Air Fryer French Toast is so easy and soo good!

I started making air fryer French toast because I got tired of standing at the stove making French toast in batches while everyone was already hungry. This is just easier. You dip the bread, put it in the air fryer, and move on with your life for a few minutes.

What I like about air fryer French toast is that it still gives you that same basic French toast situation without needing a skillet going the whole time. Brioche works really well here because it holds up to the egg mixture without getting flimsy, and once you get the first batch in, the rest goes pretty fast.

Happy Cooking!

Air Fryer French Toast Ingredients

Ingredients to make the recipe
  • Brioche bread: Day-old or slightly stale bread works best here because it can soak up the egg mixture without getting too soft. If I know I’m making French toast the next morning, I’ll leave the bread bag slightly open on the counter or in the pantry so it dries out a bit overnight. If your bread is really fresh, you can put it in the air fryer for a minute or two first just to dry it out a little before dipping. Brioche is great, but challah or thick-cut sandwich bread can work too.
  • Milk: Whole milk gives the richest custard, but 2% works too. I would not use anything too low fat if you can help it because the mixture can feel a little thin.
  • Eggs: Room temperature eggs mix into the milk more easily and give you a smoother custard. If you forgot to pull them out ahead of time, you can let them sit in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes first.
  • Vanilla, cinnamon, and salt: Whisk the custard really well so the cinnamon is evenly mixed in and not sitting on top. Since this is a simple ingredient list, small things like fully mixing the custard actually matter for this air fryer French toast recipe.
  • Cooking spray: This depends a little on your air fryer and the parchment paper you use. If your basket tends to stick, lightly spray the parchment or basket before adding the bread. If your air fryer usually does fine without it, you may not need much.
  • Serving note: Maple syrup and powdered sugar are optional for serving. You can keep it simple or add fruit if that’s what you have.

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer 375°F and line the air fryer with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray if needed.
  • In a large shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and a pinch of salt.
  • Dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture and then flip it over to coat both sides. Place the french toast sticks in the air fryer and repeat with as many pieces as will fit in the air fryer at once, about 8-12 pieces.
  • Cook for 5-6 minutes, or until the french toast is golden brown and puffed.
  • Serve the french toast sticks warm with maple syrup and powdered sugar, if desired.

Notes

My Top Tip: Don’t over-soak your bread. Brioche has a soft texture and will soak up your custard mixture quickly! If you over-soak it, it’ll get soggy, and it can start to fall apart.
Storage: Once cooked, your French toast sticks will keep well for 2 days in a sealed contained in the fridge. They can be reheated in the air fryer!
Freezing: This air fryer French toast freezes really well and will keep well for up to 3 months. You can use your air fryer to reheat from frozen.

Recipe Tips

  1. Don’t over-soak your bread. Brioche has a soft texture and will soak up your custard mixture quickly! If you over-soak it, it’ll get soggy, and it can start to fall apart.
  2. Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper. If your bread is a little soggy, you can line the basket with a piece of parchment paper to keep the liquid from making a mess. Just make sure to preheat your air fryer before you add the parchment paper.
  3. Preheat your air fryer. If you don’t preheat your air fryer, your French toast sticks won’t cook through evenly, and the middles may come out raw. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat function, let it run at 375F for 5 minutes before adding your bread.

Serving Ideas

  • Add fruit. This air fryer French toast is so good with some freshly sliced strawberry, or banana. You can even try serving it with a fruit salad!
  • Serve with eggs. These sweet French toast sticks are my kids’ favorite side with scrambled eggs, baked feta eggs, or even a simple fried egg.
  • Pair with other breakfast favorites. I love serving this air fryer French toast alongside my other breakfast go-tos, like a yogurt parfait, egg white bites, or even a smoothie bowl.

This recipe went wrong from start to finish! That much vanilla overpowered everything, and the amount of milk called for made the bread crazy soggy, even after a quick dunk. A cooking time of 5-6 minutes was way off, my sticks were still soggy messes after the maximum cooking time! I had to do a lot of tweaking to this recipe to see results, two thumbs down 👎👎

Oh, I’m so sorry it didn’t work out for you! Can you tell me, what brand brioche bread did you use?

  2. Mel says:

This was delightful. If reheating from frozen, how long would you put them in the air fryer for? I’m new to air frying. Thank you.

    1. Yumna J. says:

I’m so glad you enjoyed them! You can reheat them straight from the freezer to the air fryer at 375°F for 5-6 minutes. Hope that helps!

  3. Elizabeth says:

Delicious flavor! First time, my parchment paper caught fire! Ended up cleaning out that mess, and then just air fried them without parchment paper and used a good dose of non-stick butter spray for each batch. Turned out great that way!

    1. Yumna J. says:

Oh no!! I’m so sorry that happened and hope you’re okay! Did you happen to put the parchment paper in the air fryer when it was preheating? It’s most likely to catch fire if it’s free-floating but should be safe to use if something is holding it down. If you preheat first, carefully place the parchment paper in the basket, spray it, and place the french toast on top right away, that should help prevent if from catching on fire. So happy to hear you were able to make it work without the parchment paper and your french toast turned out delicious! Thank you, Elizabeth!!

