Homemade Ranch Seasoning is Soo Good!

Ranch has always been one of those flavors I reach for without thinking about it, which is exactly how I ended up wanting to make my own version. Homemade ranch seasoning lets me control what goes in the jar and tweak the balance depending on how I’m using it. Instead of the usual buttermilk powder, which can be hard to find, I use nutritional yeast. I like keeping this mix on hand for dressings, dips, and even sprinkling over veggies or potatoes. Once I started making homemade ranch seasoning, the store-bought packets stopped feeling necessary.

Happy Cooking!

Homemade Ranch Seasoning Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe in individual bowls: dried buttermilk powder, dried parsley, dill, and chives, onion powder, garlic powder, sugar, mustard powder, black pepper, and salt.
  • Nutritional yeast: Adds a savory, cheesy flavor. You can use dried buttermilk powder instead if you are okay with dairy.
  • Dried herbs: I like to use dried parsley, dill and chives for the classic ranch flavor but any dried green herbs will work.
  • Onion powder and Garlic powder: Use fresh bottles of this as older garlic and onion powder can taste bitter.
  • Sugar: You’ll add just a touch to balance the flavors. Feel free to skip if you avoid sugar. Stick to granulated sugar as brown sugar will add moisture you don’t want in a spice mix.
  • Mustard powder: Adds a touch of tang and helps emulsify the mixture when you use it to make a dressing.
  • Salt and black pepper: I like to use regular table salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Recipe Tips

  1. Customize to your tastes. Add a touch of heat with red pepper flakes, extra tanginess with dried lemon zest, or even a smoky element with smoked paprika. Similarly, if you prefer a certain flavor to be more pronounced, feel free to adjust the quantity accordingly.
  2. Skip the bowl to avoid extra dishes. Add all the ingredients directly to your container, like a pint-size jar or spice jar with a tight-fitting lid. Shake until combined. A small funnel makes this super easy!
  3. Shake before using. Some ingredients may settle over time – give the jar a good shake before each use to ensure even distribution of herbs and seasonings.
  4. Turn it into a dressing. To make a vegan ranch dressing, whisk together ½ cup vegan mayo, ½ cup plain plant-based yogurt, ¼ cup plain unsweetened plant based milk and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. Add 2 tablespoons of homemade ranch dressing and whisk until smooth. Chill for at least 30 minutes before using. If you are ok with dairy, you can use the same ratios with dairy products.

FAQs

Can I use fresh herbs instead of dried in this recipe?

You can experiment with fresh herbs but keep in mind that their high water content will affect the texture and shelf life of the overall seasoning. If you use fresh herbs, I recommend storing the seasoning in the fridge for up to 4 days and avoid freezing it.

How much homemade dry ranch seasoning equals one packet of store-bought mix?

This usually depends on the brand but typically, a standard store-bought packet of ranch seasoning contains about 1 – 1.25 ounces of the seasoning mix. Therefore, you would need approximately 2 tablespoons of homemade seasoning.
