What are overnight oats?
If you’ve never had overnight oatmeal, they’re basically a no-cook method of making oatmeal. So, instead of cooking oatmeal on the stovetop or in the microwave, you soak the raw oats with milk. That soaking process allows the oats to absorb the liquid and soften them enough to eat uncooked. You only need to let the oats soak and rest in the fridge for 2 hours. But, it’s ideal if you soak it overnight…hence the name overnight oats!
The next morning you have a ready-to-eat, delicious, creamy bowl or jar of “oatmeal.” The consistency is like a porridge or pudding. It makes for an easy convenient breakfast that has a more dense and creamy texture than warm oatmeal.
Best of all, you reap all the healthy benefits of oats in a fun grab-and-go breakfast:
- They contain more protein than most grains (5g per serving).
- They’re a rich source of fiber, which helps you feel fuller longer (4g per serving).
- They are a nutrient dense food, which makes your feel more satiated.

Summary
- No-Cook Breakfast: This recipe takes away all morning hassle—no need to fire up the stove or oven. Just mix the night before, chill, and go.
- Two Essential Ingredients: At its core, all you really need to make overnight oats are oats and milk. The Greek yogurt, chia seeds, sweetener, and vanilla extract are highly recommended additions for enhanced flavor and texture.
- Nutrient-Packed: High in protein and fiber, these overnight oats keep you full for longer while offering a lot of nutrients.
- Totally Customizable: Whether you’re a fruit lover, chocolate devotee, or nut enthusiast, there’s a flavor combo for you. You can seriously add or mix in whatever you like – it’s the chef’s kiss of breakfast recipes.
- Perfect for Meal Prep: Prepare it on a Sunday night and wake up to a delicious and nutritious breakfast all week long.
Base Ingredients You need To Make Overnight Oats
You only need two ingredients to make overnight oats, which are, of course, milk and oats. But it probably won’t taste very good, and by adding in Greek yogurt, chia seeds, and a drizzle of your favorite sweetener, you’re really creating a well-rounded breakfast.
- Oats: This is really the only ingredient that’s non-negotiable. Make sure to use plain old-fashioned oats and not quick oats because the consistency is best with rolled oats. You can also use gluten-free oats. Do not use steel cut oats.
- Milk: For the liquid part, you can actually make this with water! But it’s more common to use milk. You can use full fat, 2% or low-fat milk. You can also use plant-based milk like almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk or oat milk.
- Chia seeds (optional): These seeds are packed with tons of nutrition, and they help give the oats a pudding-like texture. So I always like to include them in my base recipe.
- Greek or vegan yogurt (optional): This gives the oats a tangy flavor, creamy texture and boost of protein.
- Vanilla extract (optional): This enhances all the flavors that go into the overnight oatmeal as well as giving it sweetness without any sweetener.
- Sweetener (optional): Use honey or maple syrup to sweeten the mixture, especially because oats can be somewhat bland on their own.
- Toppings: This is where you can have some fun with fresh fruit, dried fruit, nut butters, nuts, seeds and spices (like cinnamon, nutmeg or cardamom). There are so many topping ideas and combinations, and I think that’s what makes this such a great versatile recipe!
How to make a basic overnight oats recipe – the ratio
It’s all about the ratios to get the consistency you like. So try the suggested ratio below and then add more milk or use less milk until you find what works perfectly for you! Once you nail down the ratio of the basic overnight oats recipe, the sky’s the limit with the flavor combinations and toppings.
The ratio you want to use for just oats and a liquid:
1 part oats + 1 part milk
Here’s my simple ratio when adding chia seeds:
1 part oats + 1 part milk + ⅛ part seeds
The above is really my ideal texture, it’s creamy with enough liquid that it doesn’t feel like soup. That being said please adjust the ratios based on your preferred texture. Sometimes it takes a little engineering to get that “just right” bite of oatmeal.
“Really good base for overnight oats. In the morning just combine the add ins. We have tried banana and peanut butter and apple and peanut butter using half a banana or half an apple per person, but staying with 1 TBSP peanut butter. Thankyou!” – Fran
How to make 2 Ingredient Overnight Oats
- Add your oats to your preferred jar.
- Top with your milk of choice.
- Mix everything together until all the oats are submerged in milk.
- Refrigerate overnight and eat!
How I make my overnight oat base
- To start, combine old-fashioned oats, chia seeds, Greek or vegan yogurt, and vanilla extract. If you’re using a sweetener add it in now too.
- Top with your choice of milk.
- Mix the overnight oats together until you see no clumps.
- Next, seal or cover with a lid, and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours or overnight.
The next morning, grab a spoon, add your favorite toppings, and dig in!

Reader fav add-ins & flavor combos
I first put this recipe out in 2018, and it’s been made over 1 million times, if not more. I get emails, comments, and DMs on social all the time with people saying how much they love this recipe, and they often include the flavors they dreamt up, which I love. Some of my favorites are below.
“This is a great recipe that I use as a blank canvas to flavor many different ways. Today I used Irish oats, oat milk, Siggi’s non fat vanilla yogurt, Penzey’s Pie Spice, and ¼ cup of homemade vanilla apple sauce, and a touch of maple syrup. The smell alone is making me swoon!! I can hardly wait until tomorrow morning.” – Josee Marchessault
- Pistachio Raspberry: Add a handful of crushed pistachios and fresh raspberries along with a drizzle of honey for a colorful, textured twist.
- Mexican Hot Chocolate: Incorporate a dash of cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne pepper to chocolate oats for a spicy twist on a classic.
- Pumpkin Pie: Canned pumpkin, pumpkin spice, and a dollop of whipped cream on top has made this a fall favorite among readers.
- Maple Sweet Potato: A spoonful of cooked, mashed sweet potato combined with a drizzle of maple syrup, a sprinkle of cinnamon, a pinch of nutmeg, and chopped pecans.

My Top 6 Overnight Oatmeal Recipe Ideas
I literally eat overnight oats 5 days a week because the flavor combinations and recipe variations are in the millions. Once you get your base recipe to where you like it, texture and taste wise you’ll be adding mix-ins and toppings. Below are six of my fav recipe variations that I make at home!
Peanut Butter Jelly:
It’s like having a peanut butter jelly sandwich in overnight oats form. Layer peanut butter, strawberry jelly, fresh cut strawberries and crushed peanuts. It has a sweet and salty taste that’s irresistible.
Apple Pie
With the combination of chopped apples, pecans, maple syrup and ground cinnamon, this variation is a great fall recipe that has a warm sweet taste and satisfying crunch from the fruit and nuts.
Banana Nutella
The name of this recipe says it all – bananas and Nutella – match made in heaven, and a great flavor for kids to try! The banana and Nutella together have a rich decadent taste that makes it feel like you’re enjoying dessert, instead of a nutritious breakfast. Try also adding crushed hazelnuts and chocolate chips to enhance the flavor.
Almond Joy:
This recipe is a play on the popular chocolate bar. Use shredded coconut, crushed almonds, mini chocolate chips and maple syrup.
“This is by far the most delicious breakfast I’ve ever had never thought oatmeal would actually taste so delicious this way, especially cold. I can’t wait for more easy, quick recipes. My most 2 favorites are the *Banana Nutella* and *Almond Joy*” – Zenny B.
Maple Brown Sugar
Maple brown sugar has got to be one of the most loved oatmeal flavors of all time! The hint of molasses paired with the earthy maple and cinnamon is so good! You can eat this variation hot or cold and any time of the year!
Blueberry Lemon Muffin
Fresh blueberries with tangy lemon zest and floral honey…need I say more? So good, and it just feels like Spring in a bite. I like this one cold, but you could set it out for 15-20 minutes to take some of the chill off the oats or even microwave it to let the blueberries burst.
Tips for making the best overnight oats
- Make it inside of a jar or a mason jar (with measurement lines on the side). This way you can measure, mix, chill, carry and eat the overnight oats all in one convenient container.
- Use plain old fashioned rolled oats, not quick oats. Quick oats will get too soggy when soaked with milk. And do not use steel cut oats because they won’t soften enough to eat just with milk unfortunately. Try this steel cut overnight oatmeal instead.
- Warm it up if you prefer warm oats in the morning. Although overnight oatmeal is typically served cold, you can definitely eat them warm. Just place them in the microwave for one minute and be sure to use a microwave-safe jar.
- Make a bunch for the week. Because overnight oats typically stay good in the fridge for up to 5 days, try making a batch on Sunday and having it on hand in the fridge for the whole week. Be careful if you’re adding fruit beforehand because they will typically not remain fresh for more than a couple days.
- Be mindful of the milk-to-oats ratio. Too much liquid and you’ll have a runny mess; too little and it’ll be too thick. The ideal ratio is usually 1:1, but you can adjust depending on your texture preference.
- Layer, don’t mix, add-ins. If you’re using fruits, nuts, or syrups, layer them rather than mixing. This helps maintain the texture of the ingredients until you’re ready to eat.
- Chill for at least 4 hours. While two hours might do in a pinch, a longer soak will give the flavors time to meld together better, making for a more delicious breakfast.
- Temperature matters. Cold milk will take longer to soak into the oats than room-temperature milk. If you’re short on time, consider using milk that’s closer to room temperature.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, you can warm them in a microwave-safe bowl for about 60-90 seconds if you prefer your oats warm. Be cautious as the jar or container itself may become very hot.
For a creamier texture, you can increase the amount of Greek yogurt or try using a milk with higher fat content.
If your oats haven’t softened after soaking, try extending the soak time. Alternatively, the type of oats you’re using may require cooking; double-check that you’re using rolled oats.
If your oats turn out too thick, the ratio of liquid to oats may be off. Try adding a little more milk and giving it a good stir before eating.
Nope you can just throw them in as is. If you want to dry roast them you can to add a more robust flavor.
You can use any flavor you’d like and that is actually a great way to add some flavor without using one of the recipe ideas above.
You can for sure make overnight oats in a large container. I like to portion it out to stay within the serving size, but that is really the only reason why – oh and to make the different flavors and vary the add-ins.
Depending on what toppings you’re using (if they will oxidize like bananas before the morning), you can add them in immediately after mixing your base recipe together.

These all look delicious! I’ve tried them, and they’re amazing!
Yay! So happy you like them!!
Great work, detailed information. Your content is helpful
So happy you found the recipe helpful! Thanks, Roshan!!
I’m just curious if you heat the recipe up in the morning? I was under the impression that oats weren’t to be eaten raw. Thanks!
You can heat them up for 60-90 seconds in the microwave but I eat them cold! Oats can be eaten raw, soaking them in water or milk makes them easier to digest. Hope that helps!!
Thanks! 💕
This has been my go-to recipe since last year! My fave toppings are the pb&j and banana Nutella. 😋
Yay, love that! So glad to hear you love the recipe, thank you!!
Those all are so yummy, I have tried peanut butter and jelly one …. So good… I used the soy milk so protein will increase, how do I add protein to your nutrition that you have calculated? Thank you in advanced!!
So glad you liked it, Nikita! This recipe has a lot of different possible combinations. You will have to individually add up the grams of protein for each ingredient to calculate the total amount. Sorry I can’t be more helpful!
I just finished eating the maple and brown sugar kind (I didn’t have yogurt, though) and I am fairly pleased with the outcome! Can’t wait to try more. Thanks for this!
Aww, glad to hear that! Thank you so much!!
Hi! Thank you for this recipe. I want to try it! It sounds delicious. Could we have the quantities in grams too? I always use a scale to weigh my ingredients. Thank you so much!
Unfortunately, my website doesn’t have the ability to convert measurements into grams. So sorry!
I’m curious, do you add the add-ins if you want and the other flavors you suggest are toppings? Thank you!
Yes, that’s exactly right! I like to mix in the add-ins and choose different flavor combos for toppings depending on what sounds best that day. Hope that helps!
This is exactly what I need thank you so very much.
Yay, I’m so glad!! Thank you!
Absolutely delicious and so easy! Thank you for sharing!!
So happy you liked it, Tammy!
AMAZINNNGGGGG loved the apple pie option
Yay, I’m so glad you loved it!! Thank you!
Easy to prepare and so creamy! Perfect quantity per serve. Love all the flavour options. Can definitely see why there are so many 5 star reviews, including mine 🙂
Aww, thank you!! So glad you love the recipe!
Hi can you clarify ‘cups’ into grams please? I used google which says 250g so half is 125g but my rolled oats r coming out at 375 calories!! This can’t be right can it?
Hi Laura, I don’t have the ability to convert cups to grams on my site. That nutrition information sounds off though, 1/2 cup of rolled oats is approximately 140 calories. I wish I could be more helpful, so sorry!
1 cup is 90g
Thanks for the recipe! I love it and made it many many times already! Also sharing these with friends! Highly recommended ❤👍🏻
Yay! Thank you so much, Rika, I’m so happy you love it!!
Never heard of you prior. Googled overnight oats recipe and came across yours and gave it a shot. I put the add ins with the base before putting in fridge overnight. My husband said “delicious is an understatement!” Made it again last night and used kefir instead of milk and it’s just as great! Thank you for a great recipe!!
Aww, thank you so much! So glad you and your husband like it!!
A friend sent me these recipes. I’m very excited to try out the many versions. Thank you for sharing. ❤️
Aww, I hope you like them!
Can non-fat Greek yogurt be added to each of these recipes?
Yes! It can be added to the oat base for any of the flavor combos.
Love all your recipes! Going to try the maple brown and blueberry next, but, you call for a pinch of salt. Which salt type do you use? Is it kosher?
I like using Maldon Sea Salt Flakes as a topping! It’s a great kosher option.
This recipe is fantastic! I love how easy it is to prepare and how delicious it tastes.
Aww, thank you! So happy you like it!
Can these be made with protein shakes as the liquid?
Do you mean using a protein shake instead of milk? I don’t see why not!
Oh so tasty. I make these for myself and my husband every weekday.
Love that! So glad you like the recipe, Janet!
I’ve been using this recipe for a while now. A serving would be equal to what (how many cups)? I’ve shared this with a friend and my sister and they both love it!
So glad you like the recipe, Lyn! Depending on the toppings and add-ins you choose, 1 serving should end up being about 1.5 cups. Hope that helps!
My family loves these overnight oats! My kids love the Almond Joy and Apple pie. But my favorite is the blueberry lemon muffin. Thank you so much! These are delicious and so easy to make.
Aww, I love that you all have your favorite flavors! That’s so sweet, thank you for sharing!!
Lovely recipe, thank you. Could you tell me what milk you used, as this affects the nutritional information?
Hi Nicola, the nutrition facts are calculated using whole milk. Hope that helps!
Do you add the chia seeds pre-soaked or dry?
Dry! I add them straight from the container.
When do you add the “add-ins”?
You can add the add-ins (chia seeds, Greek yogurt, honey, etc.) to your base before leaving them in the fridge overnight. Toppings are best added in the morning before eating but you can also put them on top of your base the night before if you need to quickly grab them and go in the morning. Hope that helps!
Maple Brown Sugar overnight oats was delicious!!! I enjoyed eating for breakfast this morning!! Will try other overnight oats recipes.
Yay, I’m so happy you liked it! Thank you, Lisa!!
Your have some great add-in ideas, I can’t wait to go to the grocery store!!
Yay, so happy you feel inspired! Enjoy!!
Can you substitute oats for oat flour?
Hi Kristine, oat flour isn’t going to give you the same consistency. I would only use rolled oats for this recipe to create the right texture!
These are a perfect easy breakfast. I subbed light agave for the honey which also works really well!
Yum, sounds so good! Thanks, Amy!!
Easy to prepare in bulk so I don’t have to spend the time in the morning. I like to use peanut powder to add flavor and drop bananas on top. I bought a half dozen small glass containers with lids so I can set it up Sunday night then I’m set for the work week.
I love that you meal prep your overnight oats, so smart. Peanut powder and banana sounds yummy!
I’ve been wanting to do this but worried they wouldn’t last the whole week. Are they usually ok? My little one enjoys it too now and slimming down the recipe for his kids killer jar is a faff every night so if I could pre-prep for a few nights, that would save me so much time!
Made overnight oats. It was great! Want more!!
Yay! So happy you loved them, Jacqueline!!
Good morning, Yumna 🌞. How are you? I’m fine. Today I tried maple brown sugar overnight oats that I made. WOW 😲! It turned out very delicious 😋, well-flavored, healthy, aromatic, irresistible 😁, and heavenly 😇. I loved it 🥰.
Thank you for your kind words, Ana!! So happy you loved the maple brown sugar overnight oats!
I tried making this last night. This morning, the oats were soft but the chia seeds did not expand.
Oh bummer! Is it possible your chia seeds were expired? If not, there may not have been enough liquid to help them expand. You can add a little more milk next time, and be sure to mix them really well!
You can now find 3-minute steel cut oats, and they will work with this recipe. I used those, a pinch of salt, some cinnamon and sweetener, and they were good.
Great tip, Dawn! Thanks so much for sharing. I’m glad you liked the recipe!
So yummy and filling. A feel-good meal that stays with you through the morning and early afternoon. Love the varieties.
Thanks so much, Cathy! Glad you like them!
Fantastic recipes. Easy to follow info. Thank you.
You’re welcome, Susan! So happy you’re enjoying my recipes.
I have never been a fan of oatmeal but decided to give these overnight oats a try and they were DELICIOUS! I like making the peanut butter and jelly kind but even the plain overnight oats taste great! Even my 6yo daughter loved them too and has requested them for her breakfasts in the morning. I love the simplicity of them, that I can make them the night before, how filling they are, and that they actually taste good! Thank you so much for the recipe!
Amazing, I’m so happy you find them easy to make! Love that both you and your daughter enjoy them, too!!
I made this last night for the first time and it is delicious and so filling! I’m not a fan of Greek yogurt (or any yogurt really), but I decided to give it a try and it blends so well with the milk and oats. I tried the almond joy and absolutely loved it! The apple pie is next on my list. Thank you for the great recipe!
Aww, that makes me so happy to hear! You’re welcome, Marcie!!
Using this recipe for years, tastes amazing and has helped me to lose quite a lot of weight.
That’s amazing!! Thanks, Oliver!
Tasty oats
Thanks, Christy!
Instead of using milk and yogurt, can I use kefir?
Absolutely, that sounds delicious!! (And what a great way to add more probiotics to your breakfast!)
I just want to make sure…. So if I’m doing one of the other flavors do I not do the honey and yogurt list of mix ins? Only the oats and milk and then whatever flavor mix in I am choosing?
