Summary

  • No Mayo Needed: Traditionally, mayonnaise is the heart of ranch dips and dressings. However, using Greek yogurt and sour cream instead of mayo makes for a lighter yet irresistibly creamy texture. It’s a guilt-free alternative that doesn’t compromise on the rich, velvety feel we all love in a good dip.
  • Quick to Whip Up: Simplicity is key here. Just chop the herbs, mix them with all the ingredients in one bowl, and in less than 5 minutes, you’ll have a delicious dip! Perfect for those last-minute gatherings or snack cravings.
  • Herb-Infused Delight: The combination of dried chives, dill, garlic, and onion powders brings a burst of fresh, herby flavor that store-bought ranch dips can’t match.
  • Healthier Choice: Packed with protein and low in carbs, it’s a healthy homemade ranch dip that doesn’t skimp on flavor – each serving is around 50 calories with only 2g of fat. I made this with full-fat Greek yogurt and sour cream as it’s richer in flavor, but you can low fat if you want!

Ingredients you’ll need for this ranch dip

  • Greek Yogurt: Opt for full-fat for a richer texture. This will be the creamy base of your dip.
  • Sour Cream: Just like Greek yogurt, I often choose full-fat sour cream for creaminess. But you can also use low-fat for a lighter dip.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Adds a nice tang. White vinegar or lemon juice can be used as well.
  • Garlic Powder: For a robust garlic flavor. Fresh minced garlic can be used for a more intense taste.
  • Onion Powder: This adds a subtle, savory depth.
  • Dried Chives: These give a mild, onion-like flavor. If you don’t have dried, fresh chives can be used.
  • Dried Dill Weed: Fresh dill is a great substitute if you want a more vibrant herby taste.
  • Salt: A pinch to enhance all the flavors.
  • Black Pepper: Ground, for a bit of spice and warmth.
  • Vegetables for Serving: Choose your favorites like carrots (my go-to!), celery, bell peppers, or cucumber. Make sure they’re clean and cut into dipping sizes.
  • Spice It Up: For those who love a bit of heat, add a dash of cayenne pepper or a sprinkle of paprika to the mix. It’s the perfect dip for chicken wings!
  • Try Using Cream Cheese: While I like my homemade ranch dip more on the thinner side, you can swap out some of the Greek yogurt for cream cheese for a thicker, richer dip. It tastes just as good.
  • Make It Vegan: Use a plant-based yogurt and sour cream alternative to make this recipe vegan-friendly. There are many great options available out there that mimic the texture and taste of regular yogurt and sour cream, such as cashew-based sour cream and coconut yogurt.
  • Switch Up The Herbs: Feel free to experiment with other dried herbs like parsley or basil. Each herb adds its own distinct flavor to the dip!
  • Add Creamy Avocado: If you want a creamier texture and a boost of healthy fats, blend in some ripe avocado. Also, the light green-ish color? Gorgeous!

How to make homemade ranch dip

Ready to create your own Healthy Ranch Dip? It’s just a few simple steps to dip perfection! Seriously, it’s that simple.

  1. Place all the ingredients in a small bowl.
  2.  Use a spoon to combine until it’s well blended, with no watery parts or chunks of seasoning. Once it’s all smooth and combined, you transfer it to a smaller dip bowl or wipe down the sides of the one used for mixing.

Serve this with carrots and cucumbers or even overcooked vegetables as a dreamy sauce (you can thin it out with some water if needed). Low in fat and calories, it is going to become one of your go-to recipes when you are serving dips and snacks.

Tips for making the best homemade ranch

  1. Dry the herbs well and chop finely. I usually like to use one fresh herb, either chives or dill or if I’m in a pinch, even parsley. But whatever you use make sure it’s dry and fine so it blends well.
  2. Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning. I love the balance of tang, herbs and saltiness here, but I still recommend you taste as you mix. And make sure to taste it with a vegetable, not just by dipping your pinky in. 😉
  3. Serving. You can serve this dip straight out of the fridge, but for the best dipping experience, serve it cool, but not too cold. Taking it out of the fridge 10-15 minutes before serving softens the texture so it’s not super thick.

How to store leftover ranch dip

To store your Homemade Ranch Dip, place it in an airtight container or cover it with plastic wrap and keep it in the refrigerator.

How long with ranch dip last in the fridge? This dip has a pretty good shelf life. It will keep well in the fridge for up to 7 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use ranch seasoning instead of individual spices?

If you’re short on time or spices, ranch seasoning is a great alternative. Just keep an eye on the salt content, as premade seasonings can be quite salty. You can also make your own ranch seasoning using this recipe.

What do you serve it with?

You can either serve this as a dip or as a salad dressing. It’s perfect to serve with a crudite platter with lots of fresh chopped veggies and it of course works great with chips and breadsticks if you prefer. It’s perfect drizzled over a chopped salad or even dip your fries in it!

Can I use this dip as a salad dressing?

Yes, you can. You’ll just have to thin it out with a little bit of milk or water until it reaches a pourable consistency. It makes a zesty, flavorful dressing for any salad!

This Healthy Ranch Dip is going to become one of your go-to recipes when you’re serving snacks. The herbs and spices include a good balance of flavors and give the dip an amazingly fresh kick. It’s tasty, creamy, and perfect for all your healthy snacking!
