Ingredients & substitutions

  • Ground beef: Use 90% lean ground beef for these burger patties, because we add avocado to them, they don’t need fatty beef to taste great. You can also swap beef for ground turkey or chicken if you prefer.
  • Avocados: Fresh avocado is mixed into the burger mix creating a creamy and rich flavor thanks to all those healthy fats. You can make the burger patties without, but they really work great as an added ingredient.
  • Avocado crema: The avocado crema is made from avocado, Greek yogurt (or sour cream), lime juice, salt and pepper.

Tips for making juicy burgers

  1. Don’t over mix the beef mixture. The ingredients should be combined, but don’t keep mixing it, as this can result in tough and chewy burgers.
  2. Preheat your pan. To get those perfect grill lines, the pan should be hot when you add the burgers. Set it on the heat before you mix together your ingredients so it’s hot when you are ready to cook the patties.
  3. Only flip them once. Don’t keep moving the avocado burgers in the pan. When you add them in, let them sit, untouched for about 4 minutes. When you see some juices forming on the top of the burger, that’s when you flip them.
  4. Don’t press the burger down when cooking. It’s tempting to flatten the burger with a spatula when you are cooking them, but don’t! Pressing the burgers down as they cook will result in the fat escaping, and that’s what makes the burgers tasty and juicy.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make them ahead of time?

You can make the burger mix ahead of time and keep it covered in the fridge. Don’t make them more than a day ahead of time though as the avocado will start to brown.

Can you freeze them?

Yes, you can freeze these burger patties before you cook them. Mix and form the burgers, stack them with parchment paper separating them and place in a freezer bag or container. You can cook them from frozen for a few minutes longer, but for best results, thaw in the fridge overnight before cooking as per the recipe.

What do you serve them with?

These avocado burgers are great served on buns and Dave’s Killer Bread is my favorite! Serve with some fresh lettuce and tomatoes and a dollop of the avocado crema. They are also great in lettuce wraps for a low carb option. You can of course add any other topping you like, cheese, sautéed mushrooms and pickled onions are all great choices.

This was fantastic! Thank you for sharing this delicious recipe, the avocado crema is amazing and makes this burger even better! I have one question, how long will the crema last in the fridge? I had 2 avocados to use so I have leftovers – not upset about it either 😁
