Cottage Cheese Toast Ingredients
- Bread: Sourdough bread has the best flavor and holds up well when toasting but feel free to use your favorite bread here.
- Cottage cheese: Full-fat cottage cheese has a creamier, richer texture, while low-fat cottage cheese is a lighter option but any would work for this toast.
Popular Additions
- Start with seasoned cottage cheese. Consider stirring in fresh or dried herbs, a little minced garlic, or other seasonings to your cottage cheese to amp up the flavor.
- Swap the bread with sweet potato. Toast slices of sweet potato for gluten-free toast, then top with cottage cheese and go crazy with toppings.
- Add an egg to it. Make it a loaded cottage cheese breakfast toast by adding a fried egg on top of your toast. Here’s how to fry an egg so it’s perfect every time.
- Make it crunchy. Sprinkle chopped nuts like walnuts, almonds, or pumpkin seeds on top of your toast for added crunch.
- Add a spicy kick. Drizzle hot sauce or sriracha over your toast to add fiery flavor. A sprinkle of red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper will also do the trick!
How To Make Cottage Cheese Toast
- Spray the sourdough bread slices with cooking spray and toast in a toaster, toaster oven, or stovetop griddle until golden brown and crispy.
- Spread cottage cheese onto each slice of toasted bread.
Cottage Cheese Toast Ideas
Now that you have a base of toasted bread topped with cottage cheese, there are so many ways to top your high-protein cottage cheese cheese. Here are 4 fun ones to try:
- Smoked Salmon Cottage Cheese Toast: Start with cottage cheese on the toasted bread, then add slices of smoked salmon, thinly sliced red onions and sprigs of fresh dill
Pesto Cucumber Cottage Cheese Toast
- Pesto Cucumber Cottage Cheese Toast: Spread basil pesto over your toast with cottage cheese, followed by sliced Persian cucumbers. Finish with freshly ground black pepper.
- Tomatoes and Za’atar Cottage Cheese Toast: Top your cottage cheese toast with diced tomatoes and a sprinkle of za’atar seasoning. It’s a flavorful Lebanese seasoning blend that you can buy or making your own za’atar seasoning.
- Sesame Avocado Cottage Cheese Toast: Top your cottage cheese toast with sliced avocado and sprinkle on sesame seeds. Or take it up a notch and turn it into avocado toast with egg.
Recipe Tips
- Use thick-sliced bread. Go for thick slices of bread so your toast can hold the cottage cheese and all the toppings.
- Don’t skip toasting. This not only creates a stronger piece of bread, but also adds delicious toasty flavor and a nice crunch factor.
- Layer strategically. If using additional toppings, layer them strategically to create a practical, visually appealing, and flavorful combination. Start with the base spread (cottage cheese plus other spreads, if using). Then layer your ingredients by size, starting with the largest ones on the bottom and finishing with a garnish on top.
Recipe Help & FAQs
If you have leftovers of cottage cheese toast, you can keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Keep in mind that by then, the bread will likely be soggy and all toppings will soften. If you have leftover toppings, it’s best to store them separately in a container and use them to make fresh toast when needed.
When preparing cottage cheese on toast recipes ahead of time, it’s best to keep all the parts separate and assemble just before you eat. Store prepped veggies in an airtight container. When ready to serve, all you have to do is toast the bread and assemble.
