Ingredients & substitutions

  • Yogurt: Use a full fat yogurt for the best texture and flavor. Vanilla yogurt is a great base to use, but you can use any flavor you like.
  • Fruit: Fresh strawberries and blueberries add a great pop of color and it’s a tasty way to get some fruit into your family’s diet. You can make this bark with other fresh fruits like mango, raspberries or kiwi fruit.
  • Granola: Try this homemade granola recipe, make your own or use any store-bought ones you like. You can also skip the granola and add something else crunchy like nuts, seeds, or even chocolate chips!
Ingredients to make the recipe

Tips for making frozen bark

  1. Use full fat yogurt. Using yogurt with full fat means that the texture will less likely get icy when frozen. It will also have a better taste that’s more creamy.
  2. Chop everything small. Small fruits like blueberries work very well here and chopping larger fruits to be about the size of blueberries helps with cutting the bark. Make sure the fruits are not too bulky either so the bark looks flat.
  3. Line your baking sheet. This will help to remove the bark easily from the tray, if you don’t line it, the yogurt will freeze to it and it will be really tough to remove. Use parchment or wax paper to line the entire surface of your sheet pan.
  4. Allow time for the bark to set. It will take around 3 hours for the bark to fully set in the freezer. Make it the night before to enjoy the next day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use frozen berries instead of fresh?

    1. Yumna J. says:

Hi, great question! You can use fresh or frozen fruits. That said, if you’re using larger fruits like strawberries, it’s best to use fresh so you can slice them into smaller pieces more easily.

  2. Jennifer Vercruysse says:

Would these stay hard for a child’s lunch?

    1. Yumna J. says:

Hi Jennifer, I don’t recommend sending this to school. It will most likely melt and turn back into yogurt before your child gets to eat it.

  3. marlene says:

I have made this a few times and it is awesome!!!! I did feel like something was a little off and I believe it’s because I used a nonfat vanilla Greek yogurt. I’m going to do it with the full fat like you said. Also, I tried it with hot honey in the mix. It was good but where I drizzled the hot honey it didn’t freeze. So instead when I take it out of the freezer I drizzle the hot honey over. It’s spicy, but oh so good. For the granola I used the brand KIND (flavor: peanut butter clusters), plus I shook some peanut butter powder over it. Then I melted down chocolate chips (LILLYS brand, no sugar—they use stevia). I also put in the fruit. Thank you so much for this recipe!!!!!

    1. Yumna J. says:

Aww I love to hear that, Marlene! Thanks so much for sharing all your tweaks, I love idea of drizzling hot honey on top for a little bit of spice!!

  4. Mary Jo says:

I just made this. I really like it, but I think it was my fruit. It tasted someone bitter/sour. I used strawberries and blueberries. The strawberries weren’t very sweet. The blueberries were good. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    1. Yumna J. says:

That can happen, especially outside of berry season! If your berries are a little sour, I recommend adding mango, chocolate chips, dried fruit, or even a drizzle of maple syrup, honey, or chocolate to sweeten up your yogurt bark.

  5. Erin Driver says:

Would sunflower seeds work instead of granola? Maybe seeds or nuts would get too soggy?

    1. Yumna says:

      Sure, that would work well!

  6. Ashley Ortega says:

This was good, but maybe I cut my strawberries a little thick? My kids were complain that they couldn’t bite through the berries. Does everyone else slice the fruit super thin?

    1. Yumna says:

You can also let it temper a little a room temperature for a bit before enjoying to soften the fruit a bit, or dice them into smaller pieces. Hope this helps.

  7. Alice says:

    What size baking sheet

    1. Yumna says:

I call for using a quarter sheet pan lined with wax paper. The size of a quarter sheet pan is 9 1/2” x 13”.

      1. Alice says:

        Thank you

  8. Mary Jonah says:

Does it have to be whole milk yogurt, or can I use low fat yogurt?

    1. Yumna J. says:

I recommend whole milk, low fat has more water content and can turn icy. That being said you can try it!

  9. Joyce says:

Hi, just made this but can I leave it to freeze overnight before cutting it into pieces for my child’s break at school? I’m trying to get her to eat healthier options at break time. Also does it need covered before putting into the freezer? X

    1. Yumna J. says:

Hi Joyce, I don’t recommend sending this to school. It will most likely melt and turn back into yogurt before she gets to eat it. You don’t want to cover it with anything to avoid whatever you use, plastic wrap, etc. getting stuck/frozen in the bark.

  10. Kathy says:

My recipe for this got very “icy.” I used Stonyfield Organic Vanilla Whole Milk yogurt. If this is the wrong thing to use, please give me an example of what I should be using.

    Thank you!

    1. Yumna J. says:

Hmm, did it get icy after staying in the freezer for a day or so or right away? Sounds like it might have thawed and then refroze, is that a possibility?

      1. Kathy says:

I checked it after 5 hours and it was icy. I never opened the freezer before that. Is there a different yogurt I should be using?