Great question, Michelle! I like mixing my add-ins (Greek yogurt, chia seeds, honey, and vanilla extract) into the 2-ingredient base (oats and milk) and letting it sit in the fridge overnight. You can also skip those add-ins and keep the base simple, if you’d like. Finally, I add one of the flavor combinations as toppings at night or in the morning. I recommend you try it different ways and adjust to your preferences! Hope you enjoy!!
This is soooooo yum! I am addicted. I’ve been wanting a really good overnight oats and I can say THIS is the one 😍😍😍
Yay! That makes me so happy to hear!! Glad you love it, Susan!
I would like to try it. I wonder if ‘Instant Rolled Oats’ would work? I have some already in my cupboard. Thanks
Regular, old-fashioned rolled oats hold their texture best for overnight oats. You can use instant rolled oats, but they might end up mushy!
Just made it last night. Delicious! Even my husband thought they were good. Very filling too! I will make it again and try different variations. Thanks Yumna. It was very Yummy!
Aww I’m so happy to hear you and your husband both enjoyed it!! Thank you!
I can’t wait to try the different variations. I would like to make mine with Greek yogurt, but I can’t find a reference for the milk, oat, yogurt ratio.
Hi Kathleen! You can use a 2:2:1 ratio for oats, milk, and Greek yogurt (ex: 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup milk, and 1/4 cup yogurt).
Made this recipe and it was so good!! 😋
Thanks so much!
Planning to prep it tonight. Looks delicious, but debating which additives to go for. I also like the fun background music!
Thank you! I think you can’t go wrong with the add-ins. The more the merrier!
This overnight oats are very good. I like mine cooked, so I put them in the oven overnight at 210 F. I put the oats in a camembert dish with a lid, putting foil between the lid and the container. It produces a very creamy oatmeal.
I have an oven very well insulated, once warmed up, it barely uses any electricity to keep it’s temperature (I checked with the electric meter).
Happy you enjoyed this recipe!
I have tried numerous overnight oat recipes and honestly thought they were gross. Not this one!! It’s the perfect texture and very yummy. This will be my go to for summer breakfast.
Thanks so much, Luann!
Personally I enjoy this right away, muesli style with a little more bite to it. It is very simple to put together and delicious.
Are they good heated up? I’ve got picky eaters that won’t touch cold oatmeal with a ten-foot pole!
Yes! This is great warmed up!
Do you add your add ins plus the other flavors? Eg. Oats, milk, plus your add ins of yogurt, vanilla, chia, sweetener, plus the apple pie ingredients? Or just the base, your add ins OR the apple pie ingredients? I hope that makes sense!
I add the base, mix ins, and the apple pie ingredients!
I love this recipe! I just do oatmeal and milk in a jar overnight and then when I’m ready to eat I transfer to a bowl warm them up in the microwave then add a bit of cinnamon and raisins. Sooooo easy and delicious!
Yay, love it!
Great recipe, so simple. Thanks!
Is sprouted rolled oats same as rolled oats? I have “One Degree Organics Sprouted Rolled Oats” from Costco
Yes, those will work well!
I’m curious why you said no steel cut oats. Is that a personal preference or something else?
Hi there, I love them but not in this application because they will not soften with this method, they need to be cooked.
Healthy breakfast I love oats and try your recipe by the way your way of explanation is superb
Thanks so much!
Is the recipe really just two ingredients, oats and milk, and will it work like that?
Yes! I have suggested “add ins” to make it more flavorful and full of protein, but you can simply mix oats and milk if you prefer.
I am not a big fan of yogurt, however I’m wondering with all the extra ingredients how much of it I would really taste. And I’m assuming I can’t really substitute out yogurt. But I wanted to see you if there was anything you would recommend just in case.
Hi there! You don’t have to use the yogurt, I just like to include it for extra protein and creaminess. You could also swap it for oat yogurt if you prefer!
Can you make the oats in the morning warmed up in the microwave and not sit all night in fridge?
To get the right texture, they need to sit overnight. But, you can warm them up in the morning before eating them!
Love this! I’m texture sensitive with chia- can I substitute flax? Or is there something else that would work better? Thank you!
Sure, you can omit the chia, or swap for flax. Enjoy!
Are you able to add in protein powder? If yes, when is it added and does it change the ratios of the other ingredients?
I haven’t tried it myself, but I think it could work out well if you first whisked the protein powder into your milk of choice.
Love love love and sooooo good, it is amazing for the time you are in rush and need energy in the morning or as snack 😋 😍
So happy to you enjoyed this recipe!
Maybe I’m missing it, but I wasn’t sure if the add-ins, especially fruit (bananas, berries) go in the mix to overnight, or get added in the morning? (I think I’m confused about whether “add-ins” and “toppings” in the instructions are the same thing.)
Sorry for any confusion here! The ‘add-ins’ are the extra ingredients I add to my base to boost the flavor and protein. These items are optional to include in your base recipe, so they get mixed into the oats and milk in advance. The different variations including berries, bananas, etc. can be added in advance, or right before serving. Either way works.
Thanks!
With “Your Add Ins” is the calories 319 or just oatmeal and milk?
Yes, the base ingredients and my add ins are 319 calories per serving.
Great video instruction and I like that you are quick and to the point. I just made these and popped them in the fridge for the morning. Soooo easy to put together. I can’t wait to try them!
p.s. I don’t find your site difficult to use at all, like someone else commented. I guess I’m used to pop-up commercials.
Thank you so much!
Your nutrition info is way off. You state that the nutrition does not include toppings, so it is just for oats and milk (without specifying which milk fat content). The canned “this is just an estimate” would be acceptable if your info was at least close, but it’s not.
1 cup plain, dry oats = 6g fat, 54g carbs, 10g protein
1 cup milk always has 12g carbs, 8g protein, but 0g fat for skim, 2g fat for 1%, 4g for 2%, and 8g for whole
So based on 2 servings, 1 cup each oats and milk, that would be 6, 8, 10, or 14g fat, 66g carbs, 18g protein
For 1 serving, ½ cup each oats and milk, that would be 3, 4, 5, or 7g fat, 33g carbs, 9g protein.
How you are getting 11g fat, 54g carbs, 17g protein is beyond me. Do your research before posting. Use USDA data or the product labels.
Hi Kyle, I apologize, your comment made me realize that I didn’t explain that the nutrition facts include my add-ins. I updated the recipe to make this clear.
I cannot express to you how incredibly difficult this page is to use, every time you scroll to the recipe some ad pops up higher on the page and moves you from the place you were reading, I have never been more frustrated with a recipe in my life
There are definitely ads on my website, which is how I make income as a content creator providing free recipes, but I’ve found that my setup is actually way less than most free websites. Can you send me a screenshot of what you’re seeing that is preventing you from accessing the recipe card? I’d love to see what you’re talking about so I can make any adjustments needed. Thank you!
Agree—almost impossible to use the site. Sooooooo many pop-ups and ads. To the point that it interrupts scrolling and causes my screen to jump. Great recipe but no thank you—way too much work (was hoping to read comments to see if anyone warms this up).
You can very quickly navigate to the recipe by clicking “jump to recipe” at the top of the page.
Hey, l wanted to know if the calories (378) its for the overnight oats that with the topping or just for the base and your add-ing.
Hi there, the nutrition label does not include any toppings.
I like it Thank-You
So glad to hear!
Sooo…I made a peach cobbler variation. Chef’s kiss!
Over night base +
1/4 C diced peaches
1/4 C Peach yogurt
1 T chopped pecans
1 tsp cinnamon vanilla butter flavoring
1 tsp maple syrup
Currently toying with a pecan pie version!
wow! what an amazing idea!
Hi I am just wondering where you find your flavoring ?
Hi. How is that pecan pie one coming along? Do you have a recipe? 😃
I don’t see an option to print the recipes. Am I somehow missing the print button?
Hi there! If you hover over the thumbnail image on the recipe card, a print icon will pop up so you can print the recipe.
I love love love these!!!
Yay, thank you!
Hey, just wanted to share my (great) experience meal prepping these overnight oats.
My husband and I are on a calorie deficit, so I halved the recipe and made a dozen jars of the base with all of the add-ins. The 8-ounce wide-mouth mason jars were perfect for a half recipe. (By the way, I’d use 16-ounce wide mouth jars for the full recipe.)
I added the topping each morning right before eating, and we tried all six of them. They were all delicious.
For anyone doing CICO, here is an example of the calories for a half recipe with all add-ins (YMMV depending on which brands/varieties you use):
— Base with almond milk (179)
— Base with oat milk (202)
— Toppings – PB&J (120), Blueberry Lemon Muffin (33), Banana Nutella (131), Almond Joy (182), Maple Brown Sugar (40), Apple Pie (56)
Now we’re hooked on these, so I’ll be prepping more today. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for sharing!
Hi. I haven’t made this yet but am going to later this afternoon. I have a question though. My mother in law loves oatmeal and we were talking about these but I am concerned about this being a good idea for her since she has been having issues with her blood pressure dropping too low. Would this help or hurt?
So glad you’re interested in trying the recipe! Unfortunately, I cannot provide any medical advice around my recipes for any conditions. It’s best to check with your doctor about this recipe and the specific ingredients you plan to use. Thank you!
Appreciate you sharing this delightful recipe! 😋 My go-to overnight oat base is exactly this one. I began with the simple two-component recipe and threw in peanut butter and banana (no sweetener) – it’s not only delicious but also gives me a good boost. Thanks for sharing this fantastic recipe; it’s truly amazing!
Thanks so much, this makes me so happy to hear!
I love this recipe! I’m new to overnight oats and this is definitely the best and easiest version I’ve tried. I tend to prefer savory to sweet in the morning so I’m trying to figure out some savory options (or some like sweet/salty combos?) To add a level of difficulty, I’m allergic to nuts so no salty nuts or nut butters. If you have any ideas I would love to hear them!
Thanks so much! What about tahini? Can you have that? That is more savory but adds lots of flavor!
I can do tahnini! I never thought to try that. OK – I’m going to experiment. Thanks so much for the idea!!
Hello, can you tell me what milk you have based the calorie info on….. skimmed, semi skimmed etc? Thank you
It is calculated with regular whole milk.
Thank you for sharing this easy recipe!
I’ve been looking for healthier breakfast options, and these overnight oats are not only nutritious but incredibly tasty too. I appreciate how versatile they are—added some fresh berries and it was a hit!
So happy to hear!
This is by far THE BEST overnight oats recipe I’ve found. Unlike other recipes that result in runny slush or a lack of moisture, the texture of the base mix is perfect.
Better still, the range of options provided to mix things up depending on your preferences, means there’s a favourite for everyone.
PB&J is by far my favourite variation. I also like to do my own “Snickers” version where I swap out Nutella with chocolate protein powder (or cocoa) and Peanut Butter.
I live in a warm climate so I generally forego the more Wintery variations, however, they do make a great dessert on the rare occasion I have them 😋
If you like to wake up and know that breakfast is already made for you (aside from the toppings, which I always add in the morning), then this is the breakfast for you!
Love your variations! Thanks for sharing!
This is my absolute favorite base recipe for overnight oats. The consistency is perfect and I love the balance of sweetness and tang! I also add a pinch of salt.
Yay! So glad to hear!
I’m told that Chia seeds and Oats will help me lose weight.
They do have a lot of fiber which can help you feel fuller for longer!
Hi Yumna, how are you it’s Gp here again you might not remember me from last time, anyway I just wanted to let you know that I love this recipes I hope you have more like this to share. I started with the 2 ingredients base and my add on are peanut butter and banana no sweetener but it’s really good it feels me up. My next one would be the apple pie. Thanks again. Gp
Need link to print these please
Hi there! If you click “jump to recipe” at the top of the page it will bring you directly to the full recipe card at the bottom of the page. There, if you hover over the thumbnail image of the recipe you will see a print icon that you can click on to print out the recipe. Hope this helps!
I wonder if you can use flax instead of chia
Hi there, you could use flax, but the oats won’t be quite as creamy since the chia seeds really thicken the texture up.
I did follow the recipe and added cinnamon. I did not have any chia seeds. I don’t see anyone who cooked theirs the next morning. I am sure it is still good cold. But not as creamy as I would like. I put mine in the microwave until it was the desired consistency. Then, I added whole milk bananas, butter, salt, and maple syrup. Thanks for a great starter recipe 🙂
Sounds great!
Just so delicious 😋…I’ve been eating all week.
Yay! So happy to hear this!
Hi, Thank you for this perfect base recipe for overnight oats, which me and my husband have been enjoying using for the past two weeks; the best we’ve tried so far, and the one we’ll stick with. You call it “healthy-ish” – what can we do to make it healthier, please? …Or just plain old “healthy”?
Thank you so much, Deb! The recipe is pretty healthy as it is, but you can omit the sweetener to make it a tad bit healthier.
Tried these oats, but the rolled oats were a bit hard to chew, how to make them soft? Any tips
How long did you let them sit? Rolled oats do have some chew to them, but it shouldn’t be hard to chew.
More than 18 hours and they were hard
All I did was taste the Peanut Butter and jelly recipe and it already is delicious. I can’t wait to have it in the morning once all the flavors are melded together. Yum. Thank you!
Aww I’m so glad to hear that! The peanut butter and jelly one is my favorite!
Followed the recipe and it wasn’t that great. I was expecting the best I’ve ever had considering this has 5 stars and almost 30k reviews. How strange…
Sorry to hear that you weren’t thrilled with the overnight oats, which variation did you make? This recipe has been published for 6 years now and due to it’s position on Google 30K reviews is not all that strange, but I appreciate the feedback.
I love this recipe one of my favorites
Thank you!!
Really delicious, easy recipe. Always make overnight oats this way now
Thanks so much!
I eat cooked oatmeal often but I’ve never tried the overnight oatmeal. I noticed that you add chia seeds. Is this necessary? I have diverticulitis and unfortunately cannot eat seeds or nuts. Any suggestions for a substitution? Thank you!
Hi Ellen, you can just omit or replace with ground flax (if that is something you can eat).
Actually seeds and nuts are now ReCoMmeNdEd for diverticulitis bc they are high in fiber and have been proven to NoT CaUsE diverticulitis in people who have diverticulosis. New evidence and a whole new world of foods!
You can also grind chia seeds, in the same way as you do flax seeds.
And by the way, I made this last night… it was great. I topped mine with peaches and blueberries. I may try less maple syrup the next time just to make them a little more healthy.
So glad you liked it, Lynn!
Love these. My kids love them too and it’s so easy for them to grab and go! Pretty healthy with a good amount of protein (with peanut butter and Greek yogurt)…win win!
So glad it’s a hit in your house!
These are ok, but I really prefer the method where you boil the oats first and then let them sit in the fridge overnight. These came out too chewy for me and they just feel uncooked (which of course they are, lol).
Have you tried the boiled method? (Boil then let soak in fridge overnight). These are much softer and just like a regular bowl of oatmeal, but with all the goodness of steel cut.
I have! I actually have a recipe for overnight steel cut oats. I do prefer some chew in my oatmeal, it is for sure a personal preference.
Great recipe, my whole family really enjoyed it! Just to note as a type 1 diabetic… replacing maple syrup or honey with mashed/pureed fruit does not make it sugar free as you’ve indicated above. I would encourage all diabetics to check the carbohydrate count for whatever sweetener/fruit you use and adjust your bolus accordingly. Thanks!!
Thank you for the feedback!
I am finally on the overnight oats bandwagon! I’m 63 years old. I’m trying to eat a lot healthier because I have Stage IIIC ovarian cancer and I want to do everything I can to make my body as strong as possible so that I can fight this battle for as long as possible. There is no cure for it at this point.
I came across this recipe and I’ve been making it for the past 5 days or so. It’s delicious and filling. I’m diabetic too, so I use sweeteners that are sugar-free. Blueberries are great in it.
I am so sorry to hear about your ovarian cancer! I’ve heard that an alkaline diet can help fight cancer, food is such a powerful thing. I wish you well and I am glad you are enjoying the overnight oats!
The proportions for the base portion were perfect! thank you!
After doing it once, I started cheating though… I use either a plant-based milk with sugar added + plain yogurt OR a yogurt with sugar + regular milk and skipped the sweetener all together but now this part of my meal prep on sunday night and the hubby and i look forward to an easy breakfast on the go! thanks!
So glad you and your hubby like them!
Hi there, I’m really excited to try this. Can I use steel cut oats? Thanks!
Steel cut oats are a little different, you do need to cook them for a few minutes first. You can find my overnight steel cut oat recipe here: https://feelgoodfoodie.net/recipe/overnight-steel-cut-oats/
I made the PB&J overnight oats and my four year old daughter and I both loved them! Delicious, healthy and so easy! Printing to add to my recipe binder to make again!
So glad she enjoyed them!
Can people with kidney disease eat cold overnight oats?
Hi, Yoe. I would check with your doctor, I am not a liberty to say if it is okay for people with kidney disease.
Absolutely delicious! Best recipe for overnight oats. Put mixed berries on top. Yum!
Thank you so much!
looooooved it my every day breakfast in summer for work
So glad you like it, Kay!
Hi. What size mason jar for individual serving?
Regular, 8oz mason jars work great!
Why does the top part say 1 cup of oats and milk and then the bottom part says half a cup of oats and milk?? It’s not consistent and is confusing.
I am not sure where you are seeing 1 cup of oats and milk, it does say 1 part oats and 1 part milk inside the post, but does not say 1 cup.
It was sooooooooo good! I tried the peanut butter and jelly with my mom, and now it’s the only thing we have for breakfast now! By the way we Brewing America lids so anyone who tries definetly use those!
Thank you so much, Sarah!
I loveeeeee this recipe sooooo much! I bought a set of mason jars especially. I quickly grab a jar and off I go in the morning to work! My favourite topping is banana and Nutella. I’m allergic to peanuts so I sprinkle some sunflower seeds on top instead- super yum! ✨
Thank you so much! I am so glad you like the overnight oats – love the idea of using the sunflower seeds perfect sub for peanuts!
Do we need to dry roast the oats before use?
Great question, Moyna! Nope you can just throw them in as is. If you want to dry roast them you can to add a more robust flavor.
Really good base for overnight oats. In the morning just combine the add ins. We have tried banana and peanut butter and apple and peanut butter using half a banana or half an apple per person, but staying with 1 TBSP peanut butter. Thankyou.
You’re so welcome, Fran! So glad you liked the overnight oats!
This is absolutely delicious! I am currently eating it right now and wow it’s so perfect. I used your base which is delicious by itself, and for my add ins I used strawberries and blueberries and it’s fantastic. Thank you so much!
