With tropical flavor and loads of nutrition, this Avocado Smoothie is the best way to start the day! No need for a banana here—avocado adds all the creaminess you need, along with a good dose of healthy fats. A handful of kale brings fiber and nutrients to the table, while pineapple makes it perfectly sweet and tangy. If you’ve been looking for an avocado smoothie recipe without banana, this is it!

If you’ve never had an avocado smoothie before, you might be approaching this recipe with skepticism. Stay with me! The avocado is here mainly for texture, giving this smoothie a rich, creamy consistency and healthy fat to make it extra satisfying.

The flavor of this avocado smoothie is pure tropical goodness, thanks to a combination of coconut water, pineapple, and lime juice. There is some kale too, but it adds just a bit of earthy flavor without dominating.

Between the coconut water and pineapple, I think this avocado smoothie is sweet enough on its own, but if your tastes tend towards the sweet side, you can add that extra tablespoon of maple syrup.

Ingredients You’ll Need to Make This Avocado Smoothie

Ingredients for recipe: honey, coconut water, kale, 2 avocados, lime, and pineapple chunks.
  • Coconut Water: Coconut water is a natural way to balance electrolytes and it’s super hydrating.
  • Ripe Avocado: Here’s How to Cut an Avocado.
  • Frozen Pineapple Chunks: Using frozen pineapple is convenient, and it also makes for a creamier avocado smoothie.
  • Kale: Curly kale or lacinato kale both work in this recipe.
  • Maple Syrup: Add this for a sweeter smoothie. Honey also works.
  • Lime: Use fresh lime juice, which has a brighter flavor than bottled.
  • Add Protein: A scoop of vanilla or unflavored protein powder will give your avocado pineapple smoothie an extra boost of nutrition.
  • Blend in Some Seeds: Chia, flax, or hemp seeds will add even more healthy fats, along with some extra protein.
  • Swap the Pineapple for Banana: As written, this is an avocado smoothie is made without banana, but you can use a small frozen banana in place of the pineapple if you’d like. Another option is to use half the amount of pineapple and add half of a small banana.
  • Use Spinach Instead of Kale: Bagged baby spinach will save you some of the prep time needed for kale, plus it adds no flavor at all to this avocado smoothie recipe.

Tips for Making the Best Easy Avocado Smoothie

  1. Add the Liquid First. Pour in the coconut water and lime juice, then add everything else. Layering the liquid at the bottom of the blender creates a vortex that sucks the solid ingredients towards the blade, minimizing the need to stop the blender to shake or stir.
  2. Use More Liquid If Needed. Depending on the size of your avocado, you may need to pour in some extra coconut water to create a sippable consistency.
  3. Stir Before You Pour. It’s easy for unblended avocado chunks to hide in this smoothie! Stir the mixture in the blender to make sure there are no unblended pieces before pouring the smoothie into glasses.
  4. Clean Your Blender the Easy Way. Add water and a small squirt of dish soap to the blender jar, then blend on high to clean the inside of your blender.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use milk instead of coconut water?

The avocado makes this smoothie creamy and rich, which is why I like using coconut water instead of milk. If you do use milk, I recommend a plant-based milk or skim milk.

Will this smoothie turn brown?

The lime juice should keep this avocado smoothie from turning brown right away, but if you store it in the refrigerator for a full 24 hours, it may be discolored by the time you drink it. It’s still safe to drink, though!

I cut my avocado, and it’s not ripe. Can I still use it to make an avocado smoothie?

Yes! Unlike guacamole and salads, you can use unripe avocados in smoothies.

Start your day with this creamy avocado smoothie! It’s loaded with healthy fats, electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals, and the tropical flavor will have you feeling like you’re on vacation—even if it’s the middle of winter!