        1. Yumna J. says:

Hmm, I use Stonyfield. I am not sure why it got icy. Greek yogurt does have less moisture than traditional so try that. You can also try a different brand and see if that does make a difference. Sorry, I am not much help!

      2. Joyce says:

        Will Greek yogurt work?

        1. Yumna says:

Yes, just make sure it is full fat and flavored.

  11. Morgan says:

Great recipe and idea but messy while eating. Rather just have the items in my yogurt.

    1. Yumna J. says:

      Thanks for the feedback, Morgan!

52 calories in the whole thing or a serving?

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

      It is for a serving.

  14. Gio says:

Do you thaw a square the night before in fridge or will it eat from frozen fine?

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Eat it straight from frozen! If you thaw the bark, you’ll have to eat the yogurt with a spoon and not a bark.

  15. Elisa says:

In need of a treat to satisfy that craving, this is a good one. I used plain greek yogurt as the base instead of the whole milk vanilla yogurt. Instead of granola, I added sunflower seeds and silvered almonds

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the recipe!

Hi! How did you transport to the BBQ?! And keep it from melting pretty quick?? Love the recipe but last time I took it somewhere, it became a mess(:

      1. Salma says:

I put it in a glass portable container then when I got to my friends house kept it in freezer until we were ready to eat it.

  21. Agnes says:

I made the recipe and it was delicious.
My addition – added some Nutella, cut up some chocolate wafers.
Once you serve it, it has to be eaten, otherwise it will melt…

I added the leftover frozen yogurt bars to my smoothie in the morning.

          1. Yeilene Ruiz says:

I made this recipe but I didn’t have a lot options for fruit so I used what I had. Strawberries, Green Apples and Cherries were the perfect sweet and tart combination to pair with creamy yogurt and crunchy granola. Since I added apples, I figured that the yogurt mixture needed a dash of cinnamon. This was a nice snack to say goodbye to summer but also welcome fall. Can’t wait to try again with other fruits and with your new line of granola coming soon.

          2. Yumna Jawad says:

That sounds like a delicious combo of fruits! Hope you continue to enjoy it. I can’t wait for you to try the granola!!

  22. Glenys Malyon says:

My yoghurt bark turned out quite icy..used full fat Greek yoghurt. What did I do wrong.thankyou

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

You can also try putting cling wrap over the top layer to prevent it from being icy!

  23. Racelle says:

First time making yogurt bark and I don’t know why I haven’t before. It’s a frozen healthy treat that’s delicious and satisfies the craving for ice cream. I’ve sparkled mine up a bit with a few sprinkles just for fun. It’ll be my go-to snack on these hit summer nights here in FL.

That’s amazing! Such a fun activity!

  31. Angelica Fox says:

For this recipe I used some of my favorite banana flavored granola with strawberries, blueberries, and nuts (for texture). Our freezer isn’t that big so i made half. It was kinda like a frozen deconstructed parfait 😂 but it tasted just as good as when I make parfaits regularly. It’s definitely more appropriate for the hot weather tho, so I was thinking next time I’ll use an ice pop mold instead with some of the fruit blended and then topped with the granola as a nice parfait pop. Perfect for summer!

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

That sounds delicious! I’ve also done the ice pop mold method and it’s so fun, but it needs to be eaten fast.

  32. Marina Haddad says:

Such an easy recipe, I use the high protein yogurt, added fruit, slivered almond and a drizzle of chocolate. We love it after a long bike ride in Florida.

I looooooved the yoghurt bark! It was my first try making and tasting one. I was out of strawberries so I opted for blueberries, banana and granola instead. And drizzled honey on the top! *chefs kiss*

Devoured the whole thing at one go lol.. I’m already planning in my head to make another one the first thing tomorrow.

My family loves this recipe! Super easy to make and makes for a delicious treat.

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

That makes me so happy to hear! I love that!

  44. Katy says:

I love this idea but I tried this with whole milk plain yogurt because that’s what I had on hand, and it turned out with lots of ice crystals. Not sure if it was the type of yoghurt I used?

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

The yogurt should be fine. Ice crystals usually form from other things such as if the doors of the freezer are opened frequently – that might be the reason!

  45. Dee says:

I found this recipe to be not practical. The yogurt melts in your hand, can get too cold to hold, and just gets too messy. Also, I am curious about how you actually store the leftovers.

    1. Yumna J. says:

It’s important to enjoy cold/ right out of the freezer, as it will naturally melt if left outside for too long. As for the leftovers, store it in a bag or airtight container with the pieces separated with parchment. It will keep well for up to 3 months. You can enjoy it right from the freezer for an easy summer snack!

  46. MarciKar says:

You say 2/4 C granola. Do you mean 1/2 C or is it a typo and should it be 1/4 C?
    Thanks!

    1. Yumna J. says:

It should be 1/4 cup! Thank you for spotting that!

  47. September Golden says:

I have left over fresh pineapple and honeydew. Will that work as well?

    1. Yumna J. says:

      Yes, it should work!