You’re so welcome! I am glad you are enjoying the overnight oats!
does the yogurt have to be plain? can i use a flavoured or a berry greek yogurt?
Hi Cindy, you can for sure use different flavored yogurt. Hope you enjoy!
I’m wondering if there’s any reason I shouldn’t make this in one large batch instead of individual containers? I’ve only ever seen this recipe portioned out, but not sure why. Thank you!
You can try it in a large container. I like to portion it out to stay within the serving size.
I missed the original boat on overnight oats & find myself finally giving it a whirl! I really enjoyed the Almond Joy spin. I’m trying again for tomorrow but omitting the greek yogurt. I wasn’t a fan of tart oatmeal.
So glad you liked the almond joy spin! Yeah, the tangy yogurt is an acquired taste, you can try some sweetened yogurt or just replace it with a liquid ratio.
Hello,
Do you have the UK measurements for this.
Thanks.
Hi Lizzie, at this time, I do not have a grams converter. I apologize!
Made these a few nights ago! Turned out great. It was my first time trying them. I love oatmeal but realized I am not a big fan of super cold oatmeal (texture). I heated it just to get the chill off and topped it with fresh blueberries, it was perfect! I am making it again this evening for tomorrow, adding a dash of cinnamon! Will continue to try and eat them cold though, it will be a great hot summer brekkie! Thank you for your recipes! ❤️
You’re so welcome! It does take a little getting used to. You can let it sit out 30 or so minutes before you are ready to eat if you want as well to take some of the chill off.
I see the major oatmeal brand now has a quick oats version of steel cut oats that cooks in 3 minutes. I wonder if this sort of makes it equivalent to old fashioned rolled oats in that it can be soaked as it is overnight without cooking and still be tender yet more chewy.
Hmm, that’s an interesting question. I am not sure; I have not seen the quick cook steel cut oats that sounds interesting. I do love the chewiness of steel-cut oats, I do have an overnight steel cut oat recipe but it has to be cooked.. If you try it with the quick-cook steel cut oats please let me know how it turned out!
Do you need to wait the 2 hours before adding the toppings overnight or can you put the toppings immediately on after mixing the base?
Depending on what toppings you’re using (if they will oxidize like bananas before the morning), you can add them in immediately after mixing.
So.. for those of us that have NEVER made on oats.. Do you MIX the toppings in or just layer it all on top (dumb question I’m sure) and if you use yogurt does that layer one top or replace the milk? I’m a little confused, I admit
Great question, Angela! I like to mix the add-ins (Greek yogurt, chia seeds, sweetener, vanilla) with the oats and milk. After stirring, I add the toppings to the top of the mixture. Hope that helps!
I used one of your Easter meals this past Sunday and it was a HIT. I didn’t use the chicken recipe but got two rotisserie chickens at Costo and carved it up. The sides were the carrots and mashed potatoes and asparagus and they were a hit.
I am going to try out you oatmeal overnight recipes. I like oatmeal and i usually use the steel cut ones that take 20 minutes to cook.
Thank You
Joe
Treated myself/a new toy called instagram. Was scrolling, & there you were making ice cream in a jar, shaking it, opening it 2 taste & saying oh its so good. I think i was hooked right then. Since, I’m following, also receiving recipes weekly only bcuz I’m half buried by emails right now. You’re so cute! & we’re almost neighbors! I reside in nw indiana. This is really the armpit of the US i think. Enuf abt me. MI is beautiful. Love your style. Your tomato/feta creation is on top of my wish•2do•list !
Thank you so much, Nancy! I am glad you found me on IG, and can’t wait to hear what you think of my recipes!
Fail safe recipe, delicious every time
Thank you so much, V!
Great Recipe. I leave it out the Chia seeds because I can’t digest seeds.
I add cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix with bananas. Yum
That sounds so good!
Made it last night for this morning and it is wonderful and so easy. Since I’m severely lactose intolerant, I used oat milk and sheep milk yoghurt. Still turned out divine. I added peanut butter and blueberry jam for toppings. So yummy! Thanks for the recipe. It will now be a staple in my life. <3
Oh yum! Love the PB and blueberry topping!
hi i was just wondering and what can you do to if it taste to bitter or to sweet or doesn’t have enough flavor to it? and how many hours should it be left in the fridge for?
You will want to leave it in the fridge for at least 4 hours. You can adjust the taste based on how much sweetener you use or the type of oats you make. If you feel like it needs more flavor, add more of whatever ingredient you’d like. Hope you enjoy!
I don’t use a sweetener but add brown sugar when serving. Yum.
I add strawberries.
Thats porridge oats added to my shopping list defo trying these 😋
Thank you
Let me know what you think when you try it! Hope you enjoy!
I have been making these all week and its delicious, I even add my favorite protein powder. These are definitely a staple, thank you for sharing with us!
You’re so welcome, Julie! Glad you like oats!
Do you add protein powder overnight or add like topping before you eat it? Im afraid the protein powder might get clumpy?
Hi Rose, great question. I would add the protein powder to the milk separately and make sure it’s completely dissolved/incorporated, and then add the oats.
I actually add mine in the morning when I’m getting ready to eat it, at night it didnt mix right for me. Hope this helps!
I love this recipe! I was wondering if I could substitute flaxseed instead of chia? Would that change the texture our flavor?
Thank you so much! You can use ground flaxseed in place of the chia seeds. It shouldn’t change the flavor or texture too much! Let me know what you think if you try it!
love this simple receipt and all the topping ideas, Thank you so much
You’re so welcome, Lew!
Looks great, just one, maybe stupid, question – you don’t have to cook it? Didn’t know this…Thank you.
Hi Vanda, this is a great question (not stupid at all!). You do not have to cook it. The oats will soften overnight when it absorbs the liquid making it unnecessary to cook them. Don’t forget to come back and let me know what you think of them when you make it. Enjoy!
Can you please send me weekly info about oatmeal?
Thank you so much for your interest in my oatmeal recipes and tips – we have a fantastic newsletter that I’d love for you to sign up for, that does have oatmeal recipes sent out in it from time to time, but it isn’t oatmeal specific. You can pick and choose what newsletters you would like. It you’re interested, you can sign up here.
Hello! Can you use quick oats and soy milk for this recipe? Thank you!
I don’t recommend using quick oats (although you can). They tend to turn out really mushy. The soy milk is perfectly fine, though! Enjoy!
Hello!
Your overnight oats are amazing! Is the 378 calories for the base or does it include the flavourings?
Thank you so much, Sam! The 378 is for the base recipe only. Anything additional added is not taken into account. Hope you enjoy it!
This is by far the most delicious breakfast I’ve ever had never thought oatmeal would actually taste so delicious this way specially cold. I can’t wait for more easy quick recipes. My most 2 favorites are the *Banana Nutela* and *Almond Joy*
Thank you so much, Zenny! Those two flavors area delicious, I agree!
Well I ‘ve tried lots of overnight recipes before, mostly for my son wich is Gymfreak, but I found yours simple, easy to prepare & delicious. So I think I’m gonna stay here for long.
Thanks & greetings fron Athens Greece & thanks again for honnoring our traditional Greek yogurt..
(plz excuse my English folks, I’m self educated)
Hi Kostas! Thank you for making my recipe! It’s always so nice to hear from people all over the world. (You did a great job with your English!)
Your English is amazing! Better than you probably think it is. 🙂
Also, I must say, I have to credit my goal of getting down to a healthier weight this year to this base recipe and the almond joy. It has seriously kept me from getting off track.
Aw, so happy to hear that, thank you so much! Congratulations on sticking with your goal and crushing it!
Be careful! These are over 100 more calories than is stated, the base overnight oats is 300 on its own!
Some of the addons can almost double the calories in the meal!
it’s stated that there’s 378 cal w out any toppings my guy
Love the overnight oats
Thank you so much, Debra!
Hello!
Would you have any recommendation on how to make this savory? Not a fan of eating anything sweet first thing in the morning.
Thanks in advance
Sure! My first suggestion would be to remove the sweetener and vanilla and then try shredding some vegetables in there like carrots or beets and add some nuts on top. You can also try my savory oatmeal instead…I think you’d love that one!
I made them with blueberries, and coconut…exactly like your recipe and it turned out great! Will try the savory one another day.
Thanks!
You’re so welcome! Glad you enjoyed the sweeter version!
Do u eat cold or can u microwave, this looks great for night shift
Hi Mindee, great question! You can do either! I like oats both hot and cold, so it’s really up to you.
I’m definitely gonna be making my oatmeal this way. So delicious and sweet. I enjoyed every bite.
So glad you like it, Chantelle!
Thanks for the recipe, I tried overnight oats in the past but never really got the taste or texture. Just the base recipe was nice, looking forward to trying out the topping suggestions 👍
Happy to hear that the recipe worked out for you! I love overnight oats; it’s so versatile you can do so much with it!
I just tried this last night w/whole milk, standard vanilla yogurt, vanilla extract, honey, blueberries & lemon zest & my husband loved it. I’m so happy to have found this – thank you!
Oh yum! That sounds sooo good! Thank you for sharing your variation!
This is the best recipe for over night oats I have found, even better one of the simplest and straightforward recipes too. Absolutely delicious. I need look no further for other morning recipes 😊
Aw, thank you so much, Carol. I really appreciate it!
okay, I’m obsessed. I never had overnight oats until these but wanted something easy to ensure I eat after having my 4th baby. I just make the base recipe and it’s soooo good I’ve made it at least 6 times now. Even my kids love it. I am dairy free for my breastfed infant so I use silk next milk and dairy free yogurt.
Hi Nikki, so glad you like the overnight oats! I totally get wanting to have something ready to go in the am, especially with a baby in the house and three other kiddos. We, Moms, need to eat too! lol
This is a great recipe that I use as a blank canvas to flavor many different ways. Today I used Irish oats, oat milk, Siggi’s non fat vanilla yogurt, Penzey’s Pie Spice, and 1/4 cup of homemade vanilla apple sauce, and a touch of maple syrup. The smell alone is making me swoon!! I can hardly wait until tomorrow morning.
Reading that made me swoon! Sounds beyond amazing, and I am jealous! How was it?
It was so amazing. Tasted decadent when in fact it was healthy! How amazing is that? Right at this moment I am making two more jars with the exact same combo, for two breakfasts this week. I’m all aboard on the overnight oats train!
Yay!! I am so glad you liked it, and welcome aboard!
I loved this, i appreciate the versatility for making the recipe and the substitutes I ended up using this made a great dairy free meal. I always appreciate tips when people offer recipes.
So glad you liked it, Jenni!
This was so yummy! I made the mistake of using quick oats, the container said steel cut but I didn’t see the quick cook part. They still came out good but I’m thinking they might get more soggy as the days go on. I made 3..chocolate chip peanut butter banana, strawberry banana and banana walnut with cinnamon! I also used agave instead of honey and almond milk, very tasty!!
Yay! Thank you so much. I am so glad you like the overnight oats. It’s possible to run into texture issues with the quick oats, but even so, they should still be yummy.
SOO good! I can’t remember where I saw this, but adding a little sprinkle of vanilla pudding mix into this overnight is adds some extra flavor as well! I’ve never liked oatmeal before this!
Thank you!! I am so happy to have helped bring you to the oatmeal side… lol Great tip with the pudding mix!
This was my first time making overnight oats and they turned out great. I made the almond joy version without the chocolate. I love the simple prep for this recipe. It takes 2 minutes! I’m looking forward to experimenting with other flavours and topping now that I know how to make the perfect base.
Yay! I am so glad to hear that they turned out great! It’s such a great, easy meal-prep option for breakfast you really can’t go wrong with overnight oats.
Just made this recipe today. Absolutely delicious 🤤 I used chaboni zero sugar yogurt and lakanto sweetener as substitute for the syrup. Not surprised this had all five stars reviews
Yay! I am so glad you liked it!
Do I have to put yogurt or is milk okay alone?
The yogurt is optional! It gives the oats a tangy flavor, creamy texture and boost of protein.
Hi, I’m making for my athlete daughter.
Can I sub flax seed for the chia seeds, or would that not work well soaking overnight?
Also, I’ve read (somewhere) to add toppings in the AM instead of soaking all night. Do you agree?
Thanks!
You can definitely do that! I think it comes down to preference for the toppings. If you don’t want the topping to get soggy, definitely add it when you’re ready to eat.
LITERALLY THE BEST!!!!! This is the best recipe ive EVER used. Absolutely delicious every single time. Perfect consistency, and tastes SO GOOD.
I always make the mistake of not bookmarking this recipe and then I regret it a few days later when I want to make it again and cant find it thus ending up following another recipe that results in horrible oats…
Nothing can top this recipe! I make it so often. I don’t think words could describe how delicious these are and how much I love them!!!!!!!
Thank you so much!!! I am so happy to hear that. Definitely bookmark this one – you won’t regret it!
Hi – we are new to oats. Why are you suggesting not to use steel cut oats ? I thought they are the best kind to use.
For this recipe, do not use steel cut oats. They won’t soften enough to eat just with milk unfortunately.
The absolute best recipe for overnight oats (and I have tried so many) the taste and texture is so good. Love the options you give for flavors. So filling, delicious and healthy! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I am so happy to hear that!
Been doing overnight oats for a long time.
In addition to this recipe, I also use powdered collagen, flaxseed meal and a PB peanut butter powder, with a touch more almond milk.
Turns out real well
Those sound like such nutritious add ins! Yum!
Thank you so much for posting this recipe. This has been my go to breakfast meal prep for a couple of months now. The only thing I changed is I use 2 tablespoons of chia seeds instead of one as I like mine to have a thicker consistency. I add fruit, a little muesli and some nut butter and I look forward to it every day. I have shared this with so many people. Thanks again.
You are welcome! I am so happy to hear that. This recipe is super versatile in that way. I love those toppings!
This was my first attempt at overnight oats and the first recipe I looked at, I love the ratios for the base! For toppings I tried banana, chunky peanut butter and chopped up Trader Joes chocolate chunks. I had good luck mixing the base before adding the toppings and mixing in.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the ratios! Such a yummy combo of toppings.
Wow. Thanks a lot for your great ideas.
For the past few weeks, I just cut a banana into small thin pieces, then I pour some oats on it, then add some honey on top of the oats and finally soak everything into milk. I leave it into the fridge for the whole night.
The whole preparation takes around 2 minutes 😛
This has been the perfect/consistent breakfast for me. I feel energetic during whole morning. I am fitter than ever 😀
Next week, Insha’Allah, I’ll buy some chia seeds and Greek yogurt to experiment. Thanks again and God bless!
Always happy to share! That combination sounds delicious. I love how quick and easy it is to make! Hope you enjoy it with Greek yogurt too!
Too many ads. Can barely see my screen. I am not anti-ad but the amount of ads on this website is ridiculous and takes up over half my screen on mobile. Leaving this comment in hopes website owner tones it down a little. Very annoyed
Thank you for your feedback. I will take that into consideration whenever updating my website!
Thank you for sharing, easiest recipe I’ve found with pics and without forcing me to watch videos… Also, for sharing how long can hold for in fridge and variations for adults, kids and gluten free
You’re so welcome! I’m so glad you found this easy to make and versatile!
So tasty!!
Thank you so much!
This helped me soooo much. I made it a few times for work and it just never tasted right. I couldn’t figure it out. I was using quick oats🤦🏽♀️. Thank you for all the variations also. I was so tired of sliced strawberries and agave I was about to give up on this breakfast altogether.
That makes me so happy to hear! Glad you figured it out and are enjoying the different variations!
Awesome recipe! I prefer it warm on cold mornings but makes a good lunch too. I’ve never been a fan of oats or milk, but I’m totally coverted! The ease of preparation and oh so many add in options keeps it fun! Thanks!!
Thank you! I’m glad this changed your mind about overnight oats.
excellent!
Thank you so much!
Wonderful recipe. I am now addicted. I love coming up with creative add ins. It’s a great grab and go breakfast. Keeps me full, at least till lunch 🙂 Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you! I’m so glad you’re enjoying this recipe. Hope you enjoy the other recipes on my website too!
Not sure I’ll like cold oats. How long would you warm this?
Place them in the microwave for one minute and be sure to use a microwave-safe jar!
My go-to overnight oats recipe. Love the fact that you have the option to increase the portion up to 3x.
I love that! Glad you’re finding that feature on my website helpful!
Omgoshhhhh, I just put one in the fridge! I don’t like yogurt at alllll, so I tried one cup…will let you know in a couple of hours….
Let me know how it turns out for you! Also, next time, you can leave out the yogurt because it is optional.
These look so delicious – I will try them out soon! May I ask where the jars are from? Perfect size and shape for oats – do they come with a lid by chance?
Thank you so much! I can’t wait for you to try it. These cups are now sold out, but here is a similar cup: https://amzn.to/38B0BFF
The BEST overnight oats – I dislike them cold and I’ve been having these every breakfast at work for a month straight. I make a double batch and I keep it cold and it lasts me all week and keeps me super full. My upgrades include sultanas while I’m making them (they go all nice and plump), cinnamon. When I prepare it every day, I mix in strawberries, biscoff spread or stewed apple.
I am so glad to hear it! It’s such a great breakfast to prepare ahead of time. Those toppings and mix ins sound delicious!
Delicious! Highly recommend! I never eats oats and this is the only way I can eat them
Thank you so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying this recipe!
I would like to make enough of the base recipe for a few days worth. If I don’t have a glass container that’s big enough, can I make it in a plastic one?
Yes, you can!
Can you have this warm – how would you heat in the morning – microwave?
Yes, you can! Exactly!
Is the yoghurt a must? Will it not soak if I just use some oat milk?
The yogurt is optional!
Best overnight oats!! I was struggling to find a ‘regular’ breakfast that I like – now I have this 3-4 times a week especially with warmer weather coming and this nicely replaces porridge.
Thank you so much! I love that!
Love this recipe!!!! I used almond milk and coconut yogurt. Love it!!!
Thank you! That’s perfect!
The calories listed for the overnight oats are for which variety? They ate all so different!
The nutrition label does not include any toppings, so it is only for the base.
do you have to use chia seeds
The chia seeds are optional!
Easy preparation, tastes great. Love this recipe for a quick “go to” breakfast.
Thank you, thank you! It’s one of my favorite options, too.
Love this recipe!!!! I used almond milk and coconut yogurt. Love it!!!!
Thank you! Sounds like such a great combo!
Love this recipe; has helped me a lot with my switch to a healthier food lifestyle (rhythm and balance). Also easy to adjust to my taste.
And the multiplier is fantastic!
Thank you so much! That is amazing to hear!
