

I love the simplicity of the recipe and novelty of it at the same time. Using just yogurt and egg, you can create something where the sum is better than its parts – no wonder the yogurt toast is a viral TikTok recipe!