  4. Justine Monken says:

Wow! I made these with Berry sourdough bread and they were the best ever! Cooked for about 7 min because I wanted them super crispy! Fantastic! Thanks so much!

    1. Yumna J. says:

Yum, berry sourdough french toast sounds so good!! So glad you enjoyed, Justine!

  5. Amira says:

I’m new to using an air fryer. It would be helpful if the recipe included a note to flip halfway through the cooking time. I used parchment paper and a flat spatula to scrape/flip as they stuck to the bottom.

    1. Yumna J. says:

Hmm, you shouldn’t have to flip them halfway through the cook time. Did you use cooking spray on the parchment paper? My air fryer is nonstick but others have had issues with the parchment paper sticking if they don’t also spray with oil. Try spraying the parchment paper next time and see if that helps!

      1. Amira says:

I actually tried this recipe again today. Sprayed the parchment paper and flipped halfway – turned out perfect! Love this for an egg breakfast sandwich alternative for my kids. They get an egg and grain serving, but they think it’s a treat as it’s dipped in syrup!

        1. Yumna J. says:

Aww, I’m so glad to hear it!!

  6. Barbara says:

Easy and delicious! Thank you. I added vanilla, nutmeg and cinnammon to the egg and milk mixture. Great! Crispy on the outside, soft in the center and simply lovely!!!!

    1. Yumna says:

      So happy you enjoyed it!

  7. Isabella says:

Flavorless and took 5 minutes per side. Not certain where I went wrong.

    1. Yumna says:

So sorry to hear. How saturated was the bread when you put it in the air fryer? Also was the airfryer preheated?

  8. Lisa J says:

Thank you for this super easy and so delicious recipe! I preheated the air fryer and I used avacado oil spray on the parchment paper. I also turned the sticks halfway through cooking. They turned out perfect. This is a keeper recipe.

    1. Yumna J. says:

So glad you liked it, Lisa!

  9. Victoria C says:

Amazing I had been deep frying mine but kept looking for a better way thank you these are wonderful

    1. Yumna J. says:

Thank you so much! Glad you liked them!

  10. Michelle says:

Smelt good! But man did they stick! My husband wasn’t too happy cleaning the air fryer.
Unfortunately won’t be doing this in the air fryer again 😞 in the pan sure!

    1. Yumna J. says:

Oh, no! I am sorry to hear that. Did you try lining the bottom with parchment paper? I will dig deeper into this problem and see what’s happening. Please tell your husband I am sorry for the extra cleanup work!

  11. Sujay says:

Great recipe! If you are using a dryer or more dense bread, try to leave the slices in the wet mix a bit longer to soak up the good stuff. The ones I let sit in the bowl for a few minutes, turned out way fluffier and better than the ones I only gave heave dip. Dryer, denser bread may require more wet mix than this recipe calls for. But either way my son loved them. Thank you!

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Thank you so much! Great tip. Glad you both enjoyed it nonetheless!

  12. Salma says:

For the first time i made, Brioche air fryer French Toast and they were delicious.

  13. Sarah says:

I won’t use the air fryer for French toast again. Stuck terribly to the pan and peeled off the cooked part, leaving behind toast that was cooked perfectly on one side and soggy on the other. Recipe makes it sound like parchment paper is optional (and flammable, according to comments) and doesn’t mention sharing with oil. I’ll go traditional with a pan next time. Oh, the flavor was great, btw—nice recipe for the batter.

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

It is not flammable under 425. Is it possible you are thinking of wax paper? Parchment paper is completely safe to use and there are some specifically made for the air fryer.

  14. Rachel Blair says:

I just did this and laid down parchment paper. My air fryer caught fire 🤦🏼‍♀️ So be careful putting it in certain air fryers.

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

      Definitely be careful with that!!

      1. Sherry Martin says:

I used parchment paper on my first batch and they stuck badly. I used the silicone mat made for air fryers on my 2nd batch and no sticking at all. I flipped them last 2 minutes to acquire more even toasting. 2nd batch was perfect. Parchment paper should probably be sprayed with oil first.

        1. Yumna Jawad says:

I’m glad to hear a silicone mat works! Thank you for sharing that with me!

  15. Leann says:

Beyond delicious! My house smelled heavenly and the French toast was scrumptious. Hubby and I enjoyed every bite of it! I’ll definitely make it again. Thank you so much 🙂

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

Thank you! Love that you both enjoyed it!

  16. Valerie says:

I didn’t have parchment paper so I sprayed the air fryer pan with two different types of cooking sprays. Each time the sticks stuck to the pan. 😢 Will they stick using parchment paper too?

    1. Yumna Jawad says:

I’m not sure why that happened! It shouldn’t be the case, but let me know how it goes with the parchment paper.

    2. Emma says:

      Ugh me too!! 🙁

      1. Becky says:

Same! Stuck to the pan. Tossed it.

        1. Yumna Jawad says:

Did you try lining your air fryer basket with parchment paper?

    3. Kristina says:

They will not stick to the parchment paper as long as you spray with non stick spray! Also do not put the paper in to pre heat air-fryer, preheat then place paper then french toast or the paper, or the paper will catch fire. its safe to use as long as you have something holding it down

      1. Yumna J. says:

Great tip, Kristina, on not using the parchment paper during preheating! I am going to add it to the post, so more people see it! Thank you so much for commenting!