Do you mix the toppings together with the base ? I’m looking to make this for my kids and layering it likely means they’ll eat the top separate from the base !
You can go about it either way! I like to mix some add ins into the base and add some toppings on top.
Do you mix the toppings together with the base ? I’m looking to make this for my kids and layering it likely means they’ll eat the top separate from the base!
You can if you want! I think it depends on what toppings you’re using and how soon you’re going to be eating it.
The rating on this is well deserved. First time for me trying overnight oats. So simple, easy to assemble and tastes great. I’ve had the apple pie and the PB & J one. Will make the others for next week.
Excellent and thank you 👏🏻
Thank you so much! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed! Can’t wait for you to try the other flavors, too.
You can also try this with store-bought yoghurt infused with fruits. I can’t stand the taste of pure yoghurt so I tried it like that and it tastes just as great! I didn’t know the recipe was that easy, thank you!
Yes, for sure! This recipe is super customizable in that way. You’re so welcome!
These overnight oats are delicious! They solidified perfectly and had a great texture. The flavors were intense with the added ingredients and provided a healthy/balanced breakfast. I highly recommend and will be using other recipes on this website.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed. Can’t wait to hear what you think about the other recipes!
Wow! I didn’t know if I was going to be a fan of this, I didn’t really like the idea of cold oats, but this turned out really good! This recipe is tasty, time efficient, and healthy! I decided to use banana and nutella as my toppings and they added a very nice touch to these oats. I was surprised how well the oats soaked. I’m definitely using this as my go to breakfast, thank you!
I’m so happy to hear you decided to give it a try and enjoyed! Those toppings sound delicious. I hope you continue to enjoy it!
I’d had a variant of overnight oats years ago. Thankyou for the inspiration to remake it. I’d forgot how easy, healthy and delicious it could be
You’re so welcome!!
Can you make this without the Chia Seeds?
Yes! The chia seeds in this recipe are optional.
Wonderful
Thank you!
Can’t wait to try these recipes. They look great! Just curious, would an 8oz mason jar fit a serving, or would I need something larger? 🙂
Hope you enjoy! Yes, that should be fine.
I wondered about the size of my Mason jar too. I bought 2 Ball Mason jars in 16 oz
size with the screw-on type plastic covers from Amazon. Tried the base recipe
last night and the 16 oz. jar worked perfectly. I had plenty of room to add the
topping this morning. Yum!
This is so helpful! Thank you!
Impressively perfectly soaked!
That’s perfect! Yay!!
Perfect method using ratios!
Yay!!
Prepped my first batch of your recipe last night, and wow, my kids and I loved them! We all used different combinations of toppings this morning (banana and Nutella for one, peanut butter and berries for another, and just berries for me), and we all can’t wait to have them again tomorrow. I used maple syrup last night when I prepped them because I really wanted to like them, but now I know that for us the added sweetener was not necessary.
Thanks so much for putting your recipe out there for us to find! Just forwarded it to my adult son as well. Such a great option for anyone pressed for time in the morning because of work or school.
I agree with the person who commented that these overnight oats have changed their life. I have to agree…these are a total game changer!! Thanks again!
That is so great to hear! Hope you enjoy all the fun combinations. You’re so welcome!
First time trying overnight oats, tried blueberries and strawberry jam and fresh strawberries on one delicious can’t wait to try again and play around with toppings
Yay!! Hope you enjoy the other ones too!
Hi! Can I use ground flax instead of chia seeds? Or would that give it a different flavor?
You can, but the texture might be slightly different!
Honestly, as someone who tried oats and didn’t like them, I was skeptical about these recipes. But, this morning, I had my first jar. I made the peanut butter & jelly.
Honestly, without hyperbole, these weren’t just the best oats I ever had, but one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten.
Honestly, thank you so much for these recipes. They are wonderful.
You’ve just changed breakfast for me, forever.
That is the best compliment I could’ve received! Thank you!!
Hello! I’d love to try this! Can you tell me if the Greek yogurt in the base is plain or vanilla?
Thank you!
I used plain, but you can also use vanilla!
These are DELICIOUS! I added a tsp of sugar free vanilla pudding to mine. I am in love with this ingenious idea!
Thank you so much! That sounds delicious!
First time eating overnight oats the other day and loved it. Thanks for sharing how to make it – they all look delicious and I can’t wait to try them!
I’m so glad to hear it! Hope you enjoy the variety of flavors!
First time making overnight oats and they are delish! I cut the recipe in half because I only needed 2 oz of carbs so I only used 1/4 cup and I used Silk Zero Sugar Oat Milk. It was very satisfying and almost like a dessert!
So glad you enjoyed the recipe! Yay!!
I’ve tried overnights oats before but wasn’t too keen. Came across this recipe and thought I’d try again – loved it 😀 I made the base recipe (no vanilla) and added ground pumpkin seeds and chopped strawberries. This made a healthy breakfast for me but also a healthy breakfast for my dogs too. Thank you.
That’s amazing! Those toppings sound perfect. Hope you continue to enjoy it!
Tried the Nutella banana overnight oats and I can safely say it’s one of the best I’ve ever had! I’m obsessed 😍 thank you so much! Do you have any other topping ideas? Would love to know more!!!
That makes me so happy to hear! Yay! Did you try any of the other topping recommendations in this post?
I made one serving of your “Easy Overnight Oats” — very, very good! I even used plain yogurt (avoiding sugar) and I still thought it was very good. Thank you for a healthy recipe idea.
That’s amazing! You’re so welcome!
My all time favorite overnight oats recipe!
That makes me so happy to hear!
This recipe is so good. I have had so many people ask me for the recipe.
Thank you! Glad you’re all enjoying it!
Turned out amazing!
That’s perfect!
Hi,
Recipe looks lovely, can I check that the basic amount stated in your article is for one portion, and we increase it for the amount of days required?
Thank you
Thank you so much! Yes, the recipe is for one portion, and you can increase it accordingly.
Very useful
Hope you enjoyed!
very good recipes
Thank you so much!
Hi! Thank you so much for the recipe! Definitely will try this because i’d have busy morning everyday so this would be perfect for my breakfast!
Anyway may i ask something? As i never make an overnight oats before, let’s say if i make bunch of them on sunday to consume them at weekdays, should i eat them immediately after i take them out of fridge or can i bring the jar to my office instead? (it took me approx 1.5 hour from home to work)
Once again, thank you and have a great day!!
You’re so welcome! Can’t wait for you to give it a go. It should be fine on the way to work, but I’d probably keep an ice pack with it.
Ahh, i see! Thank you for the answer, you’re so helpful, i hope you have a very great day! ^^
As a UPS driver this would be a great lunch idea as well, thanks for clarifying putting them on ice to make them last.
Yes, for sure! Hope you enjoy!
Can you use coconut milk as a substitute
Yes, you can use coconut milk instead of milk in this recipe!
Absolutely loved these recipes. So easy to follow with clear measurements and alternative options. Breakfasts, sorted. Thank you.
Thank you so much! That makes me so happy to hear!
ITS SO SO GOOD TOTALLY RECOMMEND 💯 MY FAMILY LOVES IT ITS HEALTHY LIGHT FILLING AND CUSTOMIZABLE U NEED TO DO THIS ASAP 💗💗💗💗
Thank you so much! I love that you all enjoyed it!
The best overnight oats I’ve ever eaten. My 1 year old is also obsessed he eats the whole jar.
Thank you so much! That’s amazing!
I made this last night and it was so good! I added in 1 grated apple to the oat and chia mix in place of sweetener and it worked out great. I added berries in the morning but I’m definitely going to try the different recipe toppings! So easy and healthy! Love it!
Thank you! That sounds delicious. Hope you continue to enjoy!
Excited to try this recipe and give overnight oats another try! What size of mason jar would work best? Thanks!
Excited for you to give it a try! I would use a half pin or pint mason jar (depending on how many toppings you add).
I love these. It’s been my go to meal. And the different options. So far I love the Banana Nuttela, but I’m planning on trying the other two pb&j and the apple crisps.
Yay! That’s amazing to hear. Excited for you to try the other flavors!
My go to meal 3 to 4 days a week! The endless topping options! The convenience! Love, love this recipe! Peanut butter and jelly is my absolute favorite!
I love that! It’s so versatile and such a staple.
Would it be a problem if i didn’t add chia seeds? Should i be adjusting the liquid content?
The chia seeds are optional! You can completely omit it without adjusting the amounts of the other ingredients in the recipe.
I eat these recipe almost every morning I love it. I use almond milk unsweetened. Thank you
That’s amazing! So glad you’re loving this recipe. You’re so welcome!
I would also like to add protein powder . Can you recommend how much to add and when
I would add the protein powder in the first step. You could add a few tablespoons!
I would like to make it with Steel Cut Oats. Is there a specific method you recommend
I do not recommend using steel cut oats for this recipe.
Awesome recipes!! Thank you 😊
You’re so welcome!
Hi Yumna , I tried your overnight oats recipe , I am in love with it. I am on a weight loss journey and I keep looking for yummy and healthy food. This now is going to be on my meal plans for coming months 😋
I am going to buy beautiful little Mason jar for making these oats because this recipe deserves to look beautiful 😍
That makes me so happy to hear! Hope you continue to enjoy! I love that idea.
Thanks for sharing. I loved it as written. I did the Almond joy version and man was it delicious.
I like the fact that I stay full longer. And that breakfast for the week is already prepared.
You’re so welcome! Glad you enjoyed it and found it to be a satisfying breakfast!
Hi Yumna!! Your overnight oatmeal recipe sounds yummy, can’t wait to get started later today. Yet, can you please let me know – would it work if I doubled your above basic overnight recipe and place all the ingredients into 1 mason jar and store it into the fridge overnight? Many thanks again!!!
Thank you! Yes, it will work.
When making the other ones (like peanut butter jelly) do you still need the yogurt from the base recipe, or would you sub that for the peanut butter?
I LOVED the base recipe and can’t wait to try the others!
Thank you! 🙂
You can leave the yogurt in the base recipe or omit it because it’s optional. I would add the peanut butter top and not in place of the yogurt.
Looks deliciouss!! Is there anyway that i can sub the yoghurt for something else?
Thank you! The yogurt it optional, so you can omit it.
Thank you for this recipe! I’ve tried several others out already, and the end result so far was less than desired. But the one I made based on your instructions is exactly what I wanted out of my overnight oats, so once again thank you, I will be using this from now on 🙂
You’re so welcome! So glad you enjoyed this one!
Will the recipe work with water as opposed to milk.
Yes, it will!
This recipe is so great! I tried the Apple Pie and it was so yummy and filling! I toasted my pecan and it definitely added great flavor to my oat. Thanks for sharing this and I can’t wait to try other flavors!
Thank you! That’s amazing!!
I’m excited to try this!! For any of the flavor combos, do you add those ingredients the night before and let it soak or that gets added the next morning once it’s ready to eat?
Can’t wait to hear what you think! You can honestly go about it either way. Toppings can be added the night before or immediately before serving!
But which way is better and do you recommend? 😊
It’s easier to add the toppings the night before! However, if you strongly prioritize having really fresh fruits, I would add it the morning of.
Do the bananas or apples brown if you do it the night before? Maybe a salt water rinse can prevent that?
Depends how long you store it for! You can also add the toppings when you go to serve the dish, so it doesn’t brown at all that way.
Oh my gosh, amazing!! Thank you! I have tried sooooooo many overnight oats recipes and I thought I hated overnight oats. But then I saw yours, and decided to give oats one more go. Oh my gosh I’m addicted!! Wow wow wow. Thank you, I love them cold but like you suggested, some days, I pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds, the chocolate chips slightly melt and it’s absolutely divine. I am LOVING your recipes, thanks so much.
Thank you! So glad you gave it a try and enjoyed!!
Great base recipe for overnight oats! I sub flax or hemp milk and this helps my husband hit his omega 3 requirements (82% of his doctor recommended amount). We add banana, fresh or frozen fruit depending on what we have on hand/flavor we want. Delicious, easy to grab and go breakfast.
Thank you so much! That’s amazing!
Such a simple and wonderful recipe. I use kefir instead of the yogurt, 1 tbs of shredded coconut, a full tsp of vanilla and 1 tsp of sugar free coffee syrup of whatever I am craving (usually hazelnut). A healthy and satisfying breakfast! Thanks for the recipe!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed!!
Love, love, love this recipe! Even my husband who is not a fan of oats loves it and asks for it on a regular basis. I love the base with just some berries but I have yet to try the other combinations. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! That’s amazing to hear! Hope you enjoyed the other combinations too. You’re so welcome!
These is the best recipe for overnight oats I’ve made yet. Add some blueberries and grated apple – yummy!
Thank you so much! Love those additions!
It was the first time I tried overnight oats and feel lucky that I found your base recipe, it tastes great. Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed! You’re so welcome!
Super easy, healthy, and yummy
Tried many combinations but my go-to version is soaking couple of dates with it to give it the perfect sweetness…topped with nuts and bananas
Even my 2-year old is now a fan!! Cant ask for more!!
Thank you so much !!
Thank you so much! Love the sound of that. So glad you both enjoy this recipe!
I made this today and what a hit!! The kids loved it and so did we!
It’s easy, and healthy and very tasty!
I made the Nutella version topped with blueberries, raspberries and chocolate chips!
Will definitely make other flavors, thanks Yumna
That’s amazing! Hope you enjoy the other flavors too!
This has officially become my favorite breakfast! I’m focusing on protein so I’ll heat it up in the morning and add some protein powder. So good!!
I love that so much! That’s a great idea!
Hi,
Tagging along here…I’m also trying to get a bit more healthy. Can you share at what stage you add the protein powder? and how much? Thanks 😊
I love this! At the moment, I’m lacking the proper fruits (sadly, it’s winter) or ingredients to do the fancy flavours, so I just eat the base. I love how I can just take ~8m and have a meal ready for tomorrow! I can already Invision a couple more flavours I can make using the base… I just need to get the ingredients! Thank you for this easy to follow recipe. It fills you up quite a lot, in fact, I never get to finish it in one sitting!
Thank you! It really is that easy. Hope you continue to enjoy as you experiment with different flavors!
This is the best you can make it your own, the sky is the limit. Why did I not know this 40 yrs ago?
Right?! Love the ease and versatility!
Amazing! Love that you can prepare the night before. It saves you a lot of time in the morning and not having to worry about what’s for breakfast!
Same here! Exactly why it’s great for meal prep.
I love this recipe! I never thought of adding yogurt to overnight oats but now I’ll never go back! Can I ask where you got those gorgeous jars?
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it! I got it from Lucky Brand: https://rstyle.me/+_YTwEb54uYuuNUB4aA3pIQ
Can I use mashed banana in the base recipe? Also do you recommend this to be served cold or warm? Thanks!!
Yes, you can add mashed banana to this! Although overnight oatmeal is typically served cold, you can definitely eat them warm. Just place them in the microwave for one minute and be sure to use a microwave-safe jar.
I love all the variations you showed! Almond Joy sounds amazing, I’m going to try that tonight!
Variety is key! Hope you enjoy!!
Nice healthy alternative to powder drinks! Thanks for the protein version!
You’re so welcome!
Hey,
Great recipe!
Is it safe to heat up the overnight oats inside the Mason Jar in the microwave? If so what’s the best way to do this?
Thanks.
Thank you! You can heat up overnight oats in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. However, if you’re going to reheat it in a mason jar, make sure that the mason jar you’re using is microwave safe!
I made one of each flavor. Never had overnight oats before and I really don’t like oatmeal. But these were awesome! I didn’t have any maple syrup so I used Yellow Label syrup instead. I’m sure they would have been even better with the maple syrup flavoring. Thank you for these recipes!
So glad you enjoyed these! You’re so welcome!
Can I use plain yogurt instead of greek?
Yes, you can!
Hi,
I started following you on Instagram. I now receive you emails on recipes and videos everyday.
I love making the overnight oats.
This weekend I made the Banana Choc. Chip Cookies. (Made a double batch)
I gave some to my best friend to bring into work (she works a High School)
They all love them!! She said, tasted better the next day with coffee.
Thank you,
Patti 🙂
Thank you for all of your support! So glad you and your best friend both enjoyed the oats! You’re so welcome!
I’m giving it a try this weekend ! Looks delicious 😋
Yay!! Thank you! Let me know how it goes.
I tried it for the first time and love it.
That makes me so happy! Yay!!
I’ve read that you should soak oats in an acid overnight to break down anti-nutrients for 12-24 hours before using them. Do you have to do that step for overnight oats?
That step shouldn’t be necessary for this recipe.
Thank you so much, fast and easy to make overnight oats. Yumm 😋
You’re so welcome! That’s exactly what I was going for!!
Why will it not let me print out the recipe …when there is an print button to click on???
If you do not wish for someone to print do not add that on the recipe page…smh
Can you share with me what kind of error message you’re getting? Are you trying to do it on a computer or phone? The print function works normally and readers use it all the time. I use it all the time as well.
Tried this for the first time today.
And loved it!
Shall be experimenting with all recipe’s on your post,
I had rhe peanut hutter one this morning, and have emailed your page to,
Several people!
Thank you, love them!👍🌈
Yay! Can’t wait to hear what you think about the other recipes!!
Is this in cal because if it’s really in kcal that means it’s really 378000 cal which wouldn’t make this too healthy.
It’s 387 calories per serving!
This was so helpful and informative and certainly made some really creative suggestions 😊
That’s so great to hear! Glad you found it to be useful in that way!
Love the recipes! Fun and so yummy even for the kiddos!!!
Thank you so much! It really is!
Wow!! First time having overnight oats and it will definitely not be my last! Apple pie is phenomenal.
Yay!! Apple pie always hits the spot!
I love this healthy brakefest. thank’s
You’re welcome! One of my favorites too!
I’ve tried multiple overnight oats recipes- this is the best one. The yoghurt adds a lot! Thank you!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I really like what the yogurt adds too. You’re so welcome!
I altered the base to 1 teaspoon of chia seeds and 1/3 cup milk. This works better for my fiber needs and keeps the consistency/thickness that I like. Great recipe and super easy to adjust!
This recipe is super versatile in that way! Thank you!!
You sure “nailed it” with this recipe and it’s adaptations. It’s a huge “YES” from me!
Love this, used soya vanilla milk. The reason it’s sticky is the chia seeds.
Thank you! The chia seeds do help with the texture!
Excellent way to start your morning! Toppings combinations are awesome and altogether very filling! Love that it lasts in the fridge so you can make them ahead of time ! Thanks so much!
Yes, for sure! I love that! You’re so welcome!
WOW. This is GREAT
THIS IS THE GO TO BREAKFAST AT THIS HOME-COULD ALSO WORK FOR A HUNGRY PERSON IN THE EVENING
THANK YOU
P.S. SOMETIMES IT IS HARD TO FIND : rolled overnight oats-is there something else I can use?
Thank you so much! It really can! I would stick to rolled oats for the consistency.
I use steel-cut oats. They don’t get as soft, but I like their chewy texture. I prefer them to rolled. They need a full 8 hours to soak, though.
Healthy, quick and easy..Thank you.
Exactly what I was going for! You’re so welcome!!
Must try!
Thank you!
Thank you for this recipe! 🙂 can you make this in a normal porcelain bowl as well or does it need to be glass? Thanks!
You’re so welcome! It will work in that bowl as well.
Hey yumna,
This is mario from Beirut, Lebanon.
Thank you for the healthy recipes that you’ve been giving and all the good work.
If possible to know about over night oats;how can i prepare a big batch for the week,so i soak them in water and leave in the fridge for when i need them? Or how does it happen?? What about the toppings?? When are those added?? Thank you very much and keep the fantastic work
Hi! Thank you so much. Because overnight oats typically stay good in the fridge for up to 5 days, I recommend making a batch on Sunday and having it on hand in the fridge for the whole week. Be careful if you’re adding fruit beforehand because they will typically not remain fresh for more than a couple days.
OMG! So good. I used coconut yogurt and added berries in the morning….taste like tapioca pudding.
I love the sound of that! Yay!!
If I leave out the yogurt should I adjust the milk to oats ratio?
No need!
Exquisito y nutritivo
Thank you!
Ramadan mubarak! Just want to say thank you so much for these recipes and suggestions, never tried over night oats before but I’m looking for more filling food and your suggestions are amazing! Have a blessed month and a lovely eid
You’re so welcome! I love that you’re open to trying new things. Thank you so much! Ramadan Mubarak! 💛
Do you have to use a glass jar? How about using the Ziploc Twist ‘N Loc Containers that are 8oz. with Lid which are Leakproof, BPA-free and perfect for on-the-go? Please let me know, thanks.
You definitely can use that instead!
I make the base recipe and add in some frozen berries, and it’s literally so amazing!
Love that! The frozen berries probably thaw easily in there and make everything so refreshing.
I am going to try this, can I make a larger batch in a single glass container instead of individually? Thanks!
Yay! Yes, you can absolutely do that!
Ramadam mubarak! I discovered your blog on Pinterest, with the pin “recipes for Ramadam” and I have already taken note that there is still a lot of Ramadam ahead. I am not traditional at this time of year (nor the rest of the year ha ha ha) and I like to put different dishes every day and I wanted to ask you that I have whole oats, I had always believed that oats had to be cooked. Am I wrong? I am in Spain, I am Spanish and I don’t think I can get another oatmeal, I buy it at the Lidl or Aldi supermarket, the first supermarket in Europe for their quality. If there is any special recipe, my ears plop! they are open ha ha ha
Thanks in advance
Do you know of a chicken soup that is made with lemon and cinnamon? I tried it once, delicious but I have never been able to find the recipe. I would appreciate it if you had it. Take care of yourself a lot 😂😂😂
P. D. Google traductor 🤗🤗
Ramadan Mubarak! That’s correct – the oats don’t need to be cooked, but cooking them can make it easier to digest. Here is a Chicken Noodle Soup you may like: https://feelgoodfoodie.net/recipe/classic-chicken-noodle-soup/
Are you able to use flax seed instead of chia seeds if you don’t have them?
Yes, you can. You can also leave it out, as it’s optional.
Made this last night and was an absolute hit this morning for brekkie!! Thank you so much. Can’t wait to try with different toppings 🙂
Yay!! Feel free to get creative with the toppings!
These were absolutely delicious, loved all of them.
Would love to see more topping ideas if you have them. This is so easy, healthy and very tasty. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I’ll definitely have to keep that in consideration.
Will try making this tonight. I only have flavoured yogurt not greek one. Can I use that? Or is the greek yogurt optional?
Yay! You could definitely use that too.
This was unbelievably easy. I made and ate just the base and thought it was delicious!
It really is! I’m so glad you found it to be that!
Thanks for sharing your recipe of overnight grains. I’m Just beginning to learn to cook and eat at home. I typically buy the overnight grains from Starbucks which contains quinoa is that something I can add?
You’re so welcome! I love that! Yes, I’m pretty sure you can!
I tried this recipe…
Don’t use essence(instead of extract) in the recipe,it tastes acidic …I added few jelly squares, loved it thank you
Delicious! Do you know what the service size is prepared? If I measured correctly, it appears to be about 1.5c but want to confirm. Thanks!
Thank you! It should be around that much! This recipe makes one serving.
Who knew? Overnight oats are simply, simple and absolutely delicious! Such a wonderful way for breakfast without cooking.
I now have a new favorite breakfast. Thank you so much!
Yes, they really are! You’re so welcome!
I’ve never liked oatmeal, but I know it’s a healthy and filling breakfast so I kept trying it. Well, I am done choking down that hot, pasty, tasteless, congealed mass. Because this is SO much better. Has a great flavor and easy to customize based on what you feel like (and what’s in the pantry). I get bored with food easily, but I have no problems having this four days a week. And I love that there’s no rush to make something on busy workday mornings.
I’m so glad you finally found a way to enjoy oatmeal! Yay!!
Hi Yumna
How
Much yogurt fo you add in the recipe above?
Thanks!
¼ cup non-fat Greek yogurt! The oats are optional, but they have a tangy flavor, creamy texture, and boost of protein.
I made this recipe and the serving size looks significantly larger than yours, your pictures look like there are a lot less in the glasses, did you half the recipe or divide it amongst the jars? Is the calorie count based on the complete recipe(1/2C Oats, milk etc?)?
I think the size of my glass could be misleading! The 378 kcal listed for this recipe is for one serving of the recipe (just the base and none of the toppings).
I’m a college student and I often skip breakfast since I’m too lazy to make a proper meal in the morning, being busy and all, but I tried this recipe and it’s a live saver! So tasty, saves a lot of time, and easily customizable. Thank you!
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how easy it is for busy days! Yay!! You’re welcome!
Prepped some last night and had it for breakfast this morning without any toppings. The texture was fantastic and it tastes great! I used 1 tablespoon of brown sugar instead of honey or maple syrup and the sweetness was just right for me. Definitely going to be having this for breakfast more often!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much!
These are sooo good! I didn’t have my hopes high and thought I wouldn’t like it but omg they’re delicious- my 10 y.o. daughter and I both loved it and are excited to prep them for the week!
I’m so glad you still gave it a try! Yay!!
Made these oats followed recipe and really loved them the next morning
I’m so glad to hear it! Thank you, Mary!
Hello! Do you know how many calories this would be if I used a mason jar instead of a glass? And do the calories lessen if you use water instead of milk?
The calories would still be the same if you put the same amount of the overnight oats into the mason jar as you would into the glass. And, yes! If you use water instead of milk, there will be slightly less calories in the recipe.
My husband and I started eating overnight oats as part of a 5 day cleanse. Our naturopath could not be more excited about everything oaty. I do not like oatmeal so I did not have high hopes but this was delicious! I used an almond milk greek yogurt and added pomegranate arils right before eating and it was a taste and texture sensation. Thanks to opening up my breakfast world to overnight oats!
I’m glad you still gave this a try and enjoyed it! Happy to help!!
I’m literally obsessed with this! I top with dark chocolate chips and coconut!
Such a great combo! Thank you!
Can I eat it heated?
Yes, you can! Warm it up if you prefer warm oats in the morning. Although overnight oatmeal is typically served cold, you can definitely eat them warmer. Just place them in the microwave for one minute and be sure to use a microwave-safe jar. I do this for my daughter who hates cold food in the morning!
Would this be okay to maker without the greek yogurt?
Yes, it’s optional, but it gives the oats a tangy flavor, creamy texture, and boost of protein.
What would you say the calories are for these recipes? They look so yummy!
It is 378kcal for one serving without any toppings.
Absolutely delicious. I’ve made this recipe a few times and it always delights. Quick, healthy, and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing.
That makes me so happy to hear! Thank you!
This easy overnight oats recipe is so good. I made the apple pie version and it came out really good. My husband loved it and he even said he can have it for breakfast everyday 🙂 Thank you for this recipe. I plan to try the other variations. I’m doing a 31 days of oatmeal this month so the different variations would fit the challenge 🙂
That’s amazing! I’m so glad you both enjoyed it! Let me know how you enjoy the other ones!
Can I substitute for quick oats?
Make sure to use plain old-fashioned oats and not quick oats because the consistency is best with rolled oats. You can also use gluten-free oats!
This is my first shot with this recipe so I snuck a taste after two hours and it was excellent! In the past I have used agave nectar for a sweetener but I went with maple syrup this time around. On the menu for tomorrow is raisin, date and walnut—a childhood favorite! Another variation I have tried in the past and enjoyed is pumpkin pie (pumpkin pie spice, pumpkin puree and some chopped pecans and pepitas sprinkled on top).
That sounds like such a delicious combo! I’m definitely going to have to try the pumpkin pie one!
Hi,
love your recipes, just a quick question, do you think maybe eventually you could add some topping ideas that are nut-free? also, can i use raspberry greek yogurt?
I’ll definitely have to consider that moving forward! Yes, you could!
Can you warm up these in the microwave before eating?
Yes! Although overnight oatmeal is typically served cold, you can definitely eat them warmer. Just place them in the microwave for one minute and be sure to use a microwave-safe jar. I do this for my daughter who hates cold food in the morning.
Delicious and family approved! Love all of the variations you gave us. I also did one for this week with Pineapple, banana chips, toasted unsweetened coconut chips and chopped walnuts for a tropical flare. My family does want it a bit sweeter, so I use a little maple syrup, Splenda (yes, I use Splenda occasionally) or coconut sugar for a sweeter touch
Thanks so much for sharing your great recipes!!!
I love the sound of that tropical combo! You’re so welcome!
Awwuh, thanks! 😃
Do you think you could subtitute flax seeds, or just remive the seeds altogether?
Yes! You could do either of those options.
Delicious!! Easy to grab and go! Love the many choices!😋
I love that! Thank you!
Hi
can you make this in plastic container with lids so they can be taken to work if so what size container would I need.
Yes, you could! I recommend roughly 16 ounce cups/ containers.
Can normal yogurt be used instead of Greek Yogurt? Or can yogurt be skipped altogether?
Yup! You can use normal yogurt or just skip it!
super easy, loved the PBJ combo! very tasty 🙂 cant wait to try the nutella combo next
One of my favorites! Hope you enjoy!!
Where did you get those glasses that the oatmeal is in? They are so cute!
These are actually cups made by Lucky Brand, but unfortunately they are no longer available.
It’s hard to get fresh fruits in my area during this time. How do I use frozen fruit like strawberries, blueberries etc? I prefer warm oatmeal. Please advise how to thaw and use frozen fruits. Thanks
I would add frozen fruit in instead of fresh fruit as it is, and the next day, just place them in the microwave for one minute and be sure to use a microwave-safe jar.
I really enjoyed these! I added a lil more milk, 3/4 cup. Did anyone calculate the calories for the recipes with toppings? I really would like to know to input into my app that tracks my calories. Thank you!
That’s great, as this recipe can be altered to fit your preferences! I don’t have the exact nutritional information for the toppings because it will vary on how much you use and what type/ brand.
This was my first attempt at overnight oats and I’m hooked! I love how simple and versatile the base recipe is. I get bored eating the same thing all the time, so this will be a great addition to my meal routines!
P.s. I like mine warm, so I wait to add the yogurt and honey after in order to keep the beneficial goodies intact.
Thanks for a great recipe!
I’m glad the first attempt was successful! That’s a great way to enjoy it when warm!
I made these with a couple frozen blueberries in it and some almond milk! It sat overnight for two nights and was delish!
That sounds so good! I’m so glad to hear that!
This is our new go to breakfast! Loave all the variations but the top fave has been brown sugar wth blueberries, and chocolate peanut butter this week. Thanks so much!
Yay! The variety is definitely one of my favorite parts.
I have tried all of these recipes myself and they’re great but my son only likes the chocolate chip one. Can you think of any other combinations for kids that include things like chocolate chips, peanut butter etc…?
For sure! Cocoa powder can be mixed into the base with peanut butter as a topping. You could also switch up the toppings with some bananas or nuts to still retain that sweet and salty flavor.
INSTEAD OF YOGURT, WE ADD THICK CREAM, IT WILL BE MUCH TASTIER
You could most definitely do that to fit your preferences!
If I don’t like yogurt can I omit that?
I added the yogurt because it gives the oats a tangy flavor, creamy texture, and boost of protein. You can omit the yogurt, but I’d add another tablespoon of milk in that case, so it isn’t as dry.
I just threw some together today (Feb. 3rd, 2021.) Mine is strawberries, bananas, and chocolate chips. Instead of using vanilla extract, my non-fat Greek Yogurt was vanilla flavored to get both the yogurt and the vanilla. I can’t wait to try it in the morning
*Feb. 4th
That sounds incredible! Let me know what you think once you get to try it!
This base was way too thick in my opinion. Even thicker than eating oatmeal. I was hoping for more of a creamy texture. I used soy milk and full fat Greek yogurt. I left it in the fridge overnight. What could I do to get that creamy/thinner texture?
Thin with a little more milk or water, if desired!
I just threw some together today (Feb. 4, 2021) and used strawberries, bananas, and chocolate chips. Also, instead of using vanilla extract, my non-fat Greek Yogurt is vanilla flavored to have both the yogurt and the vanilla. (Sorry for commenting a second time, I messed up the date the first time around.) I’m excited to try them tomorrow!
Also try using less chia seeds if it still feels too thick, those little guys get more and more gelatinous and solid the longer they are in liquid.
Never been a fan of oatmeal, but this recipe I grew to love it! I have more energy compared to my breakfast sandwiches and pancakes. It’s also very filling which caused me to lose weight instantly (2 weeks). It’s very flavorful and I like the many options to create a different taste
That’s great! I hope you try all the variations, so you don’t get tired of it!
why the yogurt? Is it needed?
The yogurt gives the oats a tangy flavor, creamy texture, and boost of protein. You could leave out the yogurt, but it will change the texture and taste.
Hi, I’ve been looking for a good over night oats recipe and I think this may be the one! My only question before I make it is how is the texture? Is it really slimy like other recipes or is it more like actual oatmeal?
Hi! I hope you love this one! It’s actually not slimy at all. I think it has the texture of oatmeal especially because the chia seeds absorb a lot of that liquid. Let me know how it works!!
I made it last night and just finished it right now. It was the best over night oats I’ve ever had! I’ve already recommended it to a few friends. I will definitely be making this more often in the future!
Yay, I’m so glad to hear that! Thank you!!
The BEST overnight oats I’ve tried! The best ratios of each item. Love!!! Thank you!!
Thank you so much!
Hello, I think I would like overnight oats better without the yogurt. Is it there solely for the protein boost or is there some other reason it’s important to the basic recipe?
Thank you
Hi! The reason I like to include the yogurt, besides for a protein boost, is because it will also give it a tangy flavor and creamy texture.
I have read that oats contain phytates, which if not neutralized, like through soaking or cooking, interfere with nutrient absorption. And that soaking with a little acid, like yogurt, really helps that process.
That makes me wonder why there are so many no-bake oat cookie/energy ball recipes around!
That’s so fascinating! There definitely might be a correlation between the two.
Love the recipe! I do have a random question: where did you purchase the glasses that are shown in the photos above? I love them!
Thank you, Lisa! These are actually cups made by Lucky Brand, which are no longer available. But they are 16 ounces!
Very delicious! I definitely recommend it! I put in one garlic clove in total otherwise it would have been to garlicky for me!!! I actually made it on the fire when we went camping and it worked so well!
Sorry, this was meant for a lovely pie recipe not Overnight Oats!!!!!
Here are the overnight oats comments:
Very tasty and well flavored! I did the Apple Pie one and i will defiantly do it again! Thanks!
No worries! Thank you so much, Megan!
My family has been enjoying this overnight oats recipe on a regular basis for over a year. Three people prepare 15 serving assembly line style in two cup containers. It is quick, satisfying and filling ❤️ Thank you for posting this!
Love how it is a team effort! Most welcome!
I used GF oats, omitted the yoghurt because I’m using a dollop of vanilla kefir yoghurt on top and then topping with cinnamon and coconut oil fried apples. I didn’t use sweetener but they still turned out excellent. I’m trying to lose a little of the weight I gained over the last year of lockdown so this is an easy and healthy breakfast that will keep me going until my evening meal. Looking forward to adapting my toppings in summer too! Thank you!
Vanilla kefir yogurt sounds like a delicious addition! Thank you!!
Many thanks tips. Tried my 1st overnight oats love it 🥰😋…this is super easy for a lousy cook like me 😅 I’ll try out different topping too.
Most welcome! I’m so glad to hear it. Yes, try the different toppings to keep it interesting!
Thanks for sharing recipe! I have tried making one for a week. But is it normal for it to taste like a bit acidic? The one I have made was soaked with banana. And separately is the one with strawvberry.
Most welcome! It shouldn’t taste acidic, but it may have a tangy flavor if you opted to add yogurt.
I love this recipe! I am a single mom and needed something quick and healthy for me and my baby (EBF). This is so yummy, so quick, filled me up, and I felt good about eating it. There are so many ways to make them so it never gets boring! Thank you for sharing!:)
That’s great! I really love the versatility too. Thank you!
I substituted plain non fat yogurt – not Greek – wondering if it will work out
It definitely should!
I’m a high-school student who’s doing online school right now, so I like waking up as late as I possibly can before school, so I don’t usually have time to prepare breakfast. But your overnight oats recipe is so awesome because it’s SUCH a quick grab & go breakfast. It’s awesome! 🙂
That’s great! Thank you so much!! Hope online school is going well.
How many calories are in the Oat recipe extras? Like the PB and J? Is it 378 or 378 plus the toppings. I estimated 450?
The nutrition value is for one serving without any toppings. The calories added on from the toppings will vary depending on how much of the toppings you add and what brand you use.
Easy to make and love all suggestions for toppings.
I’m glad to hear that! Thank you!
I’ve enjoyed this so much I have shared with friends and co workers 💜
Yay! I love that!! Hope your co-workers enjoy it too.
This is one of my absolute favorite recipes. It’s so delicious and nutritious.
I love that. Thank you so much!
