MAKE A BLUEBERRY BANANA SMOOTHIE!

I’m a big fan of blueberries in smoothies, but they don’t really add much “oomph” as far as being filling on their own. So, this blueberry banana smoothie is the one I make when I want to really taste the blueberries, but get in additional ingredients that will keep me full.

Between the frozen banana, Greek yogurt, and almond milk, it does just that. I’ll even toss some almond butter in my smoothie if I’m extra hungry or need it to last through a long, busy morning.

Happy Cooking!

Blueberry Banana Smoothie Ingredients

Ingredients to make the recipe: blueberries, bananas, hemp seeds, milk, almond butter
  • Blueberries: For the best flavor, choose large, plump blueberries. You can also use frozen blueberries.
  • Bananas: I like to use frozen bananas for creaminess.
  • Almond milk: I use unsweetened almond milk for this smoothie. Here’s how to make your own almond milk! You can also use oat milk, soy milk, or dairy milk.
  • Greek yogurt: I recommend plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt for creaminess.
  • Almond butter: It thickens the smoothie, adds a little nutty flavor, and adds protein. Here’s how to make DIY almond butter. Any nut butter, like peanut butter or cashew butter, works well here.

How to Make Blueberry Banana Smoothie

Step 1: Add all of the ingredients to your blender.
Step 2: Blend until smooth and creamy. Taste and add more milk if it’s too thick, or sweetener if you like.

Recipe Variations

  • Amp up the omegas: Add a teaspoon or two of hemp seeds, flaxseeds, or chia seeds for a dose of healthy omega fats.
  • Add protein powder: Pour in a scoop of protein powder for an extra boost.
  • Add vanilla: Add a little splash of pure vanilla extract and blend for a blueberry smoothie that tastes like a milkshake!
  • Add a handful of greens: I recommend baby spinach or baby kale for the mildest flavor. The color will fade, but it’ll still taste great.

Recipe Tips

  1. Use a high-speed blender. It makes the creamiest, smoothest drinks.
  2. Load your blender in order. For an even blend, add liquids first, then powders and sweeteners, then greens, then fresh fruit, then frozen fruit, then ice on top (if you’re using it).
  3. Adjust the thickness. For a thinner smoothie, add more milk. For a thicker smoothie, add more bananas or Greek yogurt. You can also blend in ice for a thicker, cooler smoothie.

This smoothie was amazing. I did add my own spin to it. I had to use whole milk and didn’t have any nut butter. I did 1/2 tablespoon of pure maple syrup and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. Heading to store now to get almond milk and some type of nut butter.

    1. Yumna J. says:

Yum, love those changes! So happy you liked the smoothie, Jen!

  2. James says:

I’d like to know how you calculated only 213 calories for this recipe.

    1. Yumna J. says:

The nutrition label provided is an estimate based on an online nutrition calculator. It will vary based on the specific ingredients you use. The nutrition value is for two serving without any fruit toppings.

  3. Carla says:

    What about freezing it?
Why can’t I freeze this or part of the recipe?

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

You can freeze it but since I use frozen bananas, I prefer now to re-freeze them.

  4. Mardi says:

I don’t know that I need to drink this daily with the ‘quarantine 15’ and all. However, with honey added, it tastes great. It’s not necessary though. I have to make sure my bananas are frozen, too, next time. Yum…

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Haha, I know what you mean!! Glad you liked it though!

  5. Keira says:

What if I wanted to add some extra cumber that I have in hand? Would it change any texture, flavor or anything important? Dumb question but would like to know soon.

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Do you mean cucumber? I think it will change the texture and I wouldn’t think the taste of cucumbers and milk would get well, but if you’re up for experiment, why not!

  6. Brandon Robb says:

Simple and very tasty will be making more of this delicious smoothie!

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Awesome! So glad to hear it 🙂

  7. Donna says:

I looked up your recipe to see the quantities to use since I had blueberries and bananas on hand. I just did those and milk with six ice cubes. I used the ice cubes since my banana wasn’t frozen. It made a delicious milkshake! Not too sweet, but nice flavor. Thank you!

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

That’s awesome! Glad you enjoyed the recipe! It’s one of my go-to smoothies!

  8. Kisha says:

I got a smoothie maker and so far all the smoothies we made so far my kids really enjoyed. This one sounds pretty good but I wonder about the hemp. I don’t know if that’s what some people use for “recreational” purposes or if it’s good for my kids to have in a smoothie?

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Hi Kisha, that’s a good question. There is a little confusion about this since hemp and cannabis are part of the same family. It all comes down to how much THC is in the product. THC is what makes people high. There’s 0% THC is hemp seeds and it’s 100% safe for you and for your kids to use it. It’s basically like sprinkling flaxseeds or chia seeds in your smoothies. It won’t really have a taste, but it will add some nutritional benefit. If you’re still feeling uneasy about it, you can leave it out of the smoothie. Hope that helps!

      1. Cynthia says:

Would flaxseed be an appropriate substitute for hemp seeds?

        1. Yumna Jawad says:

          Yup, that works!

    2. Eliza says:

      This was so refreshing!

  9. Megan says:

Very yummy and thick. I had frozen mixed berries

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Yay! Glad to hear you enjoyed it! And it’s great when you have frozen mixed berries to use in it!

  10. Sharisia Jones says:

I added yogurt and used peanut powder and frozen blueberries! Yum

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Love the added peanut powder with the frozen blueberries! Glad you enjoyed 🙂

  11. Gabby says:

Looks delicious! Is this smoothie thick? I like my smoothies thick and creamy.

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Thanks Gabby! It’s a little thick, but not too bad. If you want it thicker after it’s done, you can add some oats to thicken it up!

      1. Ana Palafox says:
