This homemade Chocolate Granola is the perfect sweet treat made with rolled oats, flaxseeds, cocoa powder and sweet chunks of dark chocolate!
Making homemade granola is as easy as mixing ingredients in a pan and baking them together. Adding chocolate to that homemade granola is a game changer when it comes to snacking. It’s a stunningly healthy way to energize at any time of the day or night with a homemade treat on its own or with yogurt.
Ingredients to make the recipe
- Rolled oats: With their high level of natural fiber that helps reduce cholesterol, rolled oats are the base of most granola recipes like this one. Opt for rolled or old fashioned instead of quick.
- Flaxseeds: They are rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids and deliver an amazing amount of natural fiber ideal for improving digestion. They help bulk up the granola, add texture and nutrients. Don’t grind them. Keep the whole.
- Chocolate and cocoa powder: This is where all the chocolate comes from. Opt for unsweetened cocoa powder and a chopped chocolate bar instead of chocolate chips for larger chunks and less sweetness.
- Honey and vanilla extract: For sweetening the recipe, but feel free to swap it for agave syrup or maple syrup.
- Coconut oil: Melt it and use it to combine the ingredients together so they get sticky and blend well.
- Cinnamon and salt: For flavoring; you can add nutmeg, ginger, cardamom or other spices here instead of some or all of the cinnamon. But don’t skip the salt since it helps to round out the flavor.
How to make chocolate granola
- Add the coconut oil, honey, vanilla, cocoa powder, salt and cinnamon to a bowl.
- Stir until combined.
- Add in the oats and flaxseeds.
- Stir until well mixed.
Bake and fold the chocolate
- Spread the mixture onto a baking sheet.
- Add the chopped chocolate, stir and let cool.
Tips for making the recipe
- Make is sweeter by increasing the amount of honey in the recipe. The unsweetened coco powder can be very bitter for some. If you like things on the sweeter end of the granola spectrum, feel free to add 2-3 more tablespoons of the sweetener.
- Use dark or semi-sweet chocolate bar rather than chocolate chips. Chocolate chips contain a lot more sugar than a typical bar, which can alter the flavor of the granola. Just chop the bar into medium pieces (~ ½” or less).
- Add fruits to the granola recipe. I think the best fruits with the chocolate flavor are dried cranberries or tart dried cherries. If you’re adding dried fruit, I recommend adding ¾ cup at the same time as the chopped chocolate. You can also add ½ cup of coconut flakes if you prefer a chocolate and coconut combination.

I like to place some of the chocolate granola on top of some Greek yogurt for a quick easy and healthy breakfast, or pour over some milk to enjoy. Its also great to top muffins and other baked goods to add a layer of texture. It’s also a great on the go snack!
I make my granola with honey, so it isn’t truly vegan, but you can easily swap this for maple syrup or stevia to make this totally plant based.

- 4 cups rolled oats
- ½ cup flaxseeds
- ⅓ cup coconut oil melted
- ⅓ cup honey
- 5 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 cup chopped dark chocolate pieces
- Preheat oven to 275°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the coconut oil, honey, vanilla, cocoa powder, salt and cinnamon. Stir until a smooth paste forms.
- Fold in the oats and flaxseeds. Mix until all the chocolate paste is well distributed and coats all the oats.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking sheet and spread into an even layer.
- Bake for 50 minutes, stirring once at about 30 minutes in to redistribute the oats.
- Remove from the oven and sprinkle the chopped chocolate over the top. Stir slightly (just a couple of swirls) to form some clusters.
- Allow to cool completely before storing in an airtight container at room temperature. Makes about 6 cups.