Apple pie is my favorite❤❤❤❤
Delicious👍🏻
I’m so glad! Thank you!!
Came out like day old cereal
Lol, that’s what overnight oats are I guess
Basically what it is. Smh
I’ve been making the almond joy version of this almost religioisly every day, I love these so much! So simple and handy, particularly as someone with mental health issues who struggles with motivation and eating breakfast (and mornings in general!). Because I live in cold Scotland I like to give it a 60 second blast in the microwave as well and they turn out fab 😉 I don’t usually feel compelled to leave comments on recipe pages, but I just wanted to let you know you’ve truly helped me and improved my quality of life! <3
This honestly made my day! I am so glad you came across this recipe and are loving it. Thank you so, so much!
I love these recipes. I’m not a fan of oatmeal, but my husband is. I tried this to gain a love for oatmeal because I know they’re good for you. Immediately, I fell in love. They are delicious to eat while cold. This will become a part of my breakfast.
I’m so happy I could help you fall in love with oatmeal! Yay!!
Do you happen to know how many oz your glass jar is??
These are actually cups made by Lucky Brand which are no longer available, but they are 16 ounces.
I decided to give overnight oats a try and found this recipe! I followed everything except the chia seeds because I couldn’t find any at the store. Personally, I found I’m not a fan of the sourish tang added by the yogurt, so next time I might forgo that, but the Nutella* and bananas did mask it and make it a very yummy and healthy lunch! It’s good cold or warmed up, too.
*(I want to disclaim I used a lower sugar Nutella alternative because normal Nutella is very high in sugar, and it was still delicious!)
So happy you found this recipe! It may help to use a yogurt that is not Greek yogurt/ not as sour, so you can still get the texture.
With adding in vanilla extract and honey, do you recommend using a plain greek yogurt, or should I get vanilla or honey flavored if I don’t care for the plain? Last I remember trying greek yogurt, I didn’t care for it, but it could have been the flavor, too. Who knows? 🤷🏼♀️ I just don’t want it to be toooo sweet. Thanks in advance!
I would use plain Greek yogurt, add the honey will sweeten it! Some find that plain Greek yogurt with honey is too sour/ not sweet enough, so, in that case, I’d recommend a flavored Greek yogurt.
Excellent blog you’ve got here.. It’s hard to find good quality writing like yours nowadays.
I seriously appreciate people like you! Thank you.
That is so sweet! Thank you so much!!
I absolutely love when I finish a jar of almond butter, because I always treat myself to some overnight oats the next day in the empty container – such a great trick! Also super quick and easy to make and modify to whatever toppings you’re in the mood for. One of my go-to’s!
Yay! One of my favorite ways to eat overnight oats too!!
Just made the peanut butter and jelly one tonight. I didn’t read the how to before hand so I ended up mixing everything up together. Rather then layering the jelly and peanut butter on top. Hopefully it’s still ok! 🤞
Overall, the flavor should still be there!
Awesome and so easy! I omitted the sweetener completely and it was still fantastic! The vanilla gives it great flavor. Can’t wait to try all the variations!
Yay! I can’t wait either!!
I tried making these last night and they turned out extremely dry, to the point of being inedible. I only added the milk, oats, and chia seeds. Is there anything to help with the consistency?
I’d recommend adding more milk or adding yogurt to help with the consistency!
Going for it.
Yay! Hope you like it!
Absolutely delicious!!!!!
Thank you!!
I eat my overnight oats 6 days a week, some weeks 7 days! I really enjoy them and feel better and have lost weight! I do not use mason jars, someone gave us a couple of small microwaveable Pyrex bowls with sealing plastic covers, I mix my oats in these, heat them in the microwave and eat them in the same bowl!
Wow i love to hear that! So amazing to see how you’ve made it part of your daily breakfast and lost weight doing so! Thanks so much for sharing!
Love these recipes! So yummy! Thank you so much xx
Thank you!!
quick concise and easy to follow. Thank you!
So glad to hear it!
Love it and thank you for the recipes!
So happy to hear that! Thank you 🙂
I was surprised by how much I loved the peanut butter and jelly version. So incredibly yummy!! Didn’t have crushed peanuts on hand, but will definitely try next time. Thanks for a great recipe:)
That one surprised me too! The flavors are incredible together! Thanks for taking the time to share
I loved all the recibes. They are easy to make!!
Hi, what size mason jars should I use?
I recommend 12-16 ounces depending on how many toppings you want to add 🙂
This is a great recipe! I had sour cream on hand instead of yogurt and the consistency was perfect. Thank you!
Oh I never thought to use sour cream…great idea!
I wasn’t sure how I would like the taste of cold oatmeal, but, this recipe has changed my taste buds. This is an awesome recipe and I will definitely recommend it to my friends. It was not overly sweet. And the oatmeal did not have a “pasty” taste. I made four jars and I eat one jar per day, half in the morning with fresh fruit and then the other half later on as a snack. Add nuts and whatever else. Very delightful. Easy recipe to follow. Thank you for sharing this as I will do the same.
Sincerely,
Ms. Carmen Carter
Mt. Juliet, TN
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for taking the time to leave the feedback!
Amazing!! Just what I need, quick, lots of healthy nutrients!! ❤️ Thank you!
You’re so welcome!
Can I ask where you bought the glasses?
Yes, they are from Macy’s Lucky Brand Double Old Fashioned, but they are no longer available unfortunately!
I’m sitting at my kitchen table this cold, drizzly day, digging into the banana Nutella one I assembled last night. I’m really excited. Never owned a bag of chia before. I’m one of those breakfast-skippers who traditionally caffienates til 1 p.m. and then remembers to eat.. but I’d like to change that. This recipe helps. 🙂
I’m so happy to hear that!! Enjoy it!!
Hello 🙂
These look so lovely and I cannot wait to try them. So I wonder, all the different types are 378kcal?
That’s actually just the base recipe since it includes oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds. Anything you add on top will be additional. Mine usually end up around 500 calories, but I have them after working out and they really fill me up for a few hours!
I have tried peanut butter & jelly and this morning apple pie! I am in loveeeee! SO GOOD! I feel like I am eatin a dessert 😍 I am sharing the recipe with my friends! thank you!
So happy to hear that! It seriously tastes like dessert…I agree!
Do the old fashioned oats need to be cooked first? Seems like if they aren’t cooked, they would be hard to eat.
They basically soak overnight in the milk, yogurt and other add-ins.
Love it for those late night movies and early mornings.
I have tried mashed banana, granola and maple syrup. Yummy
Yay, so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
If you put apple in your recipe, won’t apples turn brown overnight?
Not really since they are coated with the yogurt and milk. They soften a little but I haven’t noticed they brown. You can also add them in the morning. Sorry for the late reply, I was moving 🙂
Can you add nut butters instead of sprinkle nuts?
I made the apple pie overnight oats on a whim the night before. I didn’t have any yogurt and vanilla so I didn’t add those to the recipe. The oats came out amazing! Best batch that I’ve ever made!! Even my kiddos loved it and have requested that I make them some for tomorrow’s breakfast! Looking forward to trying the other choices, thank you!
Aww, so glad to hear that! Thanks so much!!
The taste was great but it came out very pasty.
Hmmm, did you change something in the recipe? I’ve never had it come out pasty.
Love, love, and overly obsessed. This is a lunch staple. I fast and eat this for lunch. Filling and tastes amazing. I did swop out the Greek yogurt for a low sugar 3g, high protein vanilla yogurt. Where did you purchase your glass cups?
So glad you love the recipe!! Thank you so much!
I got the glasses from Macy’s. They are lucky brand here’s a link to them, but they are sold out: Lucky Brand Double Old-Fashioned Glasses
I always look at the ratings and comments before trying a recipe and this one is definitely a 5-star recipe! I’ve been breastfeeding for 4.5 months now and my poor mom would got through the lengthy process of boiling oats, adding milk, etc to help my milk supply. I wish we had known about this easy and delicious recipe earlier!!!
I tried the apple pie combination which was absolutely delicious! I love the softness the chia seeds add to the recipe, I totally wasn’t expecting it to come out so deliciously moist. The only thing I did differently was that I added a bit of milled flaxseed to the base recipe to make it even healthier. I think nursing moms could probably even add debittered brewers yeast to this (I find the taste a bit too strong personally).
This is definitely a go-to breakfast item for me from now on. Thanks!
I’m so glad to hear that! Thanks so much for your amazing review. I really appreciate it!
Loved the apple pie oats! Came out great the very first time I made it!
Yay! I’m so glad to hear it! Thank you 🙂
Very cleared n good suggestions. Thank you so much ❤️
So glad to hear it. Thank you!
oh my goodness !! These overnight oats are delish ! My go to now. My husband loves them as well. Thanks for the great recipe.
I’m so glad to hear that you loved the recipe. Thanks so much for sharing!
i used oatly oat milk for this recipe and it made it rich and oh so creamy! we’ve had an excessive heat wave and this was the perfect way to eat oatmeal. i added some frozen blueberries and it was the perfect amount of sweetness (i didn’t add any othet kind of sweetener). if anyone knows me, they know i can’t ever resist a set-it-and-forget-it recipe! will definitely be making this again. i want to try the almond joy version next!
Thanks so much for sharing Keri!! So glad you enjoyed it!
so good
Thank you!
May you please share the portion sizes that you used for the dry ingriedients? Thank you!
If you jump to the recipe at the bottom, it’s all in there. Let me know if you have other questions.
Thank you for the info! I had no idea it was all there 🙂
These are PERFECT for breaking my fast. It keeps me satisfied until my next meal, and the taste and textures are so fulfilling!
So glad to hear it! Thanks so much!!
Delicious!
So glad you liked it!
I made this. Seriously? It was not very good. What motivation is there for not cooking the oats?
Because they absorb the liquid and become super soft. Are you sure you used rolled oats and not steel cut oats?
Overnight oatmeal are the next lever of eating breakfast, omg so good This was my first time making overnight oats , I enjoyed it cold first time as well 👍🏻😋 and in a empty jar of mixed nut butter win win
Yay! So happy to hear that! We are obsessed with overnight oats at my house!
Hi Yumna! I really appreciate you sharing this recipe. I tried it and liked it a lot! Because of my picky little ones, I might need to take the yogurt out of the picture though. What would you suggest me to do in this case? How can I substitute the yogurt part?
Thanks!
Thanks so much! You can totally skip the yogurt and add more milk to help absorb the chia seeds.
Trying these this week! What size jar do you suggest using? I am going to order glass jars so my daughter and I can both have a healthy breakfast on busy mornings. 🙂
I recommend 12 ounces so you can have room for toppings, although 8 ounces work well too.
Love this recipe. Can I ask where you got your jars or what brand they are? They are so aesthetically pleasing!
Thanks Sarah! They are Lucky Brand from Macy’s and I linked to them in my shop under “Home”
Turned out great. I tried someone else’s recipe a while back and didn’t like it so much – it was like eating soggy cereal. I think the Chia seeds make a difference. I like to add strawberries and honey to mine, plus some hemp hearts. I am going to try a pina colada version next.
So glad to hear you enjoyed this recipe…it’s my favorite! Thank you so much!
I am on maintenance for Weight Watchers and heard others talking about overnight oats but didn’t have the recipe. I am going to try this!
I hope you love it!!
Assalaamu Alaykum Waragmatulahi Wabarakatu.
I’m definitely gonna try this, as my mornings are very rushed, with preparing meals, starting with breakfast finishing off with lunch for an entire family of 5 and then having to rush to bath n clean n off to work. For me this is a gift… ALLAAH reward you Yumna for all ur efforts and sharing in making life easy for us as women and very simple for all the males out there Aameen.
Thank you so much! I hope you like them and it makes your mornings easier!
So that’s week 2 done of us making your amazing overnight oats for breakfast. My son loved helping me make the oats on Sunday evening and has a massive smile in the mornings as he comes into the dining room and sees today’s creations before school ( we live on Scotland, so schools back already and we have all 4 flavours throughout the week). And we both like it warm so 30s in the microwave, stir, then another 30s, stir again then we add the amazing topping! The Nutella is his favourite and the apple pie is mine ❤️
Love that you made it for 2 weeks with your family. My daughter also likes to have it warm! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Thank you for the recipe ! Can it be made without the chia seeds?
Absolutely! You can skip the chia seeds, and if you want, you can decrease the amount of yogurt or milk by 1/4 up since there won’t be as much chia seeds to absorb the liquid.
Can I use steel cut oats for overnight oats?
Not for this recipe sorry.
Thanks for this recipe! For some reason I had such a hard time finding basic overnight oats without bananas (allergy) or Greek yogurt (plant-based). These are perfect! I can’t believe how sweet they they taste with just a little maple syrup. I also add raisins and cinnamon and make it in a big Tupperware with a x6 recipe.
Love that you made a huge amount! And yes, you don’t even need the banana…glad you tried it and liked it!
This recipe is a healthy simple breakfast
Thank you!
It truly tasted like apple pie! I had never had overnight oats so I wasn’t sure about the texture. The delicious flavor encourage me to keep going. Yum and filling!
So glad to hear that! Thank you!
Hi! I was wondering how long these last in the fridge? My husband wants them for breakfast before work so I was going to make 5 Sunday night, will they go bad?
5 days is perfect – you can even push it to 7 days, but 5 is preferable. Just note that if you add fruits like bananas, they may soften and get browned, but they’ll still be fine to eat 🙂
I copied ur idea of overnight oats in a peanut butter jar except i used a lotus biscoff butter jar 😍 it was aaaaamazing
Ohhh I love that idea!! Thanks so much for sharing!!
Can you add all the ingredients including the toppings the night before?
Absolutely! Somethings like fruits and nuts will soften, but they actually end up flavoring it really well. I love adding bananas at night, they are sweeter in the morning!
Thank you, really good substitute for our favorite Bircher-Muesli.
Yay! So glad to hear it. Thank you!
I’m making my first ever overnight oats this evening to try tomorrow morning & I’m excited to try it with chia seeds & banana or I’ll try one of Yumna’s delicious recipes.😊
Yay! I hope you love it! Let me know how it turns out. Thank you!!
Tried overnight oats for the first time! Of course I went with the Nutella one! It was delicious! The serving size was a bit large for me though. I’m gonna half it next time and try to add more fruit on top! Can’t wait to experiment!
Yay, I’m so glad you tried it and enjoyed it! The nutella one is so tasty!!
I REALLY loved this idea, I went out and purchased mason jars specifically for this recipe! I must admit, I use this recipe with chocolate almond milk for a dessert like alternative with cocoa nibs and strawberry and/or banana, delicious!
Oh this mason jars will come in handy for sure!! I’m so glad you tried this and loved it!
Hiya
I was reading your comment and thought OH NO!!!
I’ve not checked the cupboard yet for a suitable vessel to make my overnight oats in !!!
I remember keeping a couple of nice jars for use as a spare vase so I went to my small kitchen cupboard and found 3 nice jam jars ⭐️😊⭐️/ overnight oat jars.
Haha, that’s perfect!!
This was so simple and fun to prepare and eat. I was so excited to eat in the morning, I couldn’t stop thinking in the night :D. Can’t wait to try the different combinations of toppings. Thanks!
Yay, so glad you liked it! Haha, I get excited at night too when I make some!
This is simple, quick & easy to do. I’ve been on protein shakes for the past 14 mornings ( which were gross by the way!) and I was hunting for a great Oat based breakfast recipe, that was quick and easy to do, for my next step on my weight loss journey.
Thank you for writing up this easy to follow recipe as an alternative to traditional hot oat breakfast.
I’m so glad that you’ve turned to overnight oats during your weight loss journey. Hope you continue to enjoy them and good luck!!
My daughter tried the overnight oats and they were absolutely delicious! Thankyou.
She always has in Dubai. I love nuts so I added lots of them along with chia seeds.
Agree with the post above that’s it all ready in the morning no cooking involved.
Yay, so glad to hear! Thank you!
This was very nice! I used plain yogurt instead of Greek and sugar vanilin instead of extract for the base, and in the morning I drizzled an extra 1/2 tsp honey and some crisp green grapes and it turned out wonderfully! I’m excited to try out new combinations with this recipe, it worked great! Thank you! xx
So glad you tried it and enjoyed it!! Thank you!!
This is such a great recipe for breakfast! I used almond milk and a teaspoon of honey instead of maple syrup. I put a very small amount of peanut butter (half a teaspoon) in it in the morning with just a splash more of almond milk. Just delicious! You can tweak the recipe however you choose! So many options! Fabulous!
And the best part?? You just grab it right out of the fridge in the morning! No cooking, no standing around and waiting. It’s just ready for you to eat and enjoy!!
So glad you enjoyed them. Thanks so much!
For the past few weeks my finance and I have been making these overnight oats for breakfast the following day. We have both loved being able to have breakfast prepped and ready for our busy mornings. My 1 year old son has now taken to eating half of mine! Absolutely love the easy to follow recipes and ideas!
Aww thank you so much! So happy to hear everyone is loving it, even your 1 year old son!!
Loved this overnight oats so much! Thank you!
Thank you!
Hi, can I ask is this 378 cals including the different toppings? Thanks!
It does not include the toppings – it’s just the base recipe.
This is an odd sentence on your webpage: I literally learned to cook 2 weeks after I got married over the phone with my mom.
Not only did you get married over the phone, but you married your mom. I think you meant to say, “Two weeks after getting married, I learned to cook by talking to my mom on the telephone.”
LOL, you’re right! I should update that! 😂
Jim, you are so rude. Nothing better to do than “correct” grammar? Go teach English if you’re so concerned. And by the way, people know exactly what she was saying….
Thanks so much Valerie!!
Thank you for the recipe. I’ve been thinking about trying overnight oats for sometime. This stay-at-home forced my hand because I didn’t want to eat bread for breakfast and lunch. And it has grown on me. The variations and tips are great.
Yay, I’m so glad to hear that you finally tried the recipe and enjoyed it. Thanks so much for the feedback!
Thank you. I’ve enjoyed overnight oats from the farmers’ market frequently but this recipe had me making them on my own. So easy, so delicious and so versatile!
So glad you’re making it on your own now! Bet it’s cheaper too!!
Delicious with cashew milk!
So glad to hear it!
Delicious! Where are your glasses from? 💖
Thank you! They are from Macy’s – Lucky Brand: https://rstyle.me/+_YTwEb54uYuuNUB4aA3pIQ
It was sooo good! I added coconut flakes, blueberries, and agave nectar this morning. 😋
Yay! So glad to hear that you enjoyed it! Thank you!
