I was really skeptical about the thick batter at first but wow, this is delicious. Most mug cakes I’ve ever made have been super dry or even burnt but this is perfectly moist and so delicious, it tastes like the best chocolate cake.” – Gia

Ingredients you’ll need to make a Nutella Mug cake

  • Nutella: Or your favorite brand of chocolate hazelnut spread. This adds a wonderfully rich flavor to your mug cakes.
  • Eggs: To bind the ingredients together and help the cakes rise when they are cooked.
  • Flour: I use all purpose flour for this recipe. I haven’t tried using a 1:1 gluten-free flour, but pretty sure it will work well. Let me know if you try it!
  • Gluten-Free Variation: I haven’t tried using a 1:1 gluten-free flour, but pretty sure it will work well. Let me know if you try it!
  • Balanced sweetness: If you’re okay with adding another ingredient, a pinch of salt goes a long way in balancing the sweetness of Nutella.
  • Extra Chocolate!: Add in chocolate chips or chunks to the batter for extra chocolate gooeyness throughout the mug cake.

How to make a Nutella mug cake

  • Measure the ingredients in a large bowl (or alternatively, divide in half into two greased mugs.)

Tips for making the best Nutella mug cakes

  1. Don’t over mix the cake batter. The flour should be just combined, similar to a pancake mixture. If you over mix the cake won’t rise when you cook it as the gluten will be too developed.
  2. Use a large mug. The batter will expand to about twice it’s size, so use a mug that will hold that amount.
  3. Use a mug with straight sides so that the cake cooks evenly all the way through.
  4. Place a plate under the mug in the microwave to catch any of the batter if it overflows.

How to store & reheat a Nutella mug cake

This quick and easy mug cake is best enjoyed fresh, however you can store leftovers in the fridge when needed.

How long will nutella mug cakes last in the fridge?

Already cooked mug cakes will last about 1 to 2 days in the fridge. Keep in mind that the texture may change once refrigerated.

Can I freeze a mug cake?

Yes, you can freeze a mug cake. Once the cake is cooled, wrap the mug tightly in plastic wrap and then foil then place it in the freezer. Freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw before reheating.

Reheating a Nutella mug cake: To reheat, simply microwave your mug cake for 15-30 seconds. The exact time may vary depending on your microwave and if your cake was refrigerated or frozen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make them ahead of time?

The beauty of a mug cake is that you can make perfect portions of cake in no time at all! If you do have leftovers, cover the mug with plastic wrap and keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.

What other toppings can you add?

I like to serve these mug cakes with a spoon full of Nutella for a little extra treat. They are great served with some fresh fruit, like raspberries or strawberries or sprinkle over some coconut flakes, chocolate shavings or sprinkles. You also can’t go wrong with a classic frosting on top.

Can you cook mug cakes in the oven?

Yes, you can make these single portion cakes in the oven if you don’t have a microwave, they will just take a little longer. Pour the cake batter into a greased oven safe ramekin and bake in a preheated oven at 350F or 15 to 20 minutes.
