Piña Colada Smoothies are soo easy and soo good!

Pina colada smoothie is one of my favorite summer smoothies to make for myself and my kids. It has that pineapple-coconut flavor that always tastes like a tropical vacation to me, but without the fake syrupy taste you get from bottled smoothies or the pump-style stuff from shops. This one just tastes fresher and a lot more like actual fruit.
I also like that it doesn’t take much to make this pina colada smoothie. The frozen banana makes it thick and creamy, the Greek yogurt gives it a little thickness, and everything blends up in a couple of minutes. It’s an easy one to throw together when it’s hot out, and everybody wants something cold. (Especially if you’re like me and overbuy pineapple in the summer!)
Happy Cooking!

Piña Colada Smoothie Ingredients

- Fresh or frozen fruit: Frozen bananas are important here because they thicken the smoothie and make it creamier without needing ice, which would water it down. You can use fresh pineapple (see my tips on how to cut pineapple if you need help) or frozen pineapple chunks. If your pineapple is not very sweet, you can taste it after blending and add a little sweetener if needed.
- Greek yogurt: This makes the smoothie thicker and gives it a little more staying power. Plain yogurt works best, so the pineapple and coconut stay front and center. You can use flavored Greek yogurt. I would go with coconut, pineapple, or vanilla-flavored. If you want to keep it dairy-free, you can swap in a dairy-free yogurt, but the texture may be a little looser depending on the brand.
- Coconut: The shredded coconut and coconut milk are what give this smoothie that pina colada flavor. Use coconut milk from a carton here, not canned, unless you plan to thin it out. If you want a stronger coconut flavor, use unsweetened shredded coconut and make sure it is blended fully so the texture stays smooth.

Recipe Tips
- Use frozen bananas. Blended frozen bananas create a creamier texture than non-frozen ones (plus, you won’t have to add ice). If possible, I like to use overripe bananas that are naturally sweeter in flavor.
- Use a high-speed blender. There’s nothing worse than drinking a chunky smoothie! If you don’t have a high-speed blender, blend for an extra minute, and stir your smoothie every once in a while with a long spoon to help the ingredients mix together.
- Add sweetener. Thanks to the banana, pineapple, and coconut, this smoothie is naturally sweet, but if you’d prefer an even sweeter version, you can add a little honey or maple syrup to taste.
Serving Ideas
- Add toppings. Whether I’m making a smoothie bowl, or just adding a garnish to my faux piña colada, I love topping this smoothie with homemade granola, shaved coconut, and fresh fruit.
- Pair with more healthy breakfast favorites. For a full, hearty breakfast, I love pairing my piña colada smoothie with egg white bites, quiche, or a chocolate peanut butter granola bar.

great recipe, loved the addition of the yogurt!
So happy to hear that you liked it!
This was delicious
Thanks so much, Theresa!
Isn’t Greek yogurt, plain yogurt, and sour cream dairy products?
Yes!
Obviously yogurt is dairy but it’s an ingredient in your non-dairy/vegan smoothie. It’s easy enough to modify to be truly non-dairy but it’s misleading to call Greek yogurt non-dairy. I’m lactose intolerant and I really appreciate when people take food allergens and intolerances seriously.
The smoothie looks delicious, I look forward to trying a non-dairy modified version today. Thank you!
You can purchase lactose free Greek yogurt, but I do agree, it is misleading
I don’t do dairy, so this is a perfect smoothie for me.
Hope you enjoy!
I made this according to the recipe and all I can taste is the banana. Sadly to me, it doesn’t taste at all like a piña colada, more like a banana smoothie
You could try adjusting the ratio of banana and pineapple in that case! 🙂
I love your recipe but why don’t you give any quantities?? Thanks for your great work
The quantities for each ingredient can be found on the recipe card!
Bananas….nope.
Not a part of a Pina Colada
This is not a Piña Colada, it’s just a smoothie that tastes like a Piña Colada!
Your nutritional information states 356 kcals and 58 GRAMS OF SUGAR per serving?! really?
Yes. Fruits can have a lot of sugar in them.
What if you don’t like Greek yogurt. Is there an alternative ingredient?
You can use plain yogurt or even sour cream as well!
What kind or brand of coconut milk do you use? From the can or from the carton? I find they all have different sweetness and consistency I never know which type to use where. Thank you! 🇨🇦
I use the one from the carton – I like the one by Califia Farms, and they have a toasted coconut one I especially love for this smoothie!
Hello
Do you use canned coconut milk for this recipe?
Thank you
Hi! No, I don’t. I use the kind that comes in the carton in the fridge section.
Hello! Thank you for this amazing looking smoothie recipe. Do you use canned coconut milk? Or the kind that comes in the carton in the fridge section next to the regular milk?
You’re so welcome! I use the kind that comes in the carton in the fridge section.