I’d been looking everywhere for a basic ratio so I could customize toppings I already have instead of going out and buying extra stuff. Thank you so much for the fantastic explanation!!
Yay! I’m so happy this helps!! Thank you!!
I look forward to eating these overnight oats several mornings each week…dried cranberries & chopped pecans are my favorite combo! Can I substitute ground flax seeds for the chia seeds I normally use?
I hope you liked them!! And yes you can totally substitute with ground flax seeds!
Omg thank you so much for the overnight oats recipe I’ve been doing it everyday and I’m in love! It’s perfect and very filling😁
So glad to hear that! Thank you!!
Love this basic recipe for overnight oats! I add homemade applesauce and Nutella to mine. Blueberries or strawberries if i have them. I use honey vanilla yogurt but had to substitute strawberry yogurt last night and it was so good. Plain and simple is how I roll with it.
Thank you! Nancy
So glad you love the recipe! I like the different topping ideas you use…they sound so good with the oats!
Love love love!
Thank you!!
LOVE your recipes and your blog!! Thank you for everything and sharing.
Just wanted to say that i made ur overnight oatmeal last nite as a matter of fact just finished it up rite now- and its unbelievable! So so good! Thank u sooooo much 💜💜💜💜
Yay, so happy to hear that. Thank you!!
Thank you so much!!
Loved it so much 🤤🤤
So easy to make and so delicious! I make them almost every week!
Yay! So happy to hear that!
LOVE this recipe! Perfect for the whole family and I like that there are multiple options for topping/ flavors!
Thank you so much! Glad you like it!
I recently used this recipe and also shared it with a friend! I just use the base recipe and added some strawberries and it was amazing. Very filling and perfect for on the go!
So glad to hear that you liked the recipe. Thank you so much for sharing!
i made overnight oats with red fruit and small bits of white chocolate. loved it! overnight oats are perfect for people with busy morning schedule.
Nice! So glad you enjoyed it!
This is awesome content. Thank you so much for this! I love the thoughtful (and delicious) approach.
Thank you so much!
This was my first time trying overnight oats…and i loved it!!!
It was delicious, creamy and i just couldn’t get enough of it!!!
❤❤❤
Aww so glad to hear it. Thank you!!
Do you put the toppings on in the morning or when you put it in the fridge
You can do it either way. It will be more fresh in the morning but sometimes it can be more tasty if you do it the night before since the flavors set better, especially with something like bananas!
Just tried out this recipe and it turned out amazing! Absolutely loved it and super easy too. 💕
Thank you so much!! So glad to hear it!
i just made mine with porridge oats and almond milk (i’ve just gone vegan so it’s hard to find quick breakfast recipes, but this helps a lot!) with chocolate powder mixed in topped with fresh bananas, i’ll update in the morning and let you know how it goes! thanks Yumna! 💚🌱
So glad that you made it and I hope you enjoyed it!
Are you able to make this with porridge oats? And can you use a plastic container instead of glass? Thanks x
Yes you can but it might be a softer consistency because of its texture. And yes, you can use a plastic container to make them in.
Thanks for the recipe was worth the wait
I’m so glad to hear that. Thank you!!
I was a little nervous to try it this morning, but it tasted delicious! I added lots of cinnamon which definitely helped. I’ll definitely be making this a lot!
It’s always weird the first time having this, but I’m glad you enjoyed it! And now you can play around with different toppings!
loved the idea going to try it tomorrow
I hope you like it!
Great. This is a good idea for my breakfast. Thank you!
So glad you liked it! Thank you!
Looks good! Can you use regular vanilla yogurt and less sweetener instead of Greek yogurt?
Yes you can. That will work!
Thanks for adding the different variations. I make Almond Joy overnight oats FAR too often!
Haha, that one is amazing!!
so YUMMY and so so easy! I have never been able to like oatmeal but these hit so different especially with the toppings!
Yay that’s great to hear. Thank you so much!!
I love this recipe!! I had been needing a healthier breakfast food! I tried this recipe with soy milk and it was amazing! Thanks so much!! 🙂
So glad to hear you’re liking it. Thank you so much!!
So easy and so delicious. I love your recipe. Thanks you!
So glad to hear it. Thank you!
Love this recipe so much! I did it in some leftover almond butter jars and topped it with fresh fruit. One of my favorites!!
Yum! Love making it it emptied jars. Thanks so much for sharing!
I had apple crumble leftover which i made with gluten free oats so i added almond coconut milk, flax seeds, chia seeds and dried cranberries this is what left my son ate all of if the taste is amazing thanks for your idea!
What a great idea! Love that you made it work with leftovers!
i thought it was a great recipe even though i despise chia seed texture, it was great i had it with honey, vanilla protein powder, almond milk, chia seeds and rolled oats. It was great!
So glad you liked it even with the chia seeds. They really get absorbed in there so it’s hard to taste them really. Thanks so much for the feedback!
Thank you for the recipe, it tastes like apple pie. So yummy!
Yay! Glad to hear it!
I am so in love with my overnight oats. Thank you so much!
Aww, so happy to hear it. Thank you!!
Hi! As you suggested in your instagram stories, last night I made overnight oatmeal in a empty tahini jar (not peanut butter, because it’s not so usual in Italy)…sooo good…what a smart idea, thank you for sharing…next time, I’ll try with an almond butter jar!
So glad you tried that! Thanks so much for sharing!
Tried it this week … yummy easy and healthy recipe..just loved it
So glad to hear that you loved it! Thank you!!
Going to try making this with Milk, Oats, Vanila Protein Powder and Honey. Maybe add a little fruit in the morning
That sounds perfect! Hope you like it!
your insane! its like we are connected because i was JUST about to do that, ewan we are one of the same. NOW EAT THAT LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER EATEN OATS EVER!
Just prepped a few for this week, thanks for the recipe! Also, can I ask where you bought your glasses/cups? They’re so cute!
Yay! I’m so glad to hear that you like the recipe! And these cups are from Macys – they are Lucky Brand. Here’s a link to them:
Lucky Brand Double Old-Fashioned Glasses
Thanks! Your dedication to replying to comments is awesome. You’ve certainly gained a fan. Can’t wait to check out more of your stuff!
Is the calories for the ingredients for the base of the mixture?
Yup, just the base alone.
Hi,
When I put the base ingredients into my food diary on fitbit app the total calories came to 447… can you break down how you got 332 as I’m getting an extra 100 and I’m putting in the same as your recipe…
Once I added the toppings it came in at 569 calories for the apple and pecan option… it’d want to fill you up for a good while at that amount.
It’s my first try at them so I’ll reserve judgement and see how I go today – tasted lovely ?
Hello – the break down is as follows. This uses the API database but keep in mind that every database is different. If you always use the same brands of ingredients, I recommend adding them to your fitbit so it can be more accurate. Hope this helps!
oats – 154 calories
milk – 74
yogurt – 35
chia seeds – 58
sweetener – 0 to 54 (I use a 0 calorie one often, but maple syrup would be 54)
vanilla extract – 3
Just wondering if I could add chopped up dried fruits
Yes, absolutely! You can add them the night before or in the morning 🙂
Can I use quick oats that’s all I have:)
You can, but they will come out pretty mushy. It’s best to make them with rolled oats.
I am looking at maybe mass producing this to use for breakfast at a jail. 500 serving to or three times a week. We would put them in a 14 to 16 oz solo cup with a lid and chill overnight, added no toppings in the morning. The PB&J sounds like it would work. I wonder how or if anyone tried frozen blueberries or applesauce. Would cut up apples mixed with the oats and milk work. Would the apple keep there color?
I love that idea! And I like the idea of using frozen blueberries and applesauce. The apples would be ok for 2 days probably only. They soften with the oats and do oxidize a little bit but they’ll be fine for a couple days. Hope that helps!
Thanks, the apples softening would be great. Wouldn’t have to worry about our soft diets.
Is this portion I eat within one sitting? Or can I split the portion into two? My mom insist that it is actually too much for a person in 1 sitting.
It is one portion for one sitting since it’s only 1/2 cup oats. But you can certainly split it into two if you’d like. Thank you!
So easy, so flavorful and an awesome base for any topping combinations! I even got my fiancé eating this in the morning and he is a very stubborn and picky!! Thanks so much for sharing the recipe! ?
Thank you so much for sharing! So glad to hear you’re both enjoying it to so much! 🙂
Hey, When you are making the peanut butter jelly one, do you add the jam and peanut butter and fruit the next day or just everything all in the night before?
Either way works! I think the jam and jelly are great mixed in overnight to help flavor the oats and it’s a good idea to add the strawberries and peanuts fresh in the morning. But you can also add everything at night or everything in the morning. It’s pretty flexible 🙂
Lovely recipe. I have a question about the glasses/tumblers you’ve sets the oats in. Are you able to share where you purchased them from? Thanks.
Thank you! Yup, these are Lucky Brand glasses from Macy’s. I linked to them in my Shop page. Here’s an affiliate link to that product:
I didn’t rate the recipe as I haven’t tried it yet. However, I wanted to comment and say you’re wrong about steel cut oats not working. Yes, steel cut oats aren’t as soft as rolled oats, but if you prefer a nuttier texture, they’ll work fine for an overnight recipe.
Here’s one that I’ve successfully used, although I just use 1/4 cup more milk than steel cut oats when I prepare it (1/2 cup steel cut oats, 3/4 cup milk):
https://www.wellplated.com/overnight-steel-cut-oats-recipe/
Oh that’s good to know! I’m going to have to give that a try!
I loe how easy and delicious it is to have in the morning. I’ve been sharing your recipe with everyone!
I love to hear that! Thank you so much!!
Really easy and tasty! I modified the base recipe, omitting the greek yogourt (didn’t have any at the time) and substituted the chia seed for flax seed. Didn’t feel hungry at mid-morning as I usually am. Thank you
That’s great to hear! Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂
I ADORE this recipe! Made it for the first time and used skim milk, vanilla Greek yogurt and omitted the maple syrup/vanilla/honey. Amazing! I mix in banana, tsp of peanut butter, strawberries and blueberries just before I eat it! SO good! I’m going to try more variations of milk knowing they’ll all be great. This keeps me full longer than my usual fruit, granola and yogurt!
Yay! I’m so happy to hear that! That’s how I feel about overnight oats as well. It keeps me full for so long. It’s so fun to try different toppings and ideas!
I’ve tried so many overnight oat recipes in search for one I would like and never liked any of them. I tried Yumna’s and am truly OBSESSED with it. The perfect on the go breakfast that’s not too sweet and very filling. 12/10 recommend.
Haha you’re awesome!! Thanks for the glowing review!! I appreciate it!!
I was looking for something filling that was still healthy that would keep my partner going. He is an ironworker with no access to a microwave. He adores this! I make it for him, and he has it every morning. He says he feels like he has more energy, and stays full longer. He actually looks forward to this and has even asked me to make a batch for the weekend as well. Thank you!!
Oh my goodness…that makes me so happy! I love that he can enjoy a healthy breakfast on-the-go without needing the microwave anything! You rock for making it for him 🙂
Just made my first batch for this week! I’m excited to try it. I tried both regular milk and coconut milk as well as trying with honey and maple syrup. I used the chia seeds but I’m wondering if hemp seeds or flaxseeds would be a good addition as well?
Love that you’re trying all the different variations of milk and sweetener. You can even use water and skip the sweetener, which I’ve done before! Regarding the seeds, any of those will work. Keep in mind that the chia seeds and flaxseeds absorb more liquid than the hemp seeds though, so you can adjust accordingly.
Delicious! I added some cocoa powder to the mix and topped it with peanut butter and banana ?
Mmmm I love that combination! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Hi there! Wanna try this next week. It seems so easy and quick and you’ve explained everything so well! I need to go and buy old fashioned oats but are there any specific ones you really recommend? I’m only used to eating quick oats.
Awesome! Just look for rolled oats or old fashioned oats. I usually buy the Bob’s Red Mill brand that I find at Target, Meijer or Kroger here in Michigan. Just don’t buy the quick oats. Hope you like it!!
Great presentation for a nutritious recipe!
Thank you!
Can I heat it up in a crock pot in the morning? I am making a batch for 30 people and would like to heat in a crock pot in the morning.
I think that should be fine! You can also serve it old if anyone prefers is that way! So amazing you made a batch for 30 people.God bless you!
Can I replace the Greek yogurt with strawberry yogurt?
And would almond work? Sweetened or unsweetened?
Yes, you can replace the yogurt with another kind. And you can use almond milk, either sweetened or unsweetened, depending on your preference.
Thanks for sharing. I’m very excited to try this.
Yay! I hope you like it!
I made this to eat this morning and it was delicious. I’m still comfortably full and it’s been 5 hours. I did use a half cup of oats and milk. I never used chia seeds at home before but was happy to try something new. I topped with berries and peanut butter.
Hi Erica – That’s so great to hear! What a perfect breakfast that is if you’re still comfortably full 5 hours later. Thank you for sharing!
Does it make a difference if I don’t use glass containers? I was going to try it with my rubbermade containers.
No need to use glass containers! It works perfectly with any container 🙂
Looks delicious, I’m just wondering if I use water instead of milk is it ok to put the yoghurt in? I just can’t imagine how well it’ll combine. Thank you!
Yes, that’s totally fine. It will actually combine just fine with water and yogurt together. Hope you like it!
Looking forward to trying these thank you
Hope you like it!
Used Swerve for the sweetener and coconut milk. I added just organic coconut flakes and Lily’s no added sugar chocolate chips in the morning. It was delicious.
That’s perfect! So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for sharing!
Yes, it is easy to make and and convenient. I like your method, but please advise me whether I have to wash the oats before adding in anything and store overnight. Thank you.
maureen
Hi Maureen – There’s no need to wash the oats beforehand. Enjoy!
Easy to make and it’s much easier than attempting to make it in the morning!
I completely agree! There’s something so great about finding those oats in your fridge the next morning!
The peanut butter and jelly overnight oats ARE SO GOOD!!! Another delicious recipe, thank you for sharing your gifts! ??
Yay! So happy to hear that! That combination is sooooo good!!
These were so yummy! Thank you!
Yes! I’m so happy to hear that!
Love this!! I used Siggi’s Vanilla Greek yogurt and also added the vanilla since I LOVE vanilla. I have fresh berries ready for tomorrow morning! Thank you so much. This definitely kept me full all morning!
Yay! So happy to hear that!
Thank you so much, I always wanted to make overnight oats and this post was just perfect!
I’m so happy to hear that! Thanks so much for sharing!
I’ve been seeing advertisements for overnight oats for a long time so I decided to try it. Today (Jan. 13, 2020) was my FIRST time trying it and I love it. I added cinnamon and nutmeg. I have a SEVERE nut allergy, I’m allergic to all nuts which means I can’t eat peanut butter. I use a product called WOWButter to replace peanut butter, I added that as well. The next morning I topped it with blueberries and I did warm it up a little.
This will be one of my go to breakfast options during the week. Thank you for the recipe.
That’s so great to hear! I’m so glad you tried it and it’s not your go-to breakfast! So amazing!!
I made some more for this morning’s breakfast. I added a little more milk.
Just finished making this for the second time. I find it hard to make time for breakfast so this really helps fuel me for the day in a hurry
Yay! So glad to hear that. Thanks for sharing 🙂
After seeing others eating overnight oats at work for the past few years I think it’s time I gave them a try! Thanks for the instructions and great options!!
Oh yeah, they are perfect for taking to work! I hope you enjoy them 🙂
Simple but tasty. Thanks!
Awesome! Thanks so much for leaving feedback 🙂
Do you have to use glass containers?
No, not at all. You can make them in tupperware if you prefer. I used the glass containers for photos to show the texture. But I also love using finished peanut butter jars, glass or plastic.
OH. MY. GOODNESS. After reading your article I decided to venture from the standard quick cook steel cut with my boiled egg. I drink whole raw milk (I know this is a much-debated item.) and generally have trouble consuming the gallon before it turns. I wanted the means cut down on waste so I got some bulk groats, chia seeds and blueberries. I made enough ONO’s for one serving, “just in case” it wasn’t for me. I added some ceylon cinnamon and raw honey. When I got up this morning, I was concerned. The presentation was totally unlike the oats I’m accustomed to eating. It looked…dry. I added the blueberries and dove in. My mind was blown! How can cold, pasty-looking oats be this good?!
I’m looking forward to trying other variations. Thank you so much for sharing this article with us! Just remember, you heard ONO’s here first. 🙂
Hahaha I totally feel ya! And I’m so glad that you enjoyed the recipe so much! So funny because my husband also calls them ONO’s and he’s the only other person I’ve heard refer to them as that. We’re going to start referring to them as that! Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about the recipe!!
So, my roomie bought me the wrong jug. She got raw kefir, which ain’t cheap. Before I open it, any idea if it will work in place of milk? I can otherwise return it. Thanks in advance!
Haha, actually you can totally use it in place of milk. And any liquid will work in place of milk, even water. Hope you enjoy the overnight oats!
Looking forward to trying some of these. Quick question though. I am not crazy about yogurt. Can I leave the yogurt out of the base?
Yes, you can definitely leave the yogurt out. All you really need is the oats and milk. 🙂
Can you use steel cut oats with this recipe?
No, unfortunately they don’t plump up enough to be palatable, so I wouldn’t recommend steel cut oats.
Tried the overnight oats for the first time today. Yum! I didn’t use the yogurt because I didn’t have any and I’m also trying to not eat dairy. It was still a nice consistency. I added blueberries and unsweetened coconut. So delish! I have to say I was surprised how easy and that I Love it!! It’s my new go to for my hurry up and get to work morning break-fast. Thanks!
That’s so awesome to hear that you enjoyed it! Love the combination of blueberries with the coconut…yum! Thanks for taking the time to leave the feedback. Means a lot to me!
Made this recipe using unsweetened almond milk, vanilla greek yogurt and maple syrup. I did not add vanilla extract since the yogurt was already flavored. I want to mention that this was my first time ever making or even eating overnight oats. I have never been a fan of oatmeal but figured I would give this a try since it was pretty different. First, the taste and consistency is wonderful. Creamy and thick instead of slimy and thick like traditional hot oatmeal. I love how versatile it is with the different toppings. I used organic peanut butter and banana for my first serving. This will become a new staple in my diet but I will likely cut the serving size in half. It was just too hearty for me and I don’t know if it was the carbs or what but I felt like I needed a nap after consuming. Not what I want to start my day off but I think half a portion size will be perfect.
Thanks so much for the wonderful feedback! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the recipe and liked the taste and consistency. I agree it can be quite filling to have the entire serving size. I usually eat it for breakfast and I’m full for a few hours, but you can certainly cut it in half. So glad you’ll be adding it to your morning routine. Thank you!!
