Summary

  • Family-friendly: Oven baked French fries are a family-friendly option that both kids and adults love to nibble on.
  • Simple side dish: French fries are basically a 1-ingredient side with a little olive oil and salt. They’re easy to prep and bake and let you focus on making your main dish.
  • Convenience: Making oven-baked French fries at home is convenient for busy moms, as they can simply cut up the potatoes, season them, and pop them in the oven to bake. There’s minimal hands-on time required, allowing moms to focus on other tasks while the fries cook.
  • A healthier alternative to deep frying: Healthier since deep-fried fries require a lot more oil for cooking. By baking them in the oven, you can reduce the amount of unhealthy fats and calories in your family’s diet.

Ingredients to Make Crispy Oven Fries

  • Potatoes: Russet potatoes work best for homemade fries in the oven. That’s why they’re called baking potatoes. Other starchy potatoes, like Yukon Gold, will work well. It’s best to avoid waxy potatoes like reds or fingerlings.
  • Oil: Olive oil give these french fries great flavor. But any high heat oil like canola or vegetable will work well.
  • Seasonings: Paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, or play with your own mix!
  • Potato swaps: Any starchy potato will work in place of russet potatoes, like Yukon Gold.
  • Customize the flavor: A sprinkle of cayenne pepper, finely chopped garlic, parmesan cheese, or chopped fresh or dried parsley are also great options for seasoning your fries. Using seasoning blends like lemon pepper, ranch seasoning and even taco seasoning make french fries fun and flavorful.

How to Make baked French Fries

  • Slice the potatoes lengthwise into about 5-6 slices.
  • Cut each of those slices into thin sticks, about ¼ inch thick. The thinner you cut them, the more crisp they will get.

  • Fill a bowl with water and add the potatoes to it. Soak the french fries, and feel free to switch out the water a couple times if you find the potatoes turn pink or brown. That’s a normal oxidation reaction.
  • Drain the potatoes and dry them really well with a paper towel.
  • Toss them with olive oil and seasoning and arrange them on the baking sheet, making sure they are not overlapping too much.

Tips for Making the Best Crispy Oven Baked Fries

  1. Russet potatoes are the best choice for these oven French fries. Their skins are thicker and dryer than those of other potatoes, helping them crisp up well in the oven.
  2. Cut the potatoes into similar sizes. This will ensure that they cook through evenly.
  3. Don’t skip the soaking. This is the best secret tip for getting crisp texture for oven-baked fries. Soaking helps draw out the starch, making the fries firmer and less likely to clump together in the oven.
  4. Make sure the french fries aren’t touching on the baking sheet. This is key in helping the cook evenly and get crispy. If they are overlapping, they will steam rather than get crispy.

I have tried at least 6 “crispy” oven baked fries. I keep coming back to this one as it gives me the crispiest oven-fried French fries. I do use a couple cookie sheets to space my fries a little farther apart than the photo example.

My family enjoys different seasonings, but their favorite is the “everything” bagel topping blend.
