Simple French Toast Recipe

Easy french toast you can make with regular sliced bread, eggs, milk, and cinnamon. A simple weekend breakfast served with maple syrup and berries.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • Butter for greasing pan
  • 4 eggs
  • ¼ cup milk of choice
  • 1 ½ tablespoon dark brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 8 stale bread slices white bread or sliced challah, brioche
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Berries for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat griddle or nonstick skillet on medium heat, and grease lightly with butter.
  • In a large bowl, beat together eggs, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  • Dip the bread slices into the batter, letting them soak well on both sides.
  • Transfer the dredged slices to the lightly greased griddle or pan. Cook for 3 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
  • Serve hot with maple syrup and berries, if desired.

Notes

My Top Tip: Keep the pan at medium heat. If the pan gets too hot, the outside can brown before the egg mixture in the center has a chance to cook.
Storage: French toast tastes best right after you make it. If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet, toaster oven, air fryer, or microwave until warmed through.
Freezing: Let the French toast cool completely, then freeze the slices in a single layer before transferring them to a freezer-safe bag or container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat from frozen or thaw overnight in the fridge first.