I’m confused by the nutrition facts. 332kcal before any toppings?! Is that correct?
Yes, that’s correct. The 1/2 cup oats is 150 calories, the milk is about 50 calories, the chia seeds are about 100 calories, etc. It adds up, but it’s very very filling and perfect number of calories for breakfast!
I usually add the milk to cover the oats and then add nuts ( pine + crushed walnuts)and pinch of flaxseed (powdered) – and then top with a couple of spoons of normal yoghurt and honey. Leave overnight and then mix it before eating.. for variety i add shredded apple (half), pomegranate or berries or almond butter.
That sounds so delicious! I love that combination!
sounds easy and great!
Glad to hear it! Hope you like it!
Sensational idea. So easy and versatile with many different ingredients to add. At the moment i like to top with frozen fruit for extra chill.
Thank you so much for sharing your feedback! I love the idea of adding frozen fruit to it 🙂
What could be the alternative to using oats,I’m intolerant to oats
You can try making it with ground flaxseed, rice bran or chia seeds. I would also suggest quinoa but you’ll have to cook it before or find quinoa flakes, which are not always easy to find.
Thank you ,rice bran sounds good
After mixing the base, can I add the toppings the night before? I dont think that I will have enough time in the morning to chop and add! thanks
Yes, you definitely can!! I usually do that myself. Somethings like nuts may get slightly softer, but they will taste amazing!
Made this to take to work on an early start day.
It was really good texture and taste.
I used homemade no-added sugar apple puree to sweeten so it wasdiabetic friendly
Hi Sue! Thanks so much for sharing! So glad that you liked it and you were able to tailor to to be diabetic friendly!
This looks great! I have tried several of your recipes and have enjoyed them all. I generally eat a Paleo diet and I just encorporate your recipes as side dishes or sometimes the main course. Thank you!
Thank you so much Ronda! I’m so glad you’ve tried some of my recipes and enjoyed them! Thanks for the feedback 🙂
So yummy! So glad I came across this. This my breakfast everyday during the week at work. So easy and convenient to make the night before. It’s very healthy and keeps me full for a long time! Thanks so much for sharing
I’m so happy to hear that you’re enjoying them and prepping them for the whole week! Thank you so much for sharing your feedback 🙂
Is there a reason for the glass jar or container? Just curious, can u use plastic containers instead?
No real reason! For the photo purpose, I wanted to be able to show what’s inside. Also, some people like to reheat them in the morning and glass might be better than plastic for reheating. But you can certainly make them in plastic Tupperware with a lid!
I stole your peanut butter and jelly overnight oats recipe and been making it 5 times a week for about a year now!!! Absolutely love it…I get a nice, sweet and savory balance with the strawberry jam, organic peanut butter, fresh strawberries (especially when they’re tart) and lightly salted almonds to top it off. Great recipe!
Yay! That’s so awesome! I’m so glad to hear that you’re enjoying it and making it frequently! I originally thought of that combination for my kids but I ended up loving it way more than I thought I would haha!! Thanks so much for sharing your feedback 🙂
Awesome! Can swap almond extract for vanilla. Even my littles liked it!
Yes, absolutely! So happy your little ones liked it too!!
Looks great but I think I’d prefer it warmed in the microwave. Is it usually eaten cold?
It’s generally eaten cold, but you can definitely microwave it. My daughter heats it up in the morning in the glass jar.
I made the base as is without toppings and it is excellent! I had no idea overnight oats was this easy to make— and yummy to boot. Thank you for the recipe!
That’s awesome! The base alone is so good, I agree. So glad you tried the recipe and enjoyed it 🙂
Great recipe! As someone who doesn’t have much time in the mornings, this is a great time saver, and another delicious way to enjoy one of our favourite breakfasts, oatmeal!
just wanted to leave a little feedback, the pop-up video that you can’t close or move away from the screen… makes me leave websites instantly, but I stuck around to leave this reply as we love the recipe and wanted to let you know.
Keep up the great work!
Hello, thank you so much for the feedback on the overnight oats. But more importantly, thank you even more for the feedback on the pop-up video. I’m going to share this with my media company to see how we can cull it down for a better user experience. Thanks so much for sticking around the leaving me the candid feedback. It means a lot to me!
I can’t believe how good this is and have no clue why I haven’t made overnight oats until now!! This is definitely a staple for me from now on! Thank you for the recipe!!
Yay! It makes me so happy to hear that you enjoyed it so much and that it’s now a staple for you! We make a big batch every week and we all love it so much!
Thank you so much for all of your input on this recipe!! I had some at a local restaurant and really wanted to recreate it! Your recipe and info are the closest that I could find to this wonderful treat I had at the restaurant. I am SO excited that I now have a yummy, healthy option for breakfast!
Thank you so much!! <3
Yay! Thanks so much Chrissy for sharing that. That means a lot to me and I hope you like it! :)))
I’ve really been enjoying these oats! The instructions worked really well for someone who has had many failed attempts at overnight oats. Very exciting! Yum-o!
Yay! I’m so glad to hear that you’re enjoying them and found the instructions helpful! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
I’m really wary of this recipe because I’m trying to gain 20 lbs, and the description says it can “help you lose weight.” Would it be best to avoid overnight oats if I’m trying to put on fat instead of lose it?
That’s true that they’re great for weight loss because they’ll keep you full from all the protein and fiber. However, if you’re trying to gain weight, you can definitely still make these. I would recommend adding full-fat nut butters, and load it up with nuts, seeds, jams, fresh fruit and dried fruit. Those foods are healthy toppings that will add calories, protein and fat. Hope that helps!
Steel-cut oats work beautifully for overnight oats and provide even more fiber making them super diabetic friendly!
Oh great to hear! Did you cook them beforehand?
YAY!!! So glad to know this as I was wondering if steel cut oats would work. THANKS!!
what size jar did you use? i like the 8oz jars as i do not eat a whole lot at one sitting.
My cups that I used in the photo are 12 ounces, but they’re not filled to the top, so 8 ounces works perfectly!
Love it!
Yay! Glad to hear it!!
Thank you for the recipes! So much fun to try out!
Yay! You’re so welcome!!
Love this! So easy and whole family loves to grab these on the go:)
That makes me so happy to hear! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Hi, love this recipe and the different ideas.
If I use frozen fruit should I add them the evening before, when I’m making the rest of the oats?
Teg
Thanks so much! If you’re using frozen fruit, you can definitely add them the evening before. They will get softer by the morning, but they will also naturally sweeten the oats and taste great once all mixed up. Hope that helps!
Delish! Quick and easy. Healthy but satisfied my sweet tooth!
So happy you enjoyed it so much! Such a great healthy treat!
Yet a quick question. In the nutrition part, did you mean 322 calories because 1 kcal is equal to 1000 calories. That would make this to have 322,000 calories. By the way I added strawberries, pineapple and blueberries ( leftover fruit I had) and it was delicious. Thank you for the recipe
You’re so right! I”m not sure why my nutrition calculator is displaying it as Kcal. it should be calories. My apologies about that, and I’ll try to figure out how to fix it. Thank you!
Actually you are not wrong. A kcal and a food calorie are the same unit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calorie
Oh good to know! Thank you!
By convention, a food Calorie has uppercase C, and is defined as 1 kilocalorie, or 1000 calories.
Pretty! This was an incredibly wonderful post.
Thank you for providing these details.
Thanks so much!!
Good morning! Thank you so much for posting this! I have been wanting to try this method but never really knew how. Now I do! I have a question…if I make a couple at the first of the week and one is eaten later in the week than the first one was, is the later one going to taste different, texture wise? Maybe soggier than the first? I’m just trying to decide if I want to make all at one time or just make each the night before. Sorry if this is confusing.
Hi there! I’m so glad you’re finding this useful! I actually will make multiples on Sunday night and what I find is that the texture gets a little more dry since the oats continue to absorb the liquid but they don’t get more soggy. I usually just add a touch of milk and fresh fruit and toppings, and the texture is pretty much the same after 5 days. Hope you enjoy it!
Do you have to use a topping or can you just eat the oats? Thank you!
No the toppings are optional. You can just eat the oats 🙂
Do you heat this up before eating or eat cold?
Normally, these are eaten cold, but a lot of people do heat them up as well. My daughter likes them warm, so I always heat them up for her.
Do I have to use yogurt? Or, may I omit?
You can leave it out. You may want to add a touch more milk if you’re using chia seeds though so it doesn’t get too dry. Enjoy!
i absolutely love your base for overnight oats. I tired the apple pie and it was really good. Thanks for sharing this recipe
Yay! So glad to hear that you tried it and liked it. Thank you!
Absolutely in love with this overnight oat bowl for brekkie ?
Perfect for people who have a sweet tooth and like to start their day with something sweet PLUS healthy ? This has been my go to breakfast ever since I discovered it! All thanks to Feel Good Foodie ❤️
Thanks so much for sharing! I really appreciate that and glad that you’ve been enjoying the overnight oats so much!!
I’ve never been a huge fan of oatmeal, but choke it down because it’s healthy. lol This stuff is really good and is now my go-to for breakfast! My fav is the banana & Nutella recipe, but all I really need is half a banana and a scoop (tablespoon) of Nutella and it’s plenty sweet (and this is coming from a sugar addict!). I also leave the sweetener out when prepping the oats, and half the recipe seems to be plenty filling for me! Thank you for the recipe(s)!
So glad to hear that you enjoyed the overnight oats recipe! And I like the modifications you made to make it less sweet and smaller. Thanks so much for sharing!
I think this recipe would be fine if you don’t skip the chia seeds. I made the mistake of leaving them out because I didn’t have any and without them to soak up the excess liquid mine was more soupy than it should have been. Next time I will use probably half as much milk (without chia seeds) and see how that works out.
Oh yes, every tablespoon of chia seeds will absorb 1/4 cup of liquid approximately so you are correct in saying that. I will make sure to make that more clear in my recipe. The good news is, you can add more oats in the morning, give it a stir and let it sit for 1-2 hours and enjoy it then or even the next day. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Love it! I have never liked oatmeal, but this recipe changed my mind. Just made it for the third time. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! I’m so happy to hear that!
Trying out the overnight oats for 1st time, I have prepared gluten free oats 1/3 cup of Lactofree milk and 1 tablespoon of fat free Greek natural yogurt, was unable to get Lactofree or gluten free Greek yogurt, finely sliced 1/2 banana and added some cinnamon, mixed all together put into a klipit tub and in the fridge, hopefully the small amount of no gluten-free yogurt won’t affect me, I will taste tryin the morning 1st cold then warm to see which I prefer, I suffer from a few food intolerances, hence using gf where I can, fingers crossed .
Fingers crossed for you too that you enjoy it! I also use the gluten-free oats from Bob’s Red Mill and I use Califia almond milk with any kind of Greek Yogurt. I hope the yogurt is fine for you. In the future you can skip the yogurt and add a splash more milk if you’there using chia seeds or skip it all together or sub with another dairy-free yogurt.
I did this with the 1:1 oats to milk ratio (and 1/8 chia seeds) and refrigerated overnight and it did not turn out that fluffy. It turned out pretty solid, which was okay, just hard to scoop up. Tasted great though.
That’s great to hear! I think with the chia seeds in there it helps to have more liquid or yogurt to absorb it. But I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂
do you add the toppings the night before also or do you add them in the morning?
Both ways are totally fine, but they will be more fresh if you add them in the morning. If I’m using bananas or strawberries or peanut butter, I love adding them the night before so it flavors the oats!
Awesomeness versatile
Yay! Glad to hear that!!
I made blueberry for my husband and I today it’s cold so we heated them. It was wonderful, easy and kept me in bad longer in a Aunday morning! Thanks!
That’s awesome! Sounds like the best cozy morning! 🙂
What size mason Jar do I need?
I would say 8-12 ounces is best!
Can you heat it in the morning? For some reason cold oatmeal sounds gross to me.
Yes you can! My daughter does that all the time!
Thanks, it was delicious!
I have made all 3 except the Almond Joy, my son, niece and myself love them, My favorite is the Peanut Butter & Jelly minus the peanuts, Very filling.
Hi Tanaya – So glad to hear you tried 3 of the variations and that you enjoyed them! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
Can’t wait to try the almond joy one. I do have a question I don’t like yogurt of any kind, so do I increase milk in its place? Can I use almond milk?
Hi there, you can actually just skip the yogurt. There’s no need to put anything in its place. I hope you like it!
I am trying them this week, there were easy to make.
Yay! So glad to hear it! Hope you like them 🙂
Excellent and easy!
So glad to hear it! Thank you!
I did it this week and it was amazing. I’m hooked.
I hope you like it!
Hi is the base for several servings or just the one serving? And the estimated calorie intake is that just the base too?
Hi Kelly – The base is only for 1 serving and the estimated calories is only for the base without any of the suggested toppings.
I hate porridge and heard this is a nice alternative I used mixed seeds and added a mushed up banana and some coco powder and mixed well with a fork, it was amazing.
Thank for a great base for a recipe and giving me a new breakfast option (:
So glad you enjoyed the overnight oats recipe! Thank you for sharing!!
My sister uses molasass instead of honey or maple syrup. What can I use instead of chia seeds? (I don’t even know what they are).
That’s a great idea to use molasses instead of honey. The chia seeds are optional, but you can use flax seeds if you’d like or leave them out all together.
I really love this recipe! Tonight, as I was preparing tomorrow mornings breakfast I discovered that I was out of Chia seeds. I substituted Flax seeds for the Chia seeds and it still turned out very good.
I’m so happy that you’re loving the recipe and switching up the toppings and add-ins! It’s such a filling versatile recipe! Thank you so much for sharing 🙂
Also you can use hemp hearts for a nice protein boost if you can find them. They have a nice nutty taste.
Can I use a premier protein shake instead of milk?
Yes! That will work
Hi there, just tried your overnight oats recipe and just letting you know they taste amazing thank you very much!
So happy to hear that you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
I love your recipe, I tried Almond essence for a change. Really good
Thank you so much! And I love that you added almond essence to it!
Made the peanut butter and jelly one and loved it! My daughter has a demanding job, and 4 mos old twins – going to make a few for her in hopes of making her morning a little easier.
Hi Pat! I’m so glad to hear that you loved it. That would be so sweet to make some for your daughter. She’s going to love just grabbing them in the morning and not stressing about breakfast!
Hi there,
I definitely want to make this at home! I tried the overnight oats at Peet’s coffee and it’s delicious! instead of using a glass jar, can you mix this in a blender or in the nutribullet plastic bottles and let them sit overnight? Will it not taste the same if you blend the ingredients?
Thanks!
I have never tried mixing it all together but I definitely think the consistency will turn out mushy. Is there a reason you’re looking to blend it? You can prepare everything together in a bowl or cup or any container. When you mix it all together it blends well and the oats become super soft from absorbing the milk. I recommend trying it first without blending it and then see if you want it blended. Hope that helps!
blending the oats may break the proteins in it. That’s why it is more preferred to eat rolled oats without cooking it or blending it. 🙂
Source from multiple articles, and from a health professional.
I’m wondering why the recipe doesn’t include how much milk is required. I haven’t made this before and I don’t want to guess.
Hi Tracey – If you scroll to the recipe card, it shows it as 1/2 cup milk for 1/2 cup oats. Hope that helps!
I fell in love with Overnight Oats when I came across a sale on the packaged kind at the grocery store.
I’ve been looking for a recipe for a homemade version ever since – and this is it!!
My mornings will go back to being happy, happy, happy. Thank you so very much.
I’m so happy to hear that you’re excited about this recipe! It really is a staple in my house and we make it all the time with so many different types of toppings!
Getting ready to make some of these recipes. Just one question, can you use Greek flavored yogurt or should it be plain?
Yes, any yogurt works! Hope you like it!
Hi! Can you put the toppings in the mason jar overnight too or do you put them on in the morning?
Yes you can. If you’re adding in fruit (especially bananas), you can mix it right in so it sweetens the oats and doesn’t oxidize on top. If you’re adding granola, dried fruit, coconut or nuts, you can place them on top and close the lid of the container. Just note that items like nuts may soften by the morning, so you may want to add those fresh before eating. Enjoy!
I am allergic to bananas, what can I use for a substitute for it?
You can use any fruit you’d like! Try strawberries, peaches or apples 🙂
HI! Just made it today but what’s the point of having both the honey and vanilla extract?
Glad you made it! The vanilla extra just adds a subtle sweetness and the vanilla flavor. You can definitely leave it out.
Hi Yumna, is it necessary to add yogurt? I am not a big fan of sweet Curd. I prefer salted one.
No it’s actually not necessary!
Thank you- changed my mornings!!!
So glad to hear that! Thank you!
I find being able to buy rolled pays in bulk, seedless raisins, nuts, and dried fruits a block from where I live is a blessing. I save so much money. Always changing the fruits and nuts as not to get bored with my greatest meal.
Amazing recipe. I am an expecting mom that is having a hard time finding things that I like (or you could say, what little one likes). I can eat a jar of this and be full and happy!
Awww that makes me so happy! It’s such a nourishing filling meal when you’re pregnant!
Me and my husband have been eating this everyday for the past week! We’re always on the run so something so simple and filling is definitely a plus! Absolutely love this recipe ❤️
That’s so great to hear Paula!! Thank you so much for sharing and I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Yumna’s oats make for such a quick, easy, and nutritious breakfast that it’s become one of my favorite go-to meal preps! I got my entire family on this!! It’s basically a no-cook, genius method for making oatmeal? My boys and I had so much fun playing around with the toppings that we even made a healthy Nutella to go with it? I enjoy these overnight oats almost daily with simply berries and nut butter – the addition of chocolate, once in a while! My mornings are super hectic, so I just grab and take to work with me, how great is that?!
I combined 1/2 cup gluten-free rolled oats + 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk + 1 Tbsp chia seeds + 1 Tbsp pure maple syrup + 1/4 tsp vanilla extract in a glass cup or you can use a mason jar, covered and refrigerated overnight. I added a splash of almond milk to the oats in the morning, gave it a little stir and the boys helped me top them with banana we cut into mini stars + homemade nutella (hazelnuts, cacao powder, coconut milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, pink salt) + dairy-free chocolate chips + crushed hazelnuts. Amazing.
Thanks you so much for sharing! So glad to hear you enjoyed them and that you had fun playing around with the different toppings! Thank you!!
Sorry, I meant to say Steel Cut Oats. I love the bite and not soggy
Glad to hear it!
