Air Fryer Whole Chicken is soo easy and soo good!

I was skeptical the first time I tried cooking a whole chicken in the air fryer. I assumed it would be too big for the basket or cook unevenly. Neither happened. The skin crisped up better than it usually does in the oven, and the meat stayed juicy all the way through. This air fryer whole chicken uses a simple paprika and thyme spice rub, nothing that needs much prep, and the air fryer does most of the work from there.

I usually make this air fryer whole chicken on weekends and pull from it all week. It shreds really well for rice bowls, wraps, and salads, and a 3 to 4-pound bird goes pretty far for a family of four. If you want that rotisserie chicken air fryer flavor without buying one from the store, the paprika is doing most of that work. It gives the skin that deep color and slightly smoky taste without needing any special equipment.

Happy Cooking!

air fryer whole chicken Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe: Whole chicken, olive oil, paprika, dried thyme, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Chicken: A 3 to 4-pound whole chicken is the right size for this recipe. Anything larger may not fit or could cook unevenly, depending on your air fryer model. Remove the giblets if they are still inside, then pat the chicken completely dry with paper towels before rubbing. Dry skin is what allows it to crisp. If the skin is wet going in, it will steam instead.
  • Spice rub: Olive oil, paprika, dried thyme, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Get the olive oil under the skin too, not just on the surface. Gently push your fingers under the breast skin and work the rub directly onto the meat beneath so it seasons through. If you want, you can swap the seasoning with spice blends like lemon pepper, Cajun seasoning, BBQ dry rub, ranch seasoning, and even taco seasoning tastes great!
  • Cooking spray: Just for the basket so the chicken does not stick when you flip it.

  • Place the chicken breast side down and cook for 30 minutes, then flip and cook breast side up for 20-30 minutes or until the internal temperature of the thickest part of the breast reaches 165˚F.

Notes

Nutrition information uses a 4 lb whole chicken.
My Top Tip: Use an instant-read thermometer to gauge doneness. The timing in this recipe is a guide, not a guarantee. Air fryer models vary a lot, and so does the weight of the bird. The only reliable way to know it is done is to check that the thickest part of the breast reaches 165°F.
Storage: Remove the meat from the bones and place it in an airtight container. Keep it in the refrigerator. Enjoy leftovers cold, or reheat in the microwave. Save the carcass–it makes an excellent homemade chicken stock! Air fryer whole chicken will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Freezer: Remove the meat from the bones and place it in a freezer bag or airtight container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw and reheat in the microwave.

Recipe Tips

  1. Pat the chicken dry before adding seasonings. Use paper towels to dry your chicken before applying the seasonings. It’s important that you apply the seasonings to dry chicken so that they adhere better.
  2. Distribute the spices all over. Rub the spice mixture thoroughly over the chicken, and under the skin, too, for the best flavor.
  3. Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes after cooking. This will help the chicken reabsorb and redistribute its juices so that it doesn’t lose them when you cut into it.
  4. Use an instant-read thermometer. The timing in this recipe is a guide, not a guarantee. Air fryer models vary a lot, and so does the weight of the bird. The only reliable way to know it is done is to check that the thickest part of the breast reaches 165°F.

FAQs

What size air fryer should I use for whole chicken?

A 5-quart air fryer should work for a whole chicken that is up to four pounds in size.

How do I know when my chicken is done?

Your chicken is done when the juices run clear when poked, and a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers 165°F. To prevent overcooked chicken, stop cooking it at 160°F. It will continue heating up as it’s resting, but it’s best to double check that the temp reached 165°F as it rested.

Why isn’t my chicken crispy?

You’ll want to make sure you leave plenty of room for the air fryer to circulate hot air around the whole chicken, so the chicken should not be touching the sides or the top of the air fryer. As long as the air fryer can circulate the air around the chicken, it should be crispy on the outside and tender inside.

The recipe says 35 mins Cook Time on top, but in the instructions is says 30 + 20-30mins so it should say Cook Time 50-60 mins.

Thank you, I have adjusted the timing accordingly.
