My Fish Taco Slaw is So Good!

If you’re making fish tacos, shrimp tacos, or salmon tacos (recipe coming soon), you have to make fish taco slaw!

The great thing about making a fish taco slaw is that you don’t have to worry about preparing so many taco toppings. You can pile this on top of tacos or add underneath the fish and you’ve got all the flavor and texture at once. It’s so easy and you can prep it early because it actually gets better as it sits.

Fish Taco Slaw Ingredients

Red cabbage, green cabbage, honey, lime, mayo, yogurt, seasonings, and cilantro.
  • Greek yogurt: You can swap this for more mayonnaise to make it richer.
  • Mayonnaise: Using just a little mayonnaise adds creaminess to the slaw’s dressing!
  • Lime: You’ll need about 2 tablespoons of juice. Usually one lime is enough!
  • Honey: Maple syrup also works.
  • Cumin, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper: The cumin and garlic powder add the something the slaw’s dressing needs.
  • Cabbage: Red and green cabbage are what I prefer for some color. If you can find bagged, finely shredded cabbage, it’s a nice shortcut!
  • Cilantro: If you love cilantro, feel free to double the amount this recipe calls for (½ cup).
  • Fruit. Try adding thinly sliced mango, pineapple, or apple to this slaw!
  • Avocado. I always add avocado to fish tacos! Cubed avocado would be great in this recipe (but only if you’re going to eat it right away since avocado browns fast).
  • Vegetables. You can never get enough veggies, in my opinion. Shredded carrots or thinly sliced bell pepper would work well here.
  • Add heat. I’m always cooking for my kids, but if I weren’t I’d add a minced jalapeño to this slaw.

How to Make Fish Taco Slaw

Dressing ingredients in a bowl before mixing.
Step 1: To a large bowl, add the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, lime juice, honey, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
After whisking together dressing in a bowl.
Step 2: Whisk together until smooth.

Step 3: Add the green cabbage, red cabbage, and cilantro.
Recipe after tossing together.
Step 4: Toss until everything is evenly coated with the dressing.

Recipe Tips

  1. Remove the core from the cabbage. After you slice the cabbage in half, make sure to cut out the core! This is tough and just not great to eat. I like to use a sharp chef’s knife and use a triangular cut to get the core out.
  2. Make sure to finely shred the cabbage. The finer the cabbage is shredded, the easier and better it is to eat. If you own a mandolin, you can absolutely use it for this recipe!
  3. Let the slaw sit before serving. This slaw needs at least 10 minutes for the cabbage to soften and absorb some of the flavors from the dressing.
